There is n ecnmy in a planet that is uninhabitable. We are entering the Oh shit era f glbal warming. Humanity is sitting n a ticking time bmb. This is an internatinal issue that knws n bundaries. A balanced strategy that tackles demand side energy use, as well as supply side emissins, wuld prvide significant benefits t the entire ecnmy.

Whilst there are sceptics and indeed an incmplete science, the verwhelming bdy f evidence is that human induced climate change is in prgress. The Internatinal Panel n Climate Change, in its 4 th Annual Reprt delivered earlier this year, is unequivcal in its warnings n climate change, as well as its rigins. There are slutins bth n the demand and supply side, f which the built envirnment is a large and integral part. Climate change is redefining hw planning practice is cnducted.

What is it we are trying t achieve? Address bth mitigatin and adaptatin Reductin in energy and water use Natural hazard mitigatin Increase use f renewable energy generatin Mre efficient spatial, transprt, building and landscape design Design inclusive, healthy and safe envirnments Encurage use f sustainable resurces and materials Reduce pllutin and encurage recycling Encurage sustainable whle f life peratin fr the built envirnment
Hw d we get there? There are a number f recurring themes that flw frm leading practice: C-rdinatin and cnsistency in natinal targets and standards Integrated and hlistic appraches Use planning and building cntrls t supprt sustainable design Gvernment leadership and partnerships with industry Educatin, training, research and expert resurces Make better use f technlgy and imprve supply f prducts Prvide incentives and demnstrate benefits Address peratinal as well as cnstructin efficiencies (including whle f life evaluatin) Address demand side as well as supply Mdify ccupant behaviur pricing as well as educatin Change cnsumer expectatins Surces: ICLEI/Oceania 2007, Dllars and Sense (GBC) 2006, Sustainable Building Pathway 2006
Australia, like ther cuntries arund the Wrld, is facing an immense challenge t create sustainable cities fr the future. As ne f the mst urbanised cuntries in the Wrld, with water shrtages, transprt cngestin and high energy demands, Australia must take actin nw t address hw ur cities might develp in the future.
