3 Food waste refers to food discarded along the food chain that is intended for human consumption. BACKGROUND SUMMARY Food waste has local, national and global impacts on the economy, society and the environment. Waste reduction may be intentional or unintentional. 50% of food produced globally is wasted.

4 THE LIFE CYCLE OF FOOD WASTE... HARVEST COMMERCIAL CONSUMER Food waste can be from choosing food items to suit the aesthetic criteria of supermarkets or loss because they are spoilt from disease, crop abandonment and extreme weather. Spoilage of food due to damage during transportation, poor handling or past use by date. Retail- not all ingredients are used and not all food served is consumed. Household- buying too much and making too much food.

6 PROGRAM GOAL To lower the prevalence of food waste by 10% in the ACT by 2025.

7 PROGRAM OBJECTIVES To reduce the proportion of food wasted among ACT households by 15% by To increase household knowledge within the ACT of household food waste. 8 PROGRAM STRATEGIES Monthly community workshops to educate ACT community Create and app and website with tips and access to other links Fortnightly education classes on how to best store and utilise perishable items. Fortnightly cooking classes on how to re-use leftover food Utilise social media (Facebook and Instagram) to provide more tips and a communication platform to the wider ACT community Formulate advocacy campaigns regarding the issue of food waste and working alongside Ms Gai Brodtmann MP of Canberra.

9 THEORIES OF HUMAN BEHAVIOUR THEORY OF REASONED ACTION Education programs designed to provide information on the extent of food waste in their local community as well as on a global scale. COGNITIVE DISSONANCE THEORY Provides links to bodies to provide statistics regarding the amount of food wasted and its impacts at the global scale. Provide information regarding the environmental and financial severity of food waste at the national and local level. Development of an app. HEALTH BELIEF MODEL To build individual s self-efficacy = community workshops and resources.

11 PROCESS EVALUATION Assess the strategies that have been formulated to achieve the program s objectives Questions relate to the reach, participation, delivery, and satisfaction of the strategies

12 IMPACT EVALUATION Allows for the identification of any impacts brought about by the program. Pilot Program: - 6-month randomised experimental pilot program - 7 ACT districts: Randomly select two districts for experimental group + two districts for control group - Minimise selection bias = 50% of chosen population from families with children and young adults Methods: - Attendance at 3 months and 6 months - Count resources distributed - Survey test group and control group at the start and end of the program - Focus groups

13 OUTCOME EVALUATION All-encompassing analysis of long term intervention performance. Measures whether the goal of the project has been attained. Measuring outcome evaluation: Conducting a waste bin audit and comparing to the results from previous waste bin audits in the ACT, 1 year after the intervention has been completed and then again in 2025.

18 SUMMARY Food waste is an important issue that affects not only us as human beings but also the environment and so it is important for everyone to work together whether it be through community involvement or policy implementation to promote a cleaner, secure future.
