KATHMANDU UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Proposal on Improvement And Simplification Of Drinking Water System In Khanichhap VDC Of Palpa Submitted To Turbine Testing Lab (Department Of Mechanical Engineering) Supervisor Mr Biraj Singh Thapa TTL ( DOME) Submitted By Ashok Bista (ME 3 rd year) Dadi Ram Dahal (ME 3 rd year) Sanjaya Dhoju Shrestha(Civil 3 rd year) Milan Paudel(ME 3 rd year) Samir Tandukar(ME 3 rd year) 29 th April 2013

Abstract This proposal is for improvement and simplification of drinking water system in khanichhap vdc of palpa. Water is one of the basic human necessities but a large proportion of the Nepalese population is devoid of access to safe and adequate drinking water. Drinking water system in KHANICHHAP VDC, Palpa is a serious problem. There is only one well available for the whole village of about 96 households. The main objective of this project is to improve the drinking water facility in KHANICHHAP VDC, Palpa and to provide public awareness regarding the purification and safe drinking water to the local people. We will first visit the site and then the purchase the material required for the project. Then we will go through the installation of pump and storage system along with water purification. This project will solve the problem of drinking water in the village. It will save the time of the villagers and will be helpful for uplifting the life standard of the locals. ii

1. Introduction Water is one of the basic human necessities but a large proportion of the Nepalese population is devoid of access to safe and adequate drinking water. According to the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage in Nepal, even though an estimated 80% of the total population has access to drinking water, it is not safe. Those belonging to poor and excluded groups in rural areas have limited to no access. Many in remote areas have to rely on small brooks running from the mountains and spend hours traveling to get water. Still the drinking water available is not always safe as supplied water is often polluted. Among the villages of lacking the drinking water supply and adequate resources, khanichhap VDC of Palpa is mostly suffering from this problem. 2. Objectives To improve the drinking water facility in KHANICHHAP VDC, Palpa. To provide public awareness regarding the purification and safe drinking water to the local people. To manage drinking water from the source to the tap To provide better information on the suitability of drinking water sources 3. Problem Identification Drinking water system in KHANICHHAP VDC, Palpa is a serious problem. There is only one well available for the whole village of about 96 households. The local people have to wait for 3 to 4 hours to fetch the water from the well. Not only for drinking, water is not available for other household purpose. The well is not well protected so cattle s sometimes also use the same well thus contamination of water is high. 4. Methodology Field visit Feasibility study conservation of water resources Installation of water pumping system and the storage system Purification of water 1 P a g e

4.1 Field visit To make this project successful, first we have to get detail information about the location. For this reason we have planned to visit the selected location to know about real problem exist and the possible alternatives to solve the problem. 4.2 Feasibility study Field visit and information about the location may help to sort out some alternatives. These alternatives should be analyzed in detail so that we can have an idea about the feasibility and best possible alternatives can be selected. Feasibility study can be done considering the limited budget, resources and expertise. 4.3 Conservation of Water Resources In Khanichap village there are some water resources but they are not well conserved. Main problem occur during rainy season, water become turbid due to the lack of well protection to the source and villagers have to wait until the water become clear to use this water. Another problem faced by the people of Khanichhap is that cattle s have direct excess to these water resources which further help water to get turbid. So a conversation plan is really needed. To solve above mentioned problem we are planning to make a roof to cover the water source from rain and fencing the water source so the castle don t have direct excess to the water. This will reduce the chance of the water getting turbid and thus reduce the time because the villagers don t have to wait much. 4.4 Installation of Water Pumping System and the Storage System According to the information we have, there exist some other small water resources. We can pump the water from these resources and store this water. The stored water can be distributed to the villagers using taps. This will provide faster and easier method to the villagers because they won t have to wait for longer time and they will have easy excess to the water. 4.5 Purification of Water Quality of water or purification of water is directly related to the health of the villagers. Thus to provide villagers with purified water we are planning to install water purification system called bucket filtration process in which series of buckets with charcoal, sand, and gravel are used. It s a traditional and economical process that may suit in the village. Furthermore we are planning to run some awareness program in the village to teach them the various methods for purification of water. 2 P a g e

5. Project layout This project is divided into two stages: 1. Primary stage 2. Secondary stage 5.1 Primary stage: This stage basically deals with the selections of water sources around the village and sorts these sources so that we can collect water from these source and store near the village. For this purpose we will be using 2 or 3 pumps according to the need whether we need multistage pumping (series or parallel) or single stage pumping. Reservoir Source 1 Source 3 Source Secondary Stages: In this stage purification of storage water will be carried out. For this we will use buckets containing sand, gravels, charcoal in series and water is passed through each bucket so that water will be purified to some extent. After that water will be further purified using alternative method like water guard, sodis and piyush. A simplified layout using a pump is shown below: 3 P a g e
