SmartGridCity - Boulder, Colo. An international showcase of smart grid possibilities a comprehensive demonstration of an intelligent grid community Test technology Integrate smart grid portfolio of projects Prove benefits
Boulder s Key Strengths Ideal size (50,000 customers/meters) Ideal geographic location (easy access to needed grid components) Ideal Smart Grid consumers: Web-savvy, early adopters Environmentally aware Collaborative opportunities with: University of Colorado National Center for Atmospheric Research National Institute of Standards and Technology City leaders
SmartGridCity Involves the entire energy pathway from the power source to the home and all points in between Rich in IT High-speed, real-time, two-way communications Sensors enabling rapid diagnosis and corrections Dispatched distributed generation (PHEVs, wind, solar) Energy storage In-home energy controls Automated home energy use
Xcel SmartGridCity - Technologies That Must be Integrated A dynamic system rich in information technology High-speed, real-time, two-way communications Sensors throughout the grid to enable rapid diagnosis and corrections Decision-making data and support for peak efficiency Distributed generation technologies (wind turbines, solar panels, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, etc.) Automated smart substations In-home energy control devices Automated home energy use
Amsterdam Smart City (1/2) Context Considering the EU 20/20/20 climate challenge, the Netherlands have formulated specific national objectives with their corresponding targets. Amsterdam wants to position itself as a long term green / sustainable city and has defined objectives even more ambitious than the national ones. Program Amsterdam Smart City Objectives Amsterdam Smart City contributes to the Amsterdam Climate program by gathering different commercial players to collaborate in the building and exchange of knowledge, in the appliance of Innovation and Technology, and in the stimulation of changes in the final consumers behaviors. Structure The program does focus on the following 4 domains: Sustainable Living Sustainable Working Sustainable Municipality Sustainable Transport Amsterdam s climate objectives: CO2 neutral by % of sustainable energy by % reduction in CO2 emission by 2025 (vs. 1990) In order to achieve these objectives, the Amsterdam City has launched a climate program Nieuw Amsterdams Klimaat Partners Beside Accenture, the following partners are involved in the Amsterdam Smart City program : Amsterdam Climate Bureau Amsterdam Innovation Motor Alliander House Corporations Real Estate companies International Lightings companies Waste companies International Advertising companies Smart Grid: enabler 12
Amsterdam Smart City (2/2) Rol Accenture Scope Accenture plays a Program Management role: Strategy partnerships Strategy definition and program management setup Selection, prioritization, and clustering of sustainable initiatives Approach and bring together required partners Development of program documentation, including workshop organization and interviews (deliverables) Continuous development of new concepts Key Deliverables Short list of prioritized initiatives Workshops for project progress/status Project documentation for each domain (and pilot): Project Charter Business Cases Project planning Pilot projects as preparation to larger-scale implementation Status Amsterdam Smart City Results so far Diverse pilot projects have been started; different combinations of innovative sustainable technologies will be applied to e.g.: Residential building site with more than houses, A well-known Amsterdam commercial street, The port of Amsterdam The applied technologies include smart meters, energy displays, energy advice, LED lightening, electric cars, loading point, new logistic solutions, etc. An universal approach for the design and the execution of a sustainability projects Knowledge is shared internationally and the collection of information from a Smart City Network is possible 13
