ECCEI WARM-UP

ECCEI WARM-UP As interns at Futura, each day you will begin by reading the Daily Message from the Project Director, Marcos Cruz. This message will provide important information about your internship tasks. It is your responsibility as interns to meet the expectations of the project director. You should read these messages carefully and take notes. I will show you how to do this in the Futura Workspace. Remember this about Daily Messages: The messages typically make a connection to previous work and provide information on what will be the focus of the day. Each message will inform interns about any deliverables.

ECCEI WARM-UP As your internship coordinator, I can assist you with understanding new words related to engineering and to this project. As interns at a professional company, you have work to do while you are in the office, but you might need to do some things after office hours at home in order to complete your deliverables on time. Remember this about Daily Messages: Use the New Note function in the Workspace to generate a note. Confer with your colleagues and look at the glossary (the last chapter in the Dossier) if you need more support with engineering and project terms in the Daily Messages. Researching and collaborating are important practices for engineers.

You may have noticed the New Note icon in the bottom left corner of your intern Workspace. ECCEI WARM-UP

ECCEI WARM-UP Point out that when they have a message open, interns will select NEW NOTE in the bottom left of the Workspace. This will automatically pin the message open and give them a blank note. Point to the NEW NOTE button at the bottom left-hand side of the projection and the Pin button at the top right-hand side of the message. Direct interns to do this now in their Futura Workspace inboxes.

ECCEI WARM-UP Direct interns to title their note this way so they will be able to identify it easily in the future. "Daily Message Notes."

ECCEI WARM-UP Direct interns to write today's date and the subject of the message (Roof Research) in the text section of the note. Explain that this heading will help them separate the notes they take for this message from ones they will make in the future.

ECCEI WARM-UP This note is where they will document important information from the Daily Messages, especially any deliverables. Ask interns to identify important information from today's Daily Message. Interns will become specialists on a roof type, either solar or white, Roof Modification Details sheet.

ECCEI WARM-UP Explain that for each Daily Message, interns will return to their Daily Message Notes to add new information. In order to edit the same note, they will need to pin the new Daily Message, and then open their Daily Message Notes to edit and add new information.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS You and your partner are going to become Roof Specialists. Take a few moments to decide who will specialize in white roofs and who will specialize in solar roofs. Navigate to Chapter 3: Roof Modification Technical Notes in the Dossier. Remember, it is important to read critically, as an engineer would.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS Think about how the roof modification you are specializing in affects the design criteria. Can your design: reduce climate impact by decreasing carbon dioxide from combustion and increasing albedo, preserve historic value, and keep costs low.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS You should only read the section related to their roof specialty. Navigate to Chapter 3: "Roof Modification Technical Notes" Read and annotate your roof sections individually.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS You should begin by circling either white roof or solar roof. Each intern will fill in only one column at this time. The other column will remain blank for now. Interns should describe their roof modification and how it works, using words or labeled diagrams.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS Solton is a historic town and preserving its history is important to the people who live there. The historic buildings also draw tourists, helping the local economy. This is why it is important to preserve the look of the historic buildings.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS How would adding a white roof to an oldfashioned building change how people see the building when they visit? I read in the text that flat-roof modifications are less visible than solar panels, even on buildings with pitched roofs.

ECCEI 1.2 BECOMING ROOF SPECIALISTS Would adding a white roof change its historic value? Likely no, because it is not as obvious and doesn t permanently change the roof structure. You should write notes like these in the summary table for their roof type.

ECCEI 1.2 SHARING ROOF SPECIALIZATIONS Engineers often work in teams in order to help one another with ideas and to divide the workload, making the completion of the project easier for everyone. Your goal right now is to teach your partner about your roof modification.

What is the overall goal of both white and solar roofs? Reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) added to Earth s atmosphere due to less combustion of fuels used to run air conditioning. ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

As we review the research for white and solar roofs; Note that both solar and white roofs reduce the amount of CO2 added to Earth s atmosphere through combustion, but they do it in different ways. How? White roofs reflect more energy from sunlight than darker roofs. How do solar roofs work? Solar roofs absorb energy from sunlight and convert it to electrical energy. ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS Solar roofs take one form of energy (solar energy) and change it into electrical energy that we can use.

ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS What type of energy usually powers a fan? Electrical energy from a plug, which comes from electric company s power lines. How can you tell that the solar panel is converting energy. The fan stops moving when the energy source is removed. The solar panel is getting energy from the light as a source, but the fan runs on electrical energy, so light energy must be converting into electrical energy.

How is it possible that the two roof modifications can both reduce the amount of CO2 added to Earth s atmosphere through combustion, even though they work so differently? ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS What were your findings from the albedo investigation? Objects can absorb or reflect different amounts of light. What happens to the energy from the sun that is not reflected? It is absorbed, causing increased temperature in whatever absorbs the energy. If needed, add a clarification example: black t-shirts, dark cars, and asphalt all feel warmer than their lighter-colored counterparts because they reflect less and absorb more solar energy. How would the temperature inside a building with a solar panel on top compare to the temperature inside a building with an original dark roof? Since the energy from the sunlight is absorbed by the panels, less energy is absorbed by the roof so the building stays a little cooler than usual. How does the temperature inside a building with a white roof compare to the temperature inside a building with an original dark roof? Since it is reflecting a lot of the energy from the sun, much less energy is absorbed by the roof so the building also stays cooler than usual. How does the temperature inside a building with a white roof compare to the temperature inside a building with a solar roof? Since it is reflecting a lot of the energy from the sun, much less energy is absorbed by the roof so the building stays cooler than buildings with the solar roof.

Why are solar roofs a useful roof modification for Solton? Solar roofs convert the sun s energy into electrical energy. The building will still need to be cooled, but it will not require burning any fuels to get that electricity. With a solar roof, the electrical energy comes from converting energy from the sun. ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

Why are white roofs a useful roof modification for Solton? Less energy is absorbed in a building with a white roof as compared to a building with an original dark roof. Because less energy is absorbed, the white roof building stays cooler. You may still have to cool the building if it gets hot enough, but it will require burning less fuels to get that electricity than a dark-roof building. ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

White and solar roofs have different albedos and different ways they help reduce CO2 released by combustion. Both roof modifications reduce the climate impact in different ways. ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS

Solar roofs convert much more sun energy than one building could use. Solar roofs generate extra electrical energy that can be stored by the city for future use. ECCEI 1.2 DISCUSSING ROOF MODIFICATIONS
