2 A Breakthrough in Decontamination Technology Continuous Effluent Decontamination (CED) is a new technology for decontaminating hazardous infectious waste. Far superior to traditional kill tanks, the STERIS CED System is a pre-engineered solution that offers dramatic improvements in efficacy, reliability, safety, and costeffectiveness. For Research and Production Labs Rigorous decontamination of waste effluents is required for most biological level-2, -3 and -4 facilities, where the presence of hazardous substances demands tight controls on materials handling and disposal. The STERIS CED System allows research, production, and bio-containment labs to safely process nearly any biologically contaminated liquid effluent before discharge. Doors on all sides provide easy servicing access. View ports allow direct visual confirmation of system operation. No More Kill Tanks CED is the first new technology for hazardous fluid decontamination in decades. Traditional kill tank systems, which collect fluid in a large tank to be boiled and drained when the tank is full, use outdated technology with serious flaws. Custom-created for each lab, they lack standards for validation, components and manufacturing. Without advanced control systems, their efficacy is difficult to monitor. And with duplicate or even triplicate gallon tanks that require large emergency containment basins, they create risk while occupying expensive laboratory space. The CED System is designed to allow effective operation and servicing while assuring staff safety. > Closed System: The CED System is sealed, preventing any contact with hazardous effluent once it has entered the system. > Protective Capture Basin: In the unlikely event of a system leak, the capture basin safely contains the liquid within the safety cabinet. > Temperature Sensors: Multiple, redundant temperature sensors are provided, with hardwired interlock for closing the outlet valves in case of falling temperatures. > Plexiglass Viewing Panels: Operators can observe process control and system status with full protection. > CIP Control and Interlock: The control system will not permit Clean-In-Place (CIP) cleaning without first sterilizing the buffer tank and integral piping for safety. > Room Leak Indicator and Alarm: Room leak indicator alarms if a water leak is detected or if the sump is overfilled. 4 The advanced PLC control system provides full operational capabilities. The operator interface can be integrally located or mounted remotely. Accessory Options > Control panel is installed in a separate cabinet which can be remotely mounted up to 30 ft away. Dual operator panels (additional panel mounted on the decontamination unit control box door) are available as an optional feature. > Magnetic Coupled Mixing System prevents sediment from settling in the buffer tank - without violating tank integrity. > Chart Recorder documents critical temperatures and pressure. 5 How Continuous Effluent Decontamination Technology Works The STERIS CED System continuously processes effluent through three independent processing zones. 1. Buffer Tank The system stores incoming effluent in an appropriately sized tank made of high-quality 316L stainless steel. 3. Cooling System After decontamination, the system reduces effluent temperature below the regulatory requirement of 140 F (60 C) for safe discharge. 2. Decontamination System Effluent is decontaminated by heating it to 302 F (150 C). Continuous temperature monitoring, a unique safety barrier and a redundant back-up pump system give superior reliability to the decontamination system.
