3 TRUST 9,6 millones de CLIENTES Respect for the ENVIRONMENT QUALITY SOCIAL COMMITMENT Pilar Duque García Financial service advisor Trust is about helping clients realise that there is always someone at branches they can speak to. I am convinced that in order to work efficiently and offer quality products it is necessary to be acquainted with clients and to attend to their needs on a one-to-one basis. Social commitment means treating clients as people and adopting an attitude of respect towards the local environment Social Responsibility Report 2006 la Caixa 122

4 la Caixa and the Environment 7.1. Introduction la Caixa is committed to its surrounding society, for which care for the environment has become an increasing concern. In order to address this issue, la Caixa not only conforms to specific environmental regulations, but also proactively seeks the involvement of all la Caixa workers and aims to improve the organisation's processes and consumption. Consequently, environmental responsibility encompasses all its employees and participating companies. la Caixa formalises its commitment to sustainability by way of: 1) a certified environmental management system with which it regularly conducts audits and reviews in its central services, corresponding to internal and external audits and EMAS, as well as in the territorial network of branches in Catalonia; 2) signing up to the UN environmental programme for the financial sector; 3) supporting and funding companies related to the protection of the environment; 4) carrying out awareness activities with its interest groups; and 5) various actions for dissemination and protection of nature carried out by its Obra Social, among other initiatives. This environmental policy was last reviewed in January Key aspects of the relationship between la Caixa and the environment la Caixa is sensitive to the aspects of its activity that are related to sustainability and the environment. Therefore, it provides its clients and society with a wide range of channels and mechanisms so they can overcome their concerns regarding these issues. The institution's answers on these issues are materialised in a host of actions that are channelled and integrated in its business and which go far beyond what is set forth in the legal framework. la Caixa ensures that its actions are completely environmentally friendly by way of a certified environment management system; signing up to the UN environment programme for the financial sector; supporting and funding companies related to the protection of the environment; involving all the institution's employees in its improvement; and carrying out actions for dissemination and protection of nature through its Obra Social Social Responsibility Report 2006 la Caixa 123

6 Response actions la Caixa has a multi-disciplinary Environmental Committee which was set up five years ago. Its functions are to establish, approve and update a management programme that enables the institution to reach the objectives defined in the institution's environmental policy. la Caixa has taken its voluntary commitment to the environment far beyond the framework established by the legislation. Additionally, la Caixa has been part of the UN Financial Institutions Programme (UNEP-FI) since la Caixa applies environmentally responsible purchase criteria. Since 2005, the institution has used the Guía Compra Verde para Oficinas, a document that provides guidance on the sustainable purchase of office material. This affects companies that take part in purchase processes through public auctions. In October 2006, la Caixa was awarded the Environmental Quality Assurance distinction for its network of 1789 branches in Catalonia. It was the first financial institution to receive this distinction. la Caixa makes use of environmental criteria when it comes to the concession of credits in project finance operations and large operations. The most relevant consumptions of la Caixa are those of electric energy and paper. The institution carries out regular monitoring of both these resources in order to implement measures with the aim of reducing and optimising their consumption. la Caixa has cooperated, in conjunction with other institutions, in 17 operations for funding environmental improvement projects for a value of 1580 million euros, 900 milons euros of which have already been secured by this institution. 25,440 training hours given to nigh on 1700 employees on the Environmental Management System ISO course. 7 TRUST Respect for the ENVIRONMENT QUALITY SOCIAL COMMITMENT 7.3. Trust based on respect and protection The environmental committee of la Caixa la Caixa has part-time employees working on environmental issues. The environmental committee, created five years ago, is formed by various departments of la Caixa : audit, efficiency, general services and staff. This committee meets at least twice a year and its functions are establishing, approving and updating a management programme that enables the institution to reach the objectives defined in its environmental policy Institutional participation UN environment Programme The institution has undertaken various voluntary commitments including signing up to the UN Financial Institutions Programme (UNEP-FI) since September By signing the Declaration of Financial Institutions on the Environment and Sustainable Development la Caixa has taken on a commitment in favour of sustainable development, the integration of environmental aspects in operations and services carried out by the financial sector and in favour of awareness and communication. Environmental Quality Assurance distinction The institution's calling for cooperating with other institutions can also be seen in the environmental sphere. Since 2004, la Caixa has institutionally cooperated with the Ministry of the Environment and Housing of the Generalitat Government. The agreement came to a conclusion with the creation of an environmental quality distinction for the network of customer service offices, published in resolution MAH/1389/2006. Since 2003, la Caixa has been part of the UN Financial Institutions Programme (UNEP-FI) Voluntary commitments of la Caixa with regard to the environment: SEPTEMBER 2003 Signing up to the UN Financial Institutions Programme (UNEP-FI). 