3 Key Takeaways 2015 Wind Project Installations During the third quarter of 2015, the U.S. wind industry installed 1,602 MW of wind capacity, the second highest level of third quarter activity on record. A total of 848 turbines were installed across 13 projects in 7 different states. The most capacity was installed in Texas (771 MW), followed by Oklahoma (398 MW), Kansas (201 MW) and Illinois (175 MW). For the year, the U.S. wind industry has now installed 1,862 turbines totaling 3,596 megawatts (MW). This total more than doubles the 1,254 MW installed during the first three quarters of There are now 69,471 MW of installed wind capacity in the United States and 49,860 wind turbines. Texas now has over 16,000 MW of installed capacity, Oklahoma has over 4,000 MW and Kansas has over 3,000 MW. Wind Power Construction Activity Wind developers reported more than 13,250 MW of construction activity across 102 projects in 25 states. This includes over 1,250 MW of new construction announcements made during the third quarter. Texas continues to host the majority of under construction activity with over 6,300 MW. There are nearly 1,200 MW under construction in Oklahoma, over 870 MW under construction in Kansas and over 730 MW under construction in North Dakota. Near Term Wind Development Wind developers also reported over 4,100 MW of projects in the advanced stages of development. These projects have not started construction but have either signed a power purchase agreement (PPA), been announced under direct utility ownership, or placed a firm turbine order. Power Purchase Agreements, Corporate Purchasers and Southeast Expansion Corporate purchasers, cities and the Southeast continue to invest in wind power. Nearly 600 MW of PPAs were signed during the third quarter of 2015, bringing total PPA contracts signed since the beginning of 2013 to more than 13,000 MW. Amazon Web Services, Hewlett-Packard and the city of Washington, D.C. all signed PPAs for wind projects in North Carolina, Texas and Pennsylvania, respectively. Once constructed, the 208 MW North Carolina wind project will be the second and by far the largest wind farm to be built in the Southeast. The third quarter also saw the commissioning of two utility-scale wind projects with corporate purchaser investment from Microsoft and Wal- Mart Stores, Inc.
