Transport and Climate Research: Future prospects Fridtjof Unander, Executive Director Division for Energy, Resources and the Environment

The big picture Klimaforliket «Mobilizing the energy research» «The agreement on climate policy has given knowledge and business opportunities»

In short, The agreement on climate policy managed: to set the direction of the Norwegian research to improve the quality of Norwegian research to mobilize resources for the development of knowledge and solutions to recruit a new generation of Norwegian energy specialists to show the importance of the Norwegian contribution to the global efforts to show the opportunities this has given Norwegian contributors It is also one of the reasons we have such excellent research projects like TEMPO 250,0 Developments of PhDs in energy 200,0 150,0 100,0 50,0 0, CLIMIT RENERGI FME teknologi FME Samfunn

The industry was mobilized. Why? Could clearly see the opportunities in the field Public and private spending (MNOK) through RENERGI/ENERGIX/FME ,0 Had already formed structures through the work with Energi21 117,0 347,0 Parliament: 52,5 Clear framework, expectations and direction 176,5 ambitious goals 109,6 230% 361, Næring ENERGIX/RENERGI CLIMIT FME

Where are we now: Transport Transport special emphasis in the agreement on climate policy Hydrogen, electric and biofuel all 3 paths are explored Batteries now also used in naval applications Increased competence - essential to design efficient future measures

Where are we now: Policy & socioeconomy Significantly strengthened efforts Increased knowledge of framework, policies and instruments Relevance for key players important Social science related research in RENERGI/ENERGIX and FME RENERGI/ENERGIX 26,9 FME 17,5 243 % 33,

What has TEMPO meant to us? A good example of a solid project that came into being as a result of the FME-process Exemplary in the sense that it is a projects within the social sciences with a large number of relevant user partners Ensures that the research is relevant Helps to shorten the distance from the results to users creates new value Provides the researcher with access to input We believe this has contributed to the good (and many) results from the TEMPO project TEMPO has been a visible project - important in an area where the dissemination of results to many stakeholders is crucial

RCN-survey: The way forward 3 main messages 1. The transport field is broad sectors industries subjects and disciplines 2. Disparity between challenges and amount of research 3. Long-term perspective for re-newed strategies from R&D institutions businesses Government agencies

Four suggested measures 1. New large national research program Pilot and demonstration 3. Encourage more research and innovation in the transport agencies (and the industry) 4. Implement a strategy process - "Transport 21"

New transport program - Contribute to: Knowledge and innovations More sustainable transport Develop a competitive Norwegian industry Reliable, secure and universal transport Covering travel and freight and all modes

The ENERGIX programme - relevance for transport Transport - System implications Energy policy, society and economics Renewable energy Hydropower Wind and marine energy Solar energy Bioenergy The energy system Integration Balancing services and storage Smart grid and Energy in components transport Energy use and conversion Buildings Industry Hydrogen Biofuels Batteries New energy concepts

Smart Cities Smart Transportation