8 Trust It is worth highlighting that la Caixa acquired the Environmental Quality Assurance distinction in October 2006 for its network of branches in Catalonia. It is the first financial institution to have acquired this distinction. This Ecolabel officially establishes that the network of branches of la Caixa in Catalonia conforms to ecological criteria mainly focused on reducing energy and water consumption as well as waste generation. Likewise, it focuses on increasing the use of environmentally friendly products. This certification is in addition to ISO and the EMAS register, which the institution has already acquired. Compliance with resolution MAH/1389/2006 and the creation of the environmental quality assurance distinction for networks of customer service offices has been verified by AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification. This Ecolabel constitutes a step forward in the commitment of the institution to the continuous improvement of environmental practices and it is also seen as an answer to the concerns of environmentally aware clients. la Caixa has acquired the Environmental Quality Assurance distinction for its network of branches in Catalonia. 9 TRUST Respect for the ENVIRONMENT QUALITY SOCIAL COMMITMENT 7.4. Indirect environmental impact of activities of la Caixa Funding for renewable energy projects A financial institution plays a key role when it comes to generating a positive environmental impact as it can contribute with capital and fund environmentally friendly or renewable energy-based projects. In this respect, during 2006, la Caixa took part in 17 syndicate operations with other institutions for a total value of 1580 milions of euros, 900 milions of euros of which have already been secured by the institution. 11 TRUST Respect for the ENVIRONMENT QUALITY SOCIAL COMMITMENT 7.5. Rules and Certifications The central services of la Caixa are certified in accordance to the ISO standard and the EMAS system as regards the management of all applicable environmental aspects. These are two certificates that lay the foundations of the Environmental Management System of the institution. This system, documented according to the ISO standard and European Regulation 761/2001 (EMAS), was first applied in the central services located in Barcelona in Its most significant points are covered in the environmental declaration, an internally disseminated document that is accessible to the public over the institution's corporate website and in the Property Register. The regular review of the environmental management system improves its performance. In this respect, various internal and external audits are carried out every year with the aim of verifying the continual improvement of the system and renewing the respective environmental certifications. Additionally, as stated previously, la Caixa has acquired the Ecolabel certificate from the Generalitat Government for its network of branches. 12 Quality 7.6. Analysis of environmental risks in the concession of credits la Caixa, is aware of the significance of an adequate study and the correct formalisation of credit transactions, with regard to both the reliability of transactions and the level of environmental friendliness of the economic activity. Thus, it has a risk criteria protocol which all branches can have access to. This protocol describes the main requirements to be considered when analysing a transaction. When it comes to studying a transaction, various qualitative aspects should be taken into consideration in the sphere of client analysis. One of these aspects is environmental risk analysis, since the institution believes that environmental protection is of great significance when it comes to assessing the risks. During the assessment process for the concession of a credit, it is important to verify that current regulations are complied with and that no potential problems result from a lack of respect to environmental rules which, in turn, could affect the stability of the business. Likewise, it should be verified that measures are adopted for minimising environmental risk to the greatest extent possible. This process is particularly relevant in project finance operations, as it is important to not overlook the potential environmental impact from the outset of the operation. la Caixa takes environmental risks into consideration in its credit concession processes. In this respect, special attention is paid to certain issues, such as whether the service provider complies with applicable regulations in each case or whether it has acquired certificates of adhesion to environmental management systems (EMAS, ISO 14001, etc.). Therefore, it is of utmost importance to take into account the assessment of the technical characteristics of the production centres of these companies in order to ensure that they conform to environmental regulations, the study of preventive investments carried out or the taking out of specific insurance policies in order to cover for accidents Environmental requirements for suppliers Environmental impact must be analysed from an internal and direct perspective of the organisation. Likewise, the whole value chain and its responsible action must be taken into consideration. The institution incorporates a clause of commitment to environmental legislation, especially as regards waste management, in its contracts with suppliers. This clause is present in all the contracts undertaken with suppliers to la Caixa. In addition, la Caixa applies environmentally responsible purchase criteria. Throughout 2006, the Environmentally Friendly Purchase Guide for Branches, which was created in 2005, was implemented. This document offers advice when it comes to purchasing environmentally sustainable office material and affects the companies taking part in purchase processes through public auctions. This guide seeks to couple quality and minimal environmental impact. It provides recommendations for purchasing material as well as a questionnaire for the supplier. The supplier must fill in this questionnaire by giving a mark to various considerations relating to the treatment that their company gives to differing environmental aspects. la Caixa applies environmentally responsible purchase criteria. Since 2005, the institution has used the Environmentally Friendly Purchase Guide for Branches, a document that offers advice when it comes to purchasing environmentally sustainable office material and affects the companies taking part in purchase processes through public auctions Social Responsibility Report 2006 la Caixa 131

