Khalil Hasan Page 3 of 9 aekhalil@umd.edu Graduate Research Assistant Combustion Laboratory, University of Maryland, College Park, MD Research: Colorless Distributed Combustion for Gas Turbines Engaged in brainstorming sessions to define the potential geometries and configurations for zero emission gas turbine combustors Developed the concept of Swirling Colorless Distributed Combustion (SCDC) for near zero pollutants emissions Performed CFD simulations, analysis, and modeling for gas turbine combustors Designed novel high intensity low emission gas turbine combustors for fuel-flex operation Designed the experimental setup for the SCDC bench scale model Fabricated bench scale model for the SCDC combustor for experimental investigations Assessed experimentally the performance of various combustor designs Demonstrated experimentally the unique performance of the novel combustor design for ultralow emissions coupled with fuel flexibility and high energy release intensity with 30-50% reduction of pollutants emission as compared to current gas turbine engines pollutants emission Evaluated the performance of different biofuels for renewable energy conversion with focus on zero emissions and environmentally clean performance Analyzed the effect of multi-injection on pollutants emission and behavior, leading to a 10% reduction in NO x emission as compared to single injection Characterized the SCDC combustor behavior using advanced laser diagnostics under isothermal conditions using particle image velocimetry (PIV) Identified reaction behavior using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) to identify the extent of hydroxyl distribution in the combustor Developed a Distribution Index that includes the impact of different operational conditions and design parameters on reaction distribution and ultra-low emissions Participated in proposal writing for current and future development of Colorless Distribution Combustion Mentorship Participated in the Future Faculty Program, a four semesters program aimed at preparing participants for faculty duties in research and teaching Supervised a team of undergraduate (6) and high school interns (2) participating in the development of SCDC combustor Mentored new graduate students and provided support with regard to time management, research ethics, and paper writing Teaching Participated in teaching a senior level course as a teaching practicum in partial fulfillment of the Future Faculty Program (ENME 489X: Energy Conversion systems for Sustainability, fall 2012 and fall 2013) Developed the course syllabus and educational materials as this was the first time the course was offered Researched available literature for energy cycle in the US including energy sources and consumption in residential, commercial, industrial sectors as well as transportation with focus on sustainable energy sources and energy efficiency Applied active teaching skills and promoted students discussion and participation Actively participated in students evaluation and grading
