11 The European Regulatory Framework Challenges for the Cruise Industry (AIDA) EU Water Frame Directive No wash water discharge by scrubbers in European waters interpreted by some member states EU Sulphur Directive Each member state has its own enforcement & verifying of compliance (no harmonized implementation of directive yet) Framework differences: Mediterranean vs. Baltic & North sea (ECA) HELCOM Stricter waste water limit values for discharge 2019 (new builds) & 2021 (existing ships) Needed: Adequate waste water capacities in ports or onboard treatment systems LNG (Regulations & Infrastructure) Inconsistent regulation for LNG usage in ports to be harmonized (Needed:) Adequate infrastructure for LNG supply 10
