Here are some low-cost projects you can implement to save at your store: Upgrade your lighting system Improve your refrigerated cases Choose high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) It s also a good idea to inquire with your local natural gas utility about available incentives.

3 Lighten up your savings Consider adding occupancy sensors in storage rooms and office spaces that you use infrequently to save without even thinking about it. And, look outside when considering lighting upgrades. Improvements to exterior lighting on gas station canopies and marquee signs can create a big reduction in your energy costs, some studies show by up to 80 percent. 2 Lighting upgrades usually pay for themselves in little over a year when considering energy cost savings and incentives, as demonstrated in the example project below. In addition to saving, improved interior lighting also can enhance product displays to increase sales. When was the last time you looked at the lighting in those cases? By upgrading to LED case lighting, you could reduce refrigerated lighting costs by up to 50 percent and reduce compressor runtimes due to less heat generated by the lights in your cases. 3 Other ways to keep your energy

4 costs on ice while showing off your refrigerated products include adding anti-sweat heater controls and occupancy sensors to your refrigerated cases. For walk-in refrigerated spaces, consider upgrading to adaptive refrigeration controls to manage evaporator fans and defrost. Heat up your HVAC savings Heating and cooling is a big contributor to your monthly energy costs, representing approximately 43 percent of typical energy use in a grocery store. 4 With a properly sized and installed high-efficiency HVAC system, you can realize greater comfort in your energy bills and your facility.
