Waste diversion of 50% was achieved in the year 2000, many product stewardship programs have been implemented, ROCAPS tracking system for the beverage container deposit refund system was created and a close working relationship with Municipalities are all part of it s success. Reaching New Targets, Lunenburg Room There are many challenges and situations across Canada where municipalities are working towards better waste management programs. The City of Hamilton is striving to reach an ambitious 65% diversion by the year Central Newfoundland with a small population and large geographical area is looking to achieve 50% by 2010 and closing 42 existing landfills. Alberta is closing two of its largest landfills by 2010 and is looking at achieving a 500kg per person disposal rate. A GIS capable model is used as a planning tool on how to get the 23 municipalities and one million residents on track. Halifax mandated construction and demolition diversion targets, The Municipality of Chester takes special care in separating wood from disposal with great success.
