MEETING ENERGY NEEDS WITH CLEAN AND RENEWABLE POWER Christian G. Brosseau President HQ Energy Services US November 2010
A Snapshot of Hydro-Québec Hydro-Québec is the largest power generator in North America (42,000 MW, idem Southern Company) Hydro-Québec is among the largest power transmission companies in North America > $16 B in transmission assets > Over $ 5.0 B investment over the next 4 years Hydro-Québec is the largest electricity company in Canada
Corporate Structure
Hydro-Québec Production Generation assets: $31.7 B 98% renewable energy 60 hydroelectric generating stations (41,000 MW) 26 reservoirs (capacity of 175 TWh) 1 nuclear power plant Annual investment : $2 B
Electricity Sales Outside Québec Canada and the United States
Our Game Plan for the Coming Years Expanding our generation assets Building transmission to move energy to markets
Hydropower Projects Under Construction
Hydropower Projects Eastmain-1-A Powerhouse
Hydropower Projects Under Construction
Hydropower Projects Project Portfolio
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Greenhouse gas emissions from the different generating options Hydroelectric run-of-river Nuclear Wind Hydroelectric with reservoir Photovoltaic solar Thermal: natural gas Thermal: coal (g CO 2 eq/kwh) Large-scale scientific study on net GHG emissions at the Eastmain-1 hydroelectric reservoir completed recently > 80 experts, 2 Canadian universities and one private firm > More than 120,000 measurements over 7-year period > Prior to flooding, the natural ecosystems overall were a low net source of GHG > Net GHG emissions are substantial in the first years after flooding and decrease rapidly, stabilizing to level of a natural lake after about 5 years > Boreal hydroelectric reservoirs are low GHG emitters Hydropower ranks as one of the lowestemission generating options per kilowatthour produced. Methane emissions are not an issue for hydro in Québec thanks to its cold, well-oxygenated waters
Export Market Vermont Contract signed in August 2010: > 225 MW > 2012 to 2038 > Initial tariff estimated at 6 /kwh, to be determined in December 2010 > Negotiated with CVPS and GMP and other Vermont utilities can purchase energy same agreement Vermont legislature's recognition of the renewable nature of hydroelectricity, regardless of size
Northern Pass Transmisson Québec ISO New England Project 13 1,200 MW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) line connecting Des Cantons substation in Québec to a new substation to be built in Franklin, New Hampshire, connecting afterwards to ISO New England s backbone 345 kv transmission system Innovative funding arrangement approved by FERC in May 2009 > Participant funded line > Transmission Service Agreement signed by both parties in October 2010 Access to clean and renewable energy for New England
Export Market New York HQUS committed to supplying min. 900 MW to New York State Hydro-Québec committed to helping New York State reach its objectives in terms of developing renewable energies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions Hydro-Québec open to examining new transmission projects that could allow increase in its energy exports to the southern New York market As of March 2011 (pending FERC approval), HQ will begin dynamic transactions at the NY-Québec border, increasing the ability of New York State's market to integrate intermittent renewable power, especially wind
