4 BS EN ISO Who Who is BS EN ISO for? ISO is suitable for any organization whatever your size, sector or geographical location. It is particularly relevant if you operate in an energy intensive industry or one facing GHG emissions regulation or legislation.

The Energy Management Assessment Process The assessment is typically conducted in two stages. Stage one An assessor looks at top level policy, documentation, processes and procedures that manage the energy consumption. Stage Two of the assessment is focused on the effective implementation of the policy, documentation, processes and procedures and will involve discussions with all levels of staff within your organization. Subject to a successful EnMS assessment, a certificate of registration is issued to demonstrate the scope of your activities, the locations covered, and the standard against which you have been assessed.

9 BS EN ISO and Other Standards BS EN :2012 Energy audits. General requirements Applies to commercial, industrial, residential and publicsector organisations, excluding individual private dwellings. The standard does not deal with the energy audit programme properties (such as administration, training of energy auditors, quality control issues, energy auditors' tools,etc.). Specifies the common methodology and deliverables for energy audits. Covers the general requirements common to all energy audits. Specific energy audit requirements will complete the general requirements in separate parts dedicated to energy audits for buildings, industrial processes and transportation.

18 BSI Case Study Thornhill Heat Exchangers Thornhill Heat Exchangers Ltd is a world leader in the servicing, manufacture and supply of heat exchangers and of aftermarket plate heat exchanger gaskets. Aims: Ensure compliance Operate low carbon footprint Reduce energy use Benefits Immediate costs savings identified Development of an energy management policy Demonstrate commitment to customers

19 BSI Case Study Thornhill Heat Exchangers Implementation The Thornhill team looked at their current business processes and policies, drafted and adapted procedures in line with the plan-do-check-act model that underpins ISO and so put in place the structure to enable them to implement the new standard. The group looked at hypothetical situations to evaluate opportunities for energy saving. A walk around the Thornhill manufacturing site with the energy engineers from Projective to identify any possible quick wins for energy saving immediately identified total cost savings of around 150,000 per year. These ranged from installing a group office light switch for 50 to save an estimated 360 per year to condensing the boiler stack gas and using the heat for hot water which would save an estimated 36,000 per year at an estimated installation cost of only 35,000.

20 BSI Case Study Thornhill Heat Exchangers Mike Thornhill said, Although from a finance point of view it is useful to use a set formula for dividing costs between the revenue streams of the business, when it comes to energy management it is much more important to evaluate usage against revenue proper in order to leverage savings. The workshop made me realize the potential we had for better use of our resources.

22 BSI Case Study City of London Conclusion Energy Manager, explained: For those who have a level of experience and are looking to improve and embed good energy management, ISO could be invaluable, especially for local authorities that can have very bold targets on carbon emissions but have a huge gulf between the aspiration and the practicalities of implementation. We are never content with maintaining the status quo, we are always looking to and being encouraged to improve. Energy manager also sees the value of the standard in potential cost savings and in giving more weight to energy management: raising the profile internally, and gaining external recognition for the rigour in its energy management activity.

25 BSI Case Study Camfil Farr Camfil chose to integrate its management systems with common procedures that were already in place through ISO and ISO helped the company focus on continual improvement of energy performance. Key to the company s success has been engaging and involving every member of staff. There has been a positive effect on employees to improve energy management. The company has an energy efficient culture and values least effort /biggest reward. Camfil staff are continuously rewarded for their energy saving initiatives via a bonus scheme which includes a 1% for energy reduction in pay reviews. A representative added: Energy savings require the commitment of top management and the whole workforce. There ideally needs to be a champion in the organization who can drive change and savings. He also noted that the certificate of registration could be amended to reflect the savings that an organization has achieved Camfil have reduced energy costs from 500,000 in 2008 to 300,000 to date

26 BSI Case Study Camfil Farr Conclusions The company is proud to be a sustainable organisation in both its operations and the products it manufactures. Camfil has reduced its energy bill year on year, saving carbon and hitting sustainability targets. They have also enjoyed improved PR through certification to ISO and numerous awards including the Carbon Reduction Award for SMEs, the Kitemark for Energy Reduction Verification (ERV) by BSI and the Best Engineering Plant of the Year presented by Cranfield School of Management. The Managing Director added: Our energy efficient culture costs us nothing and our employees enjoy it. Having a formal standard like ISO in place demonstrates our commitment at all levels across the organization. This approach saves money and protects the environment.

27 Technical Issues The Management System can be considered a platform but it is the measures taken by an enterprise which will allow for energy efficiency to be measured and cost effective solution are found What is required are agreed measurements that demonstrate reduction in energy uses and reduction of GHG emissions
