GAS ANALYSIS OF CONTAMINANTS IN GASIFICATION PRODUCT GAS AND UPGRADING OF PHYLLIS-2 DATABASE Opportunities for collaboration with BRISK-2 project 12 th ECCRIA Conference B.J. Vreugdenhil, J.H.A. Kiel, G. Aranda Almansa, C. Mourao Vilela, L.E. Fryda

CONTENT Introduction Upgrading of Phyllis-2 database Gas analysis Opportunities for collaboration Wrap-up 2 Gas analysis of contaminants in gasification product gas and upgrading of Phyllis-2 database

1. INTRODUCTION Deployment of bio-based economy large-scale, sustainable, competitive production of biofuels and chemicals. Feedstock flexibility: increasingly important factor. Need for support of reliable, high-quality, public data Reinforcement of existing biomass databases. Need for development of accurate, yet inexpensive gas analysis for the design and monitoring of bio-based plants (pre-treatment, conversion, upgrading of intermediate biomass carriers e.g. bio-oil or product gas, and synthesis and purification of products). 3 Gas analysis of contaminants in gasification product gas and upgrading of Phyllis-2 database

2. UPGRADING OF PHYLLIS-2 DATABASE Phyllis-2 database: > 3000 data records on composition of biomass and waste. ECN Phyllis classification: based on plant physiology and practical considerations. BRISK-2: upgrading of Phyllis-2 database: Addition of new datasets: biorefinery streams and marine biomass. Improved functionality: automated upload of input data, download of data. Stronger Phyllis-2 new users and data suppliers promotion of exchange of knowledge and cooperation in biofuel production. 4 Gas analysis of contaminants in gasification product gas and upgrading of Phyllis-2 database

2. UPGRADING OF PHYLLIS-2 DATABASE Creation of template for data upload. After testing, planned distribution to beta users for addition of data into Phyllis-2. Distribution to related H2020 projects participating in OpenAIRE. 5 Gas analysis of contaminants in gasification product gas and upgrading of Phyllis-2 database

3.DESCRIPTION OF TECHNIQUES AND FACTSHEETS Absorption spectroscopy Fluorescence spectroscopy Gas chromatography (AEB, BID, FID, FPD etc) Mass spectroscopy Photo ionization detector Wet chemical analysis SPA (tar measument) In total 47 different techniques described Description of the technique Advantages of the technique Limitations Examples of how and where it is applied Related topics Contact persons working with this technique 9 Gas analysis of contaminants in gasification product gas and upgrading of Phyllis-2 database

3. GAS ANALYSIS WP6 BRISK-2 Target gas compounds: hydrocarbons, alkalis, sulphur, heavy metals etc Round robin campaigns for validation of selected measurement techniques. -Partners provide their setup for gas production where simultaneous measurements are performed Opportunity for testing of equipment of external partners (synergies with Gas Analysis Group and partners from IEA gas analysis report). 10 Gas analysis of contaminants in gasification product gas and upgrading of Phyllis-2 database

4. WRAP-UP BRISK-2: opportunities for collaboration: Data supply to Phyllis-2 database. Participation in gas analysis round robin campaigns within WP6 Transnational Access.
