2 OPS Green Transformation Strategy The OPS Green Transformation Strategy has three interconnected goals: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 19% below 2006 baseline by 2014 and by 27% by 2020 (92 KT) without carbon offsets Reduce per capita printing by 2012 by 50% Divert 100% of OPS electronic waste (ewaste) managed by MGS Ontario Shared Services (OSS) 2

4 Accomplishments Energy Conservation Green Print Strategy Device removal estimated 4.5 million kilowatt hours annually in electricity savings PC Power Down An enterprise Power Management Strategy implemented for desktop computers and monitors electricity savings of approx. 19 million kilowatt hours per year Server Virtualization & Data Centres 1,743 servers virtualized to date a savings of approx. 25 million kilowatt hours per year Guelph Data Centre certified LEED Gold Approx. 50 million kilowatt hours saved = Enough energy to power 4,372 houses 4

5 Accomplishments Smart Travel Green the OPS Fleet Increased the number of hybrids in the OPS fleet to 1,062 Pilot deployment of 18 electric vehicles in the OPS fleet 2 100% electric ATVs piloted in Pinery Provincial Park Anti Idling Technology Ministry of Transportation is rolling out antiidling technology in 83 fleet vehicles Fuel savings of over 1 million litres per year OPS Fleet Vehicle Pool OPS Fleet Vehicle Pool (led by MTO) for employee business travel established in 15 locations across Ontario 85% average usage rate 82% of Queen s Park Vehicle Pool are hybrids 5

7 Accomplishments Electronic Business Transformation PAPER INTENSIVE Training & Communications Ontario Police College e materials saves 450,000 sheets/year Cabinet Office Scanning and e Newsroom saves 120,000 sheets/year Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Electronic Bulletin Board saves 1,000,000 sheets/year HR Management & Meetings Talent Management/ Performance Management online Electronic Workflow and Tracking Tool & Enviroscan Executive e Meetings in one ministry saves 20,000 sheets/year E BUSINESS Process Change & Demand Management Leveraging advanced highspeed imaging technology to provide electronic documents Electronic Grants Management Initiative in development Mobile devices for drinking water field inspectors saves 100,000 pages/year 5.4 million sheets of paper saved annually 7

8 Accomplishments Regional Green Leadership Propane Recycling Machine (MNR) The Provincial Logistics Centre in Thunder Bay is utilizing an innovative machine to recycle propane bottles used by FireRangers. The residual propane left in the bottles powers the machine allowing the bottles to be recycled Solar panels and wind turbines installed in 6 northern remote airports to replace diesel fuel Summer Beaver Airport 16 solar panels & 1 wind turbine Peawanuck Airport 36 solar panels & 2 wind turbines power the entire airport Niagara Detention Centre (MCSCS) The Niagara Detention Centre s Zero Waste Recycling Program increased its waste diversion from 43% to 85% in 2007, generating $80K in savings. The centre diverted 100% of its waste in

10 Moving Forward Targeted Reductions to the OPS Environmental Footprint Continue to reduce consumption and manage demand facilities, fleet and flight to meet our 2014 and 2020 GHG reduction target Divert more waste from landfill through reducing waste, composting, etc. Environmental Sustainability through Greener Business Practices Continue to implement e business transformation to further reduce paper use and promote efficiencies Continue to drive smart travel alternatives (e.g. virtual meetings and vehicle pools) A Green Organizational Culture Continue to engage employees across the OPS to build awareness and change behaviours at all levels of the organization Continue to be recognized as one of Canada s Greenest Employers 10
