Air Quality in London Around 9,500 Londoners a year die prematurely from causes related to air pollution. Air pollution contributes to myriad health problems including asthma, heart disease, lung disease, stroke and lung cancer. Increased risk of reduced birth weight. Some estimates say that it costs the NHS bn Pollution related deaths annually Brent 112 Hillingdon 125 Islington 88 Lambeth 109 Redbridge 128 Richmond upon Thames 84 Tower Hamlets 85 1Greater London Authority, Estimation of Health Impacts of Particulate Pollution in London, June CleanairinLondon.org Public health indicators Fraction of mortality attributable to particulate air pollutionhttp:// -

Main Pollutants Nitrogen Dioxide (NO 2 ) Particulate Matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) Black carbon is a component of PM 2.5

Williams (2012) Causes Diesel cars emit 4 x the NO2 of petrol cars, and 22x the PM

1. Measure Air Pollution 2. Plot your data 3. Develop Action Plan and take action! What can my community do? Particulate meters measure fine particles concentration Diffusion tubes measure NO 2 concentrations Lichen observation indicate NO 2 presence Plot your data on a Map using your collected measurements Respond to public consultations Work with Local businesses Work with Health and Wellbeing Boards Work with local authorities Planning

Battersea Society Findings: Several sites exceeded legal limits of pollutant concentration and in some locations appeared higher than modelled data High traffic volumes are likely responsible for the concentrations observed 18

Battersea Society Actions Spread the word Public meeting hosted by Battersea Society Took the issue to other civic societies including local rotary clubs. Contributed by presenting findings at two pan London events and at least 8 local events Liaised with politicians Meetings with policy makers including Jane Ellison (MP Battersea- Minister for public health).
