What s the Problem? 303d List (EPA designation) Agricultural Sediment/Siltation Aquatic habitat impaired What Does It Look Like? Poor bank vegetation Poor riffle habitat Embedded substrate Who Identified the Problem? DEP Biologists through their Unassessed Water Program

Who Decided to Do Something About the Problem(s)

Project Goals: Decrease Erosion Stabilize stream banks Increase filtration of run-off Improve/create aquatic habitats Support fish and aquatic life Stabilize the riparian buffer Increase filtration of run-off Stream bank fencing Riparian buffer plantings Increase awareness of habitat structures Build local capacity Above: Interns and staff from Northumberland County Conservation District work to get logs in place on Little Shamokin Creek. Left: Here s the same site 6 months post construction. The pole and trees provide landmarks to help orientate you between the photos.

Priority habitats of the work: 2007 Growing Greener and State Wildlife Grant Any Stream 2010, 2011, & 2012 Growing Greener Grants Agricultural Sediment Impaired Streams Type of activity: Instream work has been PFBC s Stream Habitat Division s typical structures multi-log vanes, mudsills, toe logs, etc. And. Eligible Agricultural BMPs through this grant: Streambank fencing Riparian buffer planting Animal crossings and associated walkways Satteson, on Turtle Creek, Union County is a great example of how various programs can partner. Here the excavator is preparing a trench for a multi-log vane

The watersheds where grant funds can be spent

Growing Greener Grant Awards: 2007 Growing Greener 1 - $250, Growing Greener 2 - $165, Growing Greener 3 - $366, Growing Greener 4 - $165,630

Site Selection: What other investments are in the area? How far up the stream are we? What have the neighbors done, or are willing to do?

Site Selection continued.. To give you an idea of our cooperation and communication, at this pre-construction visit along Little Shamokin Creek we had: *PFBC *DEP Grant advisor *DEP permitting *Conservation District *Watershed Association *Landowners 2 of the 3 involved *Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy

The Team is bigger than it looks

Everyone has a role, some people have several Landowner relations, design visits, permits, volunteer recruitment, ordering materials, stockpile materials, public education, volunteer recruitment, construction coordination..

Build local capacity
