Berlin Common Forum on Contaminated land in the European Union MAGPlan management plan to prevent threats from point sources on the good chemical status of groundwater in urban areas Dr.-Ing. Sandra Vasin City of Stuttgart Department for Environmental Protection

OUTLINE 01 WHY MAGPLAN? 02 APPROACH AND TOOLS 03 MANAGEMENT PLAN 04 BRIEF RECAP 2

WHY MAGPLAN? SECTION 3

Mineral springs of Stuttgart are the second largest European reservoir [500 l/s]. 4

Mineral springs have regional importance and discharge the area of 300 km 2. city area project area 26 km 2 protection area, core zone protection area, inner zone protection ti area, periphery mineral springs 5

Despite intensive remediation, mineral springs are still contaminated with CHC. 6

The main goal is to define an integral remediation plan for the project area, focusing on key sources of CHC, relevant for the mineral springs. 7

APPROACH AND TOOLS SECTION 8

The MAGPlan approach comprises an areal integral investigation. 9

The MAGPlan aims to develop a holistic view, by understanding the system and related processes. investigation analysis conceptual model analysis analysis numerical model 10

Google Business Tool is used to visualise numerical results with measured data. 13

Google Business Tool enables discussion about overall project results and is available to each project partner. 14

MANAGEMENT PLAN SECTION 15

The groundwater management plan has to be aproved by water authority and city council. groundwater model dl needs for remediation remedation concept & targets t monitoring concept quantification of contributions of single sites and prognosis of future development which contaminant sources have to be removed to what extent, to efficiently improve mineral water quality? site specific targets and measures in the most efficient way, in line with the legal requirements which wells have to be monitored, in what time intervals, to measure effects of remediation? groundwater management plan MAGPlan 16
