Jordan River Watershed Council STREAM FUNCTION INDEX (SFI) July 15, 2009

OUTLINE Stream Function Index (SFI) purpose, structure, and methodology SFI Data and Reports Recommendations and Opportunities What s s Next? Discussion

SFI Purpose Rapid assessment protocol of stream habitat, hydrology, water quality and social factors that influence both water quality and quality of life Streams are used to indicate overall watershed health Used as the monitoring tool for the Water Quality Stewardship Plan (WaQSP( WaQSP) Used to assess BMP effectiveness Updated on a six-year cycle with the WaQSP

SFI Structure

SFI Data and Reports Data was collected between 2006 and 2008 Final SFI report will be available (online or via SLCo Flood Control Division) Late August (Annual Watershed Symposium) City Reports will be distributed to cities and posted on Water Resources Website ( Late August (Annual Watershed Symposium CD s s of GIS data will also be available: Kathlyn J. Collins (801)

Targets? Many targets were based on stream type (Rosgen Stream Type) Other targets were based on fishery and water quality beneficial use categories

Stream Types in SLCo

SFI Final Scores

Recommendations Many of the SFI/EHI scores could be improved through Stream Restoration and Enhancement Projects. Wind River Watershed Bank Stabilization $46,000 to $222,000 per river mile Channel Rehabilitation $41,000 to $137,000 per river mile Riparian Restoration $4,000 to $8,000 per river mile North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program Rural Streams $ per foot Urban Streams $ per foot Salt Lake County Jordan River prices have varied based on labor and material cost plus the need (or lack thereof) to contract construction work out

WaQSP Cost Estimates

Walden Park Project

WaQSP Implementation Tasks Develop sensitive areas overlay zone ordinance template for use on the west side of unincorporated Salt Lake County and within cities. Expand water quality and quantity data collection. Provide assistance, coordination, facilitation and oversight for water quality improvement grant applications. Implement BMPs for stormwater quality purposes.

DISCUSSION Issues? Concerns? Opportunities? Projects? Comments?
