On World Water Day, people everywhere show that they care and that they have the power to make a difference. They get inspired by information and use it to take action and change things. This year many will focus on the power that water and jobs have to transform people s lives. Nearly all jobs are related to water and those that ensure its safe delivery. But today, millions of people who work in water are often not recognized or even protected by basic labour rights. This needs to change.
The Veolia Tool Kit for World Water Day is to raise awareness on where water comes from and how it contributes to our day to day lives as well as our jobs! The idea is an Interactive Roadshow/Workshop Format with different people at each station to give their aspect of Water & Jobs 1. Each has a station and presents the different facts, devices and challenges 2. Teams walk around the stations and speak to each of the stations 3. Station 5: Water bill challenge could be a separate station or a group exercise Not all stations will be relevant to your contract so use the ones that are interesting! Station 1 Station 2 Station 3 Station 4 Station 5 What do Veolia do for water regionally and worldwide? How do we help? What uses water in the office & at home? How many bottles of water does that equal? Where does water come from in the region? How much energy is that? Is it safe? What can you use tap water for? What are water saving devices? How can they help? Where can you buy them? Water bill challenge, Check your consumption and compare to country consumption, why?

Liters per Flush Did you know that: An average person flushes 5 times so in total 30l to 70l per day Toilets are the appliance with the highest water consumption in an average household 14 liters vs. 6 liters How you can save water: Use the low volume flush as much as possible Don t use your toilet as a trash can Place a heavy, bulky object in the tank to adjust the amount of water per flush
Liters per load Did you know that: The Water Factor (WF) serves as an indicator to make different models and sizes comparable in terms of water consumption per kg of laundry How you can save water: Run full loads only Use regular and normal program as much as possible 110 liters vs. 57 liters
Liters per Minute (lpm) Did you know that: An 8 min shower consumes 63 liters of water (Flowrate 7.9 lpm) A lower flow rate has little impact on the necessary shower duration while consuming much less water 9.5 liters vs. 2.8 liters How you can save water: Take shorter showers Turn the shower off while soaping and shampooing If you have to wait while the water is heating, collect the cold water in a bucket (e.g. to water plants with it)
Liters per Minute (lpm) Did you know that: Water flow rate impacts water consumption of households significantly Reducing the flow decreases not only the water consumption but also the electricity consumption as less water needs to be heated 8.3 liters vs. 1.9 liters How you can save water: Install faucet aerators Close faucets as soon as possible Fix drips or leaks immediately
The impact of one drop (0.05ml) per second: Liters Per hour day week year

Reverse Osmosis X 1000 Carbon Footprint 3,500 gco2/m3 Distillation Uses 4 KWh of energy to produce 1,000 liter of water. That s the same as 8% of 1 barrel of oil! X 1000 Carbon Footprint 7,000 to 10,000 gco2/m3 Uses between 7.5 KWh for new thermal technology and 15.5 KWh for the old technology, of energy to produce 1,000 liter of water. That s the same as 15% to 20% of 1 barrel of oil!
Surface Water Treatment Carbon Footprint 200 gco2/m3 X 1000 Groundwater Treatment Carbon Footprint 200 gco2/m3 Uses 0.2 kwh of energy to produce 1,000 liter of water. That s less than 0.05 % of 1 barrel of oil!
Reverse Osmosis Distillation
Bottled water Desalinated water Reuse water Drinking Cooking All industrial usage Cooking Cleaning Cooling Irrigation of landscapes Agriculture
Water Saving Showerheads Reduce the flow and still get the same pressure! Waterless Car Wash Still get the car clean but without the water! Dual Flush Toilet Gives a light flush or a heavy flush to suit the purpose A normal showers uses 65 litres! This can reduce it to as low as 25 litres!!!! They are everywhere but do you use them properly?! It can save up to 75,000 litres per year!
Tap Aerators Reduce the flow through the tap by introducing air Still get the same pressure! Shower Timers Watch the time go down but when you go over. Every minute counts! Reduces water & energy Can save up to 12 litres per minute

Name Volume used per month Volume/day Rank
How many people live in your house? More people higher usage Do you have a green garden? Check where your irrigation water comes from, can you change it? Check the sprinklers come on only at night (less evaporation, so more for the plants!) Do you have a dishwasher? Use the Eco setting! If you hand wash, fill the bowl! Don t leave the tap running! Do you have a washing machine? Use the Eco setting! And reduce the temperature to reduce energy usage Do you have a car? Only wash it when you need too Use low water methods or even waterless products How old are your appliances? Check the ratings of new appliances to choose efficient models Do you shower or bath? Showers are much more water efficient but if you do have a bath fill it with the correct temperature to avoid adding extra later For showers get a shower timer!! Do you have a dual flush toilet? Use it!
