1 PA-TSA ROBOTICS Middle Schl REVISED: Octber 2015 I. OVERVIEW / PURPOSE A. Students will design, build and test a remte cntrlled rbt t carry ut a specific challenge. Teams f Tw (2) minimum t Fur (4) maximum. B. Rbts may be cnstructed using recycled, salvaged and cmmercial parts. There is n specific platfrm r vendr required. Any rbt cntrl system may be used. Cmmercial kits may be used, cmbined, adapted and re-engineered fr the design challenge. Examples include, but are nt limited t: VEX, LEGO, TETRIX, Fisher/Technic, Lynxmtin, HiTech and/r Arduin. C. Size Limit fr Rbt 24" x 24" x 24" Rbt may extend utside f the specified size during cmpetitin. D. The rbt may be cntrlled by ne r tw remte cntrl devices. One r tw peratrs may cntrl the rbt during the cmpetitin. E. Bnus Autnmus Mde - teams may btain bnus pints fr prgramming the rbt t run a demnstratin in autnmus mde. F. Teams are required t submit an Engineering Jurnal in.pdf frmat n a CD r DVD fr evaluatin. G. Judges will use cntest rubrics t determine results. Design Challenge Hazardus Waste Dispsal Dispsal is the prcess by which hazardus waste is dispsed. Hazardus waste cntainers have been left in an abandned building. The rbt must enter the building t retrieve the hazardus waste cntainers. The hazardus waste cntainers must then be taken t a safe zne fr dispsal. The cmpetitin will be run n a 4' x 4' demnstratin field created with a.25" black smth fam cre and.75" stck lumber. The perimeter will be 4" in height with a 28" dr pening. There will be a 28" x 28" piece f fam cre referred t as the base simulating the hallway where the rbt must start and cmplete the task. The base will be cnnected t the demnstratin field using 2" grey duct tape that will simulate the threshld. A standard 5-galln plastic bucket/pail with a 11.5" diameter and 14.5" height will be used as the waste dispsal cntainer. The waste dispsal cntainer will be placed centered t the dr pening 28" away frm the center f the threshld in the simulated hallway. The hazardus waste cntainers will be 3" x 3" x 3". 51

2 II. ELIGIBILITY Three (3) teams per chapter Team f Tw (2) minimum t Fur (4) maximum III. TIME LIMITS A. Entries must be started and cmpleted during the current schl year. B. Each team selects a demnstratin time during check-in. Teams shuld try t avid cnflicts with ther events when selecting their demnstratin time. C. Each team is allwed three (3) minutes f preparatin time. D. Each team has three (3) minutes t demnstrate its slutin t the prblem. E. Each team may run an Autnmus Mde Demnstratin fr Bnus Pints. IV. ATTIRE Casual dress as described in Cmpetitive Events Attire is the minimum requirement. V. PROCEDURE A. Only registered team members are permitted t check in, prepare and demnstrate the entry. B. REGIONAL CONFERENCE Design Challenge will be determined by the state cnference crdinatr and specificatins will be prvided t cntestants at least tw mnths prir t the Reginal Cnference. C. STATE CONFERENCE Design Challenge will be determined by the state cnference crdinatr and specificatins will be the same fr Reginal and State Cmpetitins. D. All rbts, cntrllers, batteries and engineering jurnals n CD r DVD will be cllected at a time and place indicated in the cnference prgram. E. When the demnstratin begins, the testing area is accessible nly t judges and the team currently cmpeting. All ther cntestants must be utside the 10' x 10' perimeter testing area. A spectatr area will be set up fr viewing. F. Preparatin time (maximum f 3 minutes) is used t install batteries and perfrm a system check, NOT fr practice r mdificatins. G. Each team is allwed three (3) minutes t demnstrate the rbt. The clck starts at the judge s signal. H. Each Team is given ne (1) pprtunity t demnstrate the rbt. Time will be recrded t determine the time scre. Teams whse rbt fails t begin at the signal may be given a secnd chance t start again at the discretin f the event crdinatr. I. Each team may run an Autnmus Mde Demnstratin fr Bnus Pints. VI. REGULATIONS A. Curse Specificatins fr the Curse/Challenge fr each year will be made 52

EVALUATION PA - Rbtics - Engineering Jurnal Evaluatin Check the PA-TSA website fr the current PA-Rbtics Engineering Jurnal scring rubric. Must be submitted n CD r DVD in.pdf frmat clearly labeled with team ID Engineering Jurnal MUST include: Plan f Wrk may use wrksheet r custm designed dcument: Date, Task, Time Invlved, Team Member Respnsible, Cmments Phtgraphs - 3 minimum - Designing, Cnstructing and Testing Rbt Descriptin 500 wrds r less explaining: Inspiratin fr Design, Materials, Batteries and Remte Cntrl System Design Drawings may include sketches, CAD, Mind Maps and Brainstrming PA - Rbtics - Rbt Evaluatin Check the PA-TSA website fr the current scring rubric.
