9 THE TAGUS ESTUARY: AN ENVIRONMENTAL HI-RELEVANT CASE - The largest estuary in Western Europe, with 34 hectares; - Vital part of Lisbon, European Capital; - High environmental interest area and biodiversity; - Natural Reserve of the Tagus estuary: Protected area that is the largest wetland in the country and one of the most important in Europe; - Banks with high population density and a significant number of industries; - Area historically affected by highly polluting industrial activities, mainly located in the southern bank of the estuary and with a high environmental liabilities; - Important area, national and international level, which has been the subject of successive plans for their rehabilitation and management.