13 7.8. Direct environmental impact of the activities of la Caixa Despite the fact that the activities carried out by la Caixa do not have significant impacts on the environment, the institution is willing to provide a comprehensive answer to all aspects derived from its activities. This need is the result of everyday work, which eventually produced small indirect impacts, such as the consumption of resources or the generation of waste and emissions. The most relevant consumption of la Caixa corresponds to electric energy and paper. The regular monitoring of the measures implemented by la Caixa allow for the optimisation of both consumptions. The total direct costs of environmental management throughout 2006 rose to 74, euros Internal consumption: indicators and improvement initiatives Branches la Caixa has carried out the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of its branches. This study enables la Caixa to identify and upgrade options for reducing environmental impacts of branches. Electric energy In recent years la Caixa has carried out various initiatives in order to adapt its central services and its network of branches to optimum environmental requirements. One of these initiatives has been to install automatic lighting systems in areas that are essentially unoccupied, such as toilets, archives and basements. Additionally, all the institution's PCs and TFT monitors have acquired FCC, Energy Star and GS mark (TUV) certificates, which assure lower, more efficient energy consumption. Diesel oil The consumption of diesel oil is exclusively generated by emergency equipment. Consequently, its consumption is not significant. Water The water consumption as well as the central buildings and network of branches is provided by the municipal net. The time for which water is released from automatic sanitary taps in the central services of la Caixa has been reduced. This action is in addition to the change of the cooling towers last year. In 2006 the consumption of water in said building increased with regard to the previous year. This is due to the fact that in 2005 the decorative fountains located at the entrance of the building were disconnected from June to September out of respect for 12 million client signatures and identity documents and 12 million digitised contracts Indirect energy consumption broken down according to primary energy consumed (GJ) Coal 105, , ,330 Natural Gas Oil 22,215 23,232 24,683 Biomass Wind Hydraulic 12,404 12,972 13,782 Nuclear 100, , ,175 Conversion factor: GJ per kwh: Source: GRI technical protocols. 15 The installation of Green Points consisting of differentiated bins for the selective collection of paper, ink, used batteries, plastic and ink cartridges was completed at the beginning of 2006 The amount of waste generated in the central services building to be recycled has increased over the previous year due to an improvement in the selective collection of the materials the drought period at the time. This situation did not take place in the following year. Moreover, three extra cleaning tasks were carried out on these fountains in 2006 and, due to the works on the new lifts, the water of the air conditioning system was changed as well as that from the sprinklers and from the sanitary water system. The possibility of reusing the water of the decorative fountains for other uses is currently being studied. Paper Paper is the main waste of the activities of la Caixa. Accordingly, the institution has a wellestablished treatment policy for this material both in the area that affects clients and the internal area. As a result, in July 2006 a series of environmental awareness initiatives of la Caixa were implemented regarding the printing of documents; namely, to avoid printing paper as far as possible or to print only one copy with the printing of a second copy being optional. The institution has also promoted the use of recycled paper. As a result, 42% of paper currently used is recycled. As far as clients are concerned, la Caixa offers them the Personalised Correspondence Service, which substitutes the physical mailing of letters for electronic documents. Therefore, the use of paper for making extracts and envelopes is much lower. la Caixa has reduced the number of printed notifications sent to its clients by more than 31,641,420 throughout the previous year. 832,229 accounts currently have this service. In addition to the CaixaMóvil alert service, included in the services offered by Línea Abierta, the unification of documentation mailings to clients and the service Recibo Único, which are aimed at raising awareness about the consumption of paper, two more initiatives were implemented in These stem from the desire of la Caixa to offer innovative products and services that have a positive environmental impact. These two initiatives are the digitisation of more than 12 million client signatures and identity documents, and 12 million contracts, on the one hand, which will allow a significant reduction of storage, consultation and transmission of documentation on paper format; and the elimination of remittances or the incorporation of barcodes in remittances, on the other hand, which has reduced the physical circulation of documents in the network and brought about a considerable saving in paper. Lastly, the institution is currently conducting a study on the paper used for the extracts of the WASTE GENERATED IN CENTRAL SERVICES FOR RECYCLING 148,970 80,115 39,400 26,820 62,070 19,620 37,240 18,240 51, PAPER CARDBOARD PLASTIC Social Responsibility Report 2006 la Caixa 134

