4 The Cotswolds Conservation Board The Cotswolds Conservation Board was established by Parliament in The Board has two statutory purposes: - To conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the AONB - To increase the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the AONB In fulfilling these roles, the Board also has a duty to seek to foster the economic and social well-being of people living in the AONB.

5 As the largest designated protected landscape in southern England, the Cotswolds AONB is playing an active part in the national response to climate change through appropriate mitigation and adaptation measures to reduce the threat and potential impact on the natural beauty of the area.

9 Recent Changes in Our Climate Between 1961 and Average summer temp C overall getting warmer with Summer precipitation 8.8% increased soil moisture issues Winter precipitation % and extreme weather events Sea Level in the South West has risen + 20 cm since out of the past 10 years have brought serious flooding to the UK 10 hottest years globally on record have all occurred since 1997 Source: Climate UK 2011

10 CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ON FARMING Greenhouse gas emissions reported within agriculture: Carbon Dioxide (C02) grid energy, fertilisers, machinery and equipment *Methane (CH4) largely from livestock - (enteric fermentation and stored manures) *Nitrous Oxide (N20) largely from soil management, and the use of fertilisers and manures Global Warming Potential (*GWP) *GWP CH4 = x 21 of C02, and N2O = x 310 of C02

12 CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ON FARMING Climate Change Act 2008 UK Government required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% of 1990 levels, by 2050 Action = Agriculture sector has already committed to an 11% GHG reduction on 2008 levels by within the next 7 years. This % target increases yet further to 2050 Farming is one of the sectors of the economy most vulnerable to the weather and the effects of climate change Environment Agency

13 CLIMATE CHANGE FARMING Potential Impacts on farming in the Cotswolds: - More frequent and extreme weather events, & increased periods of drought/flooding - Soil erosion and depletion of organic matter - Reduction in crop yields - soil structure, nutrients and soil moisture balance - Excessive temperatures - heat stress for livestock - Increased new types of pests and disease - Increased business costs (farm inputs and energy)

16 Farming & forestry accounts for 96% of the Cotswolds AONB land area, and these businesses manage much of our valued landscape, habitat, and natural resources Most businesses and communities within the Cotswolds are aware of rising energy & input costs, and are keen to receive advice and guidance on energy efficiency, resource management, and renewable energy which is considered appropriate in the landscape Ofgem CEO warns bills will continue to rise (February 2013 press release)

19 Climate Change Advice Awareness raising of climate change issues and opportunities within the AONB through information gathering and distribution of guidance, advice & support, and attendance at events Pro-active business engagement and project development support with over 80 land - based businesses and a growing number of community organisations in the AONB

20 PROCESS STAGE 1 Climate Change Advice Identify farming, forestry, and other small business/ community support engagement opportunities Raise awareness of the Cotswolds AONB - management plan and climate change strategic objectives, position statements,& opportunities Undertake initial appraisal of energy efficiency, renewable energy, resource management and related adaptation options, and seek to complete a carbon audit

21 PROCESS - STAGE 2 Climate Change Advice Project scoping & completion of business case in accordance with Board objectives and policies Contractor procurement advice & risk appraisal to achieve best value On-going critical friend project management support Assistance with feed-in-tariff, renewable heat, green deal incentives, and other funding streams Monitoring and Evaluation

23 COST SAVING ACTIONS Carbon Accounting Identify GHG emissions and benchmark against similar farm enterprises, in order to generate early cost savings for the business, e.g. through improved use of inputs, energy efficiency and renewable energy measures. A 20% cut in energy costs can represent the same bottom line benefit as a 5% increase in sales. Energy Saving Actions Regular maintenance, and replacement/ upgrading of agricultural buildings and equipment, including improved: insulation/ ventilation, low energy task lighting and movement/ time control switches, refrigeration, smart meters, voltage optimisers, variable speed pumps, and heat exchangers etc..

24 COST SAVING ACTIONS EXAMPLE -VARIABLE SPEED MOTORS PUMPS & HEAT EXCHANGERS Variable speed motors and vacuum pumps are designed to meet the capacity required when needed, and can deliver various system type energy savings of up to 60% Heat exchangers also have various transfer applications including: For example - to pre-cool milk prior to entry to the bulk tank which can reduce energy consumption within a dairy unit again by up to 60% Reducing energy consumption, CO2 emissions and your electricity bill!

25 COST SAVING ACTIONS EXAMPLE VOLTAGE OPTIMISATION This is an increasingly popular energy-saving technique of reducing the electricity voltage supplied to a site. Voltage optimisation works by reducing losses in electrical equipment - reducing energy consumption, Co2 emissions and electricity bills, with savings of up to 15% being realised This can be achieved via a voltage reduction transformer, or a voltage regulator/ stabiliser) - Payback is typically achieved within 18 months.

26 COST SAVING ACTIONS EXAMPLE - REFRIGERATION The proportion of electricity used by commercial and retail refrigeration equipment is significant. Around 30% of the electricity consumption in pubs/clubs Around 70% of the electricity consumption in shops Around 90% of the electricity consumption in cold stores There is often a large variation in the energy consumption of refrigeration equipment, and other electric motors and pumps. For example: within all of the energy technology list categories, the most energy efficient products listed typically use half the electricity of the least efficient!
