3 Tacolyn resin dispersions A major supplier to the adhesives industry, Eastman manufactures and sells dispersions of rosin- and hydrocarbon-derived tackifying resins for use in waterbased adhesives and sealants. These dispersions are prepared through a proprietary, solvent-free process. With a broad range of hydrocarbon- and rosin-derived base resins from which to start, Eastman offers a complete line of Tacolyn resin dispersions. Eastman manufactures dispersions with a range of softening points and polymer compatibility for use in many pressure-sensitive and non-pressure-sensitive adhesive applications. 4 Tacolyn resin dispersions Piping The size of the piping is determined by the desired volumetric throughput. Care must be taken to keep turbulence to a minimum. A velocity of 3 ft/s is the recommended maximum. Any metal is suitable where only the possible contamination to the product is to be considered. Polyethylene materials are also suitable. The excellent cold-water stability of the products permits rapid flushing. Provisions should be made for flush-out connections at both ends of the piping. Plugged or capped tee-connections allow rapid flushing and minimum pipe maintenance. If flushing into the product storage tank, softened or deionized water should be used. Avoid using solvents, even low-boiling solvents, to flush piping since any residual solvent will be emulsified when the dispersion passes through the piping again. Pumps Wherever possible, it is advisable to use air pressure or gravity systems for moving the dispersions. These systems are relatively maintenance free and have the least possibility of causing mechanical damage to the product. Avoid using positive-displacement or centrifugal pumps. This is particularly true in recirculating systems. Air-operated, double-diaphragm pumps are suggested for applications requiring higher head pressures or volumetric throughput. Filtration Filtration is recommended for applications sensitive to coarse particles. The average particle size of Eastman water-based resin dispersions is less than 1 µm. Coarse particles, formed as a result of evaporation in partially used drums, are generally larger than 45 µm and are easily filtered. Avoid filtration through very small micron size filters at either high pressure or high rate because the shear forces may cause additional coarse particles to form. 4

5 Tacolyn resin dispersions Sampling Creaming or sedimentation may occur during storage and shipment. These do not in any way represent a breaking of the product and are fully reversible processes. However, the dispersion products should be carefully mixed before sampling and analysis. Tank-truck quantities should be sampled from the top and the bottom and analyzed separately, or the material should first be pumped into the storage tank and then sampled. Drummed or toted material can be mixed with a low-shear motorized mixer or by hand, using a paddle. Chemical contamination Contamination of process equipment and piping with incompatible materials should be avoided. Eastman waterbased resin dispersions are sensitive to some electrolytes and may be permanently damaged by contamination with quantities as low as 80 parts per million (ppm). Such contaminants include acids, bases, and metal salts. Ion tolerance may be greater with some products than others. Storage and handling of Tacolyn water-based resin dispersions Shipping Tacolyn water-based resin dispersions are shipped in lined fiber drums, disposable totes, or tank trucks. For drums and totes, these products may be pumped or gravity fed into the storage tank. For tank trucks, these products may be pumped, gravity fed, or blown. When using air pressure to unload these products from tank trucks, care must be taken not to blow air through the material, which will result in foaming. Foaming can be prevented by the gradual throttling of the unloading valve when the truck is nearly empty. 5

6 Tacolyn resin dispersions Bulk storage Products should be stored in coated, iron, or steel tanks or in polyethylene tanks if not exposed to freezing conditions. Any suitable coating or the use of stainless steel storage vessels is advisable. Tanks should be equipped with a manhead at least 18 in. in diameter for occasional inspection and cleaning. The tank drain should be 3 in. in diameter and flanged. Charging the tank by pumping in through the drain is preferred. Care must be taken to avoid free fall and the generation of foam. Dip lines should not be used; they retain a stagnant product that might separate on standing. All other tank openings should be reasonably tight to reduce evaporation. It is important to keep the product moving during storage to prevent sedimentation and surface crusting. However, high shear agitation will cause mechanical damage to the product and should therefore be avoided. It is recommended that the interior or storage vessels be periodically cleaned to lessen the risk of bacterial attack. Some resin dispersions contain biocides which lose effectiveness over time while other dispersions are naturally resistant to bacteria. Temperature The recommended storage temperature range is F. Freezing must be avoided. At temperatures below 50 F, the material may paste. Chilled or near-frozen material may be brought back to a usable condition by slowly elevating the temperature with no agitation. Because temperature cycling may lead to permanent damage of the product, it is important to maintain a constant storage temperature. Heated tanks must be designed to maintain temperatures without creating localized surface heating above 100 F. When products are stored in a warehouse, be aware of localized heating. Do not store products near space heaters or steam heaters such as fin pipe steam heaters that run along walls. Jacketed vessels and jacketed piping that circulate a heattransfer fluid in a closed-loop system are preferred. Note: Freeze indicators are applied before shipment to every tenth drum of product to monitor handling conditions while in transit. Freeze indicators are also applied to every fourth tote shipment.