Ink cartridges (units) Computer cartridges (kg) Chemical products packages (Kg.) _ bank books provided by the manufacturing suppliers, specifically examining the type and size of this paper with the aim of analysing its impact and studying its improvement Waste management and recycling Some of the urban waste generated by la Caixa has a small impact on the environment. In spite of its barely discernible repercussion in comparison with other sectors, the institution makes sure that waste is treated via legally established channels. la Caixa has an internal regulation that assures suitable waste treatment according to its characteristics. Due to its significance, intense activity and size, the central services building generates various types of waste, such as rubble, remains of wood, plastic, glass, furniture, etc. Although they do not constitute dangerous waste, they are continually collected by the authorised managers. The collection of other waste, such as batteries, cells, fluorescents, chemical product packages, etc. is also incumbent on authorised managers. la Caixa has acquired the Green Points, as they are called, for waste management and recycling by central services employees. These Green Points consist of differentiated bins for the selective collection of paper, ink, used batteries, plastic and ink cartridges. The installation of these Green Points was completed at the beginning of As far as computer equipment is concerned, at the end of their working life they are removed to a warehouse, transported and recycled by an authorised manager Atmospheric emissions The impact of la Caixa on the atmosphere is based on the emission of greenhouse gases as a result of management activities and, in the event of an emergency, the operation of turbines and generators, as well as the air-conditioning of its premises. As far as indirect emissions are concerned, these are a result of electric consumption and travel. The institution makes improvements in accordance with commitments undertaken in the Kyoto Protocol regarding CO 2 emissions. As a result, la Caixa has installed capacitor banks to compensate for the reactive electric energy of electric contracts above 15 Kw. Illuminated signs have also been redesigned, thereby optimising lighting efficiency by incorporating LEDs. As far as the internal lighting of branches and offices is concerned, working areas have been differentiated from the rest of the premises with general lighting. This represents a reduction in the power installed and a subsequent improvement in the electric Social Responsibility Report 2006 la Caixa 135

17 la Caixa offers the ISO Environmental Management System course for training and awareness raising, through which a total of 25,440 hours' training were given to 1700 employees in 2006 consumption in the region of 30% with respect to previous models. On winter nights and weekends the heat generated by the cooling plants in the data processing centre is used to achieve an adequate maintenance temperature in the central services building. This would also be the case for lower or extreme temperatures during the day. Throughout 2006 la Caixa carried out a total of 25,041,884 kilometres of corporate travel; thereby generating 3,176,663 kg of CO 2 emissions. Distance data has been transformed into CO 2 emissions according to the World Resources Institute (WRI) Environmental education and awareness Awareness is one of the key elements for implementing any environmental policy. Consequently, la Caixa includes subjects related to environmental friendliness in its education programmes. Virt@ula provides an environmental awareness course aimed at all employees, especially recommended for new recruits. Its objective is to introduce employees to basic terminology on sustainable development and to assess the impact of the institution's working and everyday activities and its environment. This education revolves around two key points: how management affects each employee's day-to-day activities and how employees can take part in the improvement of this environmental management. Throughout 2006, 1696 employees of la Caixa took part in the ISO Environmental Management System course, through which a total of 25,440 hours' training have been given. All staff of la Caixa are responsible to act according to the environmental requirements specified either in the processes or in internal regulations. la Caixa understands responsibility as a concept which is intimately tied to proactivity. Therefore, it offers its employees the chance of directly conveying their environmental initiatives through a box created for that purpose. In addition, new employees take part in a monthly competition in which they come up with ideas for improving the environment in the branches to which they are going to be assigned. The new initiatives to be implemented are published regularly in the internal journal. As far as the promotion of suggestions in this field is concerned, la Caixa seeks to promote the use of the suggestion box in order to compile ideas regarding environmental improvement. The proposals received are then examined by the Environmental Committee. As regards awareness, the top priority of la Caixa is to strengthen the file on consumption according to the centre. It entails information that is used to promote best practices among employees. The institution also wants to raise awareness among its employees about the need to make correct use of the specific bins by means of Green Points, bin supplements and also by showing photos depicting unsuitable actions.
