Energy Efficiency Indicators Overview The IEA energy efficiency indicators template Energy Statistics Training Paris, 4-8 March, 2013 Taejin Park Energy Efficiency Indicators
World Energy Outlook 2012 Greater efforts on energy efficiency would cut the growth in global energy demand by half by 2035
Overview What information is available from the energy balances? Which further data are needed? The IEA Energy Efficiency Indicators Template
Most countries collect basic energy statistics
which can be combined to build energy balances ENERGY BALANCE
The importance of energy balances WORLD ENERGY BALANCE Supply Transformation Energy dependency Efficiency of the energy sector Shares of energy consumption by sector Final consumption
and its limits No breakdown by end use: - space heating - water heating - lighting - cooking - air conditioning - appliances WORLD ENERGY BALANCE No breakdown by end use and by function of buildings (hospitals, schools, hotels, offices, restaurants, etc.) What most countries collect on a regular basis is limited to aggregated levels Coal & Peat Crude Oil Oil Products Gas Nuclear HydroGeoth/SolarComb. Ren.&Waste Electricity Heat Total OTHER SECTORS IEA Indicator Residential Analysis Comm. & Pub. Services Agriculture/Forestry Fishing Non-specified
Information from energy balance provides useful insights Share of Global TFC Other Transport Service Residential 23% Coal Oil Natural Gas 14% Solid Biofuel Other Transport Service Residential 24% Coal Oil Natural Gas 21% Solid Biofuel Industry Electricity 9% Industry Electricity 20% Mtoe Mtoe Electricity and natural gas account for 41% of global residential energy consumption in 2008; up from 23% in 1973
that can be coupled to macro-economic information to provide further insight on energy consumption patterns Index: 1990=1. Data for IEA18 (Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, USA). Source: IEA energy balances.
but we need more data to understand the full story Index: 1990=1. Data for IEA18 (Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, USA). 24 COVERAGE STATUS A report on the coverage status is automatically updated when new data are entered.
PLOTTING Various options offered for plotting indicators
COMPARING Possibility to compare indicators
The IEA template: 1) provides a starting point for data collection
The IEA template: 2) helps identifying data gaps and issues
Data quality checks Internal consistency Consistency with IEA energy balances Plausibility Gross vs Net Calorific Value Coverage / definitions We try to understand why to help countries overcome the difficulties they face in providing quality data
A manual on Statistics for Energy Efficiency Indicators The IEA is developing a Manual on Statistics for Energy Efficiency Indicators To help countries to collect energy end-use and activity data for the development of energy efficiency indicators To collect best practices from IEA member countries and beyond In cooperation with the ODYSSEE network, APEC, countries, companies and associations Release expected in Fall 2013
CONCLUSIONS Obtaining detailed end-use data is crucial. New but countries are making a big progress. IEA Energy Efficiency Indicators (EEI) Database Data for 1990 to 2009 for IEA countries Most IEA countries already implemented EEI database Very broad interest (UN, WB, APEC, EC...)
CONCLUSIONS The IEA Energy Efficiency Indicators Template is a useful tool to start collecting these data! Thank you for your attention energyindicators@iea.org
