3 Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre (GCPC) is a specialized agency of Government of Gujarat established in the year 1998 by the Department of Industries & Mines, Government of Gujarat with technical support of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), mandated to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development promoting the application of Cleaner Production & Clean Technology. GCPC is internationally functioning as a regular member of Global Network of Resource Efficient & Cleaner Production of UNIDO and Climate Technology Centre & Network, a working arm of UNFCCC hosted by UNEP in collaboration with UNIDO. GCPC nationally acts as an Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre since 2003 for Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India to promote the theme of Cleaner Production & Clean Technology across the country. GCPC has played vital role in framing Gujarat Industrial Policy 2004, 2009 & 2015 in developing many financial assistance schemes pertaining to Cleaner Production & Clean Technology. The Centre regularly organizes orientation programmes, capacity building programmes and training on Cleaner Production & Clean Technologies for students, teachers and industrial technocrats across various industrial estates and academic institutions of the state. The major thrust of the centre is conducting CP assessment projects and demonstration projects in individual industries of the State and to motivate industries towards pollution prevention and resource conservation. The results achieved by conducting assessment projects are beingreplicated,conducting dissemination programmes. GCPC has so far conducted more than 500 orientation programmes in Academic Institutions, Industries Associations and Government and Non-Government Organizations. The centre has successfully completed more than 200 demonstration projects in various sectors inclusive of Textile, Dairy, Pulp & Paper, Chemical, Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Fish Processing, Electroplating, Bentonite Manufacturing, Ceramic, Glass, Rerolling Mills etc. GCPC has also published guidelines on CP for seventeen Major Polluting Sectors identified by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Government of India. With efforts of GCPC, Cleaner Production has been included as a subject in curriculum of B.E. and M.E. Environment in colleges of Gujarat, to motivate students towards Cleaner Production & Clean Technologies. GCPC has compiled a book on Cleaner Production named Cleaner Production and Its Application to Industries which is being referred as text book while teaching Cleaner Production as a subject in Academic Institutions. 4 The United Nations Environment,earlier known as (UNEP) defines of Cleaner Production asthe continuous application of an integrated, preventative environmental strategy to processes, products and services to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and the environment. For production processes, Cleaner Production results, from one or a combination of measures, conserving raw materials, water and energy; eliminating toxic and dangerous raw materials; reducing the quantity and toxicity of all emissions and wastes at source during the production process. For products, Cleaner Production aims to reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of products over their entire life cycles, i.e. beginning from raw materials extraction, through manufacturing and use, to the ultimate disposal of the product. For services, Cleaner Production implies incorporating environmental concerns into designing and delivering services. Cleaner Production can reduce the environmental impact thus reducing operating cost, improve profitability and worker safety of your business. Companies are often surprised at the cost reductions achievable through the adoption of Cleaner Production techniques. Frequently, minimal or no capital expenditure is required to achieve worthwhile gains, with fast pay-back periods. Waste handling charges, raw material usage and insurance premiums can often be cut, along with potential risks. Yet most companies in the region remain unaware of the potential cost savings and environmental benefits of cleaner production.cleaner production is the improvement in operational processes to make more efficient use of inputs such as raw materials, water and power along a company s value chain. On a broader scale, Cleaner Production can help to reduce the problems like solid, liquid and gaseous emission by doing efficient manufacturing practices. Effective cleaner production interventions not only help to conserve resources and reduce waste, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but can also reduce operating costs. Cleaner Production does not deny growth; it merely insists that growth be ecologically sustainable. It should not be considered only as environmental strategy, because it also relates to economic considerations. In this context, waste is considered as a product which can be used as a raw material to other industry. Each action to reduce consumption of raw materials and energy, prevent or reduce generation of waste, increase productivity and bring financial benefits to the enterprise. Cleaner Production is a win-win strategy. It protects the environment, the consumer and the worker while improving industrial efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness. The key difference between pollution control and Cleaner Production is therefore one of timing. Pollution control is an after-the-event, react and treat approach while Cleaner Production is a forward-looking, anticipate and prevent philosophy. 3

5 Capacity Building of Academicians GCPC believes in philosophy, academicians play an important role in nurturing society; because today s students are tomorrow s leaders with this philosophy and as a citizen of proud nation our organization focuses on Capacity Building of Academicians, because they are knowledge providers and they help in building a strong foundation towards sustainable development providing education to the society. The objective behind organizing this programme is to promote research and development activities in the field of CP and CT including developing the skill and expertise, to create Sustainable Development in the state of Gujarat. The programme emphasizes on providing single knowledge sharing platform to the participants and on delivering a well balanced training on Cleaner Production covering current environmental issues. Capacity Building Programme for Academicians will offer a unique opportunity to debate industrial and manufacturing issues in depth, and will give more research based opportunities to the academicians. This programme will provide opportunity to academicians, researchers, representatives from industries and government officials to share their views towards creating sustainable development to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of UNDP. Every single activity of our programme aims to empower trainers and to make them agents of positive change. Our capacity building efforts offer an engaging opportunity to empower trainers with the skills and confidence. The concrete hands-on approach will strengthen the skills and ownership approach towards the participants which will help us growing as a developed nation. Our specialized training helps individuals prepare for community training by enhancing their capacity to function effectively as an individual. Our programme is built upon the values and principles of cultural competence and encourages trainers to ensure they integrate those practices throughout the planning, preparation, implementation and evaluation of the training to others. 6 The programme focuses on the sustainable concept of Cleaner Production a pollution prevention approach rather than the treatment of waste at the end-of-pipe, showcasing case studies of successful implementation of Cleaner Production in various industrial sectors of Gujarat including its benefits environmentally and socially. It aims on new research and innovations in the field of Cleaner Production and Clean Technologies by discussing the tools, methodologies and financial assistance schemes provided by the state government on implementation of Cleaner Production and Clean Technology measures. The programme will help changing the attitudes and mindsets towards waste as it provides knowledge on how waste can be used as a resource through industrial symbiosis. This programme offers a systematic and integrated approach to managing the use of natural resources such as energy and water including other environmental and financial resources, eliminating or minimizing waste and emissions to the environment, on a sustainable and cost-effective basis. Enhancing the means to meet human needs while respecting the ecological carrying capacity of the earth by producing more well-being with less material consumption. The programme focuses on resource conservation, waste minimization, pollution prevention and will also discuss the concept of waste re-use and recycling, industrial symbiosis, and exchange of waste. The programme will lead you towards Green Thinking and will help you in motivating towards resource conservation at your surroundings. 5
