1 Summary of the socio-economic impact of Copernicus in the EU ESA Since the entry into service of Copernicus first satellite, Sentinel-1A, in 2014, the impacts of the programme are witnessed beyond the upstream industry, and bring economic, social, environmental and strategic benefits to the European EO downstream sector as well as to the wider community of final users. Tangible examples of cost reductions, additional revenues or environmental improvements are great illustrations of the types of contribution Copernicus can generate for both EO applications developers and non space markets. 2 Socio-economic impact of Copernicus in the EU by sector AGRICULTURE Mostly used for precision farming, Copernicus data already represents 13% of the total EO data used Applications: seasonal mapping of cultivated areas, water management, support to subsidy control FORESTRY UN s REDD Programme compels its 26 country members to obtain highly accurate and precise EO data on Forests Applications: cartographies of forest, change mapping, detecting and monitoring forest fires 26 % Cost reduction for an irrigation management service in Austria URBAN MONITORING EO data has a key role to play in the smart cities growing market Applications: monitoring of urban growth and ground motion, 3D modelling construction, transportation route mapping Sentinel-2 data will improve significantly the quality of forest mappings INSURANCE EO enables the development of index products, hence to address new markets Applications: forecasting of cyclones and hurricanes routes, floods early warning, index insurance policies 6 K Yearly savings for construction companies using a work progress monitoring app OCEAN MONITORING EO data addresses well the rapidly changing parameters as it provides precise and frequently updated data Applications: measuring water quality, monitoring algal blooms and coastal areas, mapping fishing zones and marine protected areas 172 M Forecasted European market for pastures insurance against natural hazards (from 2025) OIL AND GAS EO data is combined with other sources (UAVs, in-situ, internal data ) to deliver GIS products and services Applications: supporting exploration, drilling, transport, logistics or safety through maps and measurements 5 % Increased productivity of fish farmers by monitoring toxic algal blooms RENEWABLE ENERGY EO data is particularly useful for biomass and solar energy Applications: site selection, plants and facilities design, solar and wind farm maintenance, production forecasting 18 M Yearly cost saving in the Netherlands through pipeline management Source: EARSC AIR QUALITY EO data were only recently inserted in Air Quality monitoring compared to other data sources Applications: air quality nowcasting and forecasting, pollutant fluxes tracking, hotspots detection 2 % Increased revenues of photovoltaic electricity producers by improving production forecasts 60 % Improved precision of the analysis of pollutants coming from trans-boundary movements
