Site and plant Characterization Surface and Depth profiling of contamination Support in selecting the right method and tool to minimize work time and waste volumes + supply of solution Surface mapping Handheld equipment for dose rate measurement Gamma imaging Spectroscopic measurements Defining criteria of choice (radionuclides, accessibility, area size, activity ) Depth profiling Invasive solutions Non -invasive solutions On core samples ISOCS measurement of depth tagged samples with TruPro vacuum drilling Detectors inserted inside drilled holes ISOCS measurements In-situ measurement using spectral shape information p8

Site and plant Characterization Surface and Depth profiling of contamination Application to concrete walls and floors Outside Wall in-situ measurement, using spectrum shape data External measurements at various locations Can use simpler nuclide(s) or with single energy line nuclides; Method utilizes increased compton down-scatter for activity at deeper locations Calibration based on peak-to-compton ratio as a function of depth. Specific algorithms implemented p9

Site and plant Characterization Surface and Depth profiling of contamination Application to 3D mapping of contaminated soils Surface mapping of the activity of the area (handheld equipment, detectors on a carrier ) Geostatistical treatment * Determination of the number and position of the drillings. The size of the mesh is also a conditioned by the precision required by the customer Thin-wall hollow tubes are pushed in the soil. A collimated LaBr or a sealed HPGe probe is inserted in these empty tubes. 3D mapping performed by a software of geostatistic data treatment *Specific algorithms have been developed by the companies specialized in geostatistics with whom we are working, and successfully implemented on real projects p10

Site and plant Characterization Underwater measurements Underwater concrete characterization Our in-situ measurement method using spectrum shape data has been adapted for underwater measurements. Available on an ROV for automatic measurements in ponds Waste, fuel debris characterization in ponds o ISOCS measurements: Example of application for separating fuel debris in spent fuel pool from activation and contaminated debris o SMOPY: Coupling of a neutron measurement with a γ spectrometry at ambient temperature (CZT) Spectroscopic measurements in ponds, seas and rivers SMOPY For application not needing high energy resolution HPGe. Low and Medium energy resolutions p11

Site and plant Characterization Systems, Structures and components characterization (1/2) Canberra acquired a unique worldwide experience in systems, structures and components characterization: In-situ gamma spectroscopic nuclide identification and activity measurements with different types of probes, modeling We bring constant improvement to our in-situ spectroscopic equipment, We develop measurement methods and write corresponding procedures (Standard procedures exist that meet national standards, site-specific or NQA-1 compliant in US) Calibrations developed and validated for previous campaigns (more than 100,000 items assayed) We perform the on-site measurements or we train the teams that can do the measurements following our procedures Our experts analyze the measurement results, We perform on-site measurements with evolutions of the ISOCS equipment that are not yet available on the market p12

Site and plant Characterization Systems, Structures and components characterization (2/2) A few examples Ventilation ducts measurements in Marcoule (CEA France) Free release of heat exchangers at Seabrook NPP (USA) Measurement service at SG replacement outage at Tihange3 NPP (Belgium) p13

Accuracy improvement Operations Support Improving waste assay accuracy (1/2) Accuracy improvement for container measurements where risk of hotspot(s) Improved waste segregation e.g. TRU (PCM) / LLW Detection of hotspots in bulk waste (builders bags / big boxes) Improved uncertainty evaluation if unknown internal fill-height (when RTR image not available) Benefits Improve efficiency of segregation of waste Reduce proportion of waste pessimistically sentenced to higher category Optimize storage of containers in facilities Reduce waste storage costs Reduce waste disposal costs p15

Operations Support Improving waste assay accuracy (1/2) Challenge: Many of the characteristics of items encountered in the field are defined with a certain level of certainty (Matrix composition, density and fill height, weight fraction of U in matrix, container dimensions ) These variables can lead to very high uncertainties and conservative approaches ISOCS Uncertainty Estimator (IUE) software tool already allows to reduce measurement uncertainties Advanced ISOCS Uncertainty Estimator (A-IUE) takes it one step further. Robust analysis with improved accuracy based on all measurement data available Automated determination of efficiency calibration most consistent with gamma ray spectrum or spectra measured in the field. A-IUE developed by Canberra in close collaboration with the IAEA A comparative measurement campaign for TRU / LLW segregation in soft waste packages showed that not using A-IUE (calibration with worst case) can lead to an over-estimation by almost a factor 2. p16
