1 Information Day on the protection program of Oued Meliane valley aquifer from all sources of pollution RECPnet Newsletter Tunisia Algeria Morocco Lebanon Egypt Jordan 07 march 2016, Tunis A 100 million dinars (MD) Budget, was mobilized for the cleanup and development of Oued Meliane valley watershed, as part of a 5 years redevelopment program, said the Minister of environment and sustainable development Mr. Nejib Derouiche. During an information day devoted to the consideration of the pact of environmental protection and sustainable development of Oued Meliane watershed, the minister said that about 25 MD have been allocated for the realization of the first phase of the program scheduled to start in July The program involves the connection to new sanitation networks of industrial zones of Ben Arous and those of Jebel El Oust 1 and 2, besides the redevelopment of 11 sanitation stations under industrial areas that discharge water into the Oued Meliane basin. The objective is to stop the industrial pollution sources through the identification of industrial water management facilities, connection to the public sewer system and the establishment of an industrial plant that will treat the industrial water. The environmental protection and the sustainable development of Oued Meliane water basin pact, which was signed on 15 December 2015, aims to identify urgent interventions and contributions of stakeholders to improve the environmental situation in the area after a thorough diagnosis and identification of various sources of pollution Elaboration: Arab Regional Administrator CITET Read more : 1

3 Participation of CITET at the National Forum of Associations and Environmental Citizenship 23 april 2016, Congress Palace Tunis CITET took part in the national forum of associations and environmental citizenship organized by the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, on 23rd of April 2016 at the Congress Palace of Tunis. This forum was attended by a variety of environmental organizations, representatives of various organizations under the Supervision of the ministry, media and Tunisian artists. and encourage the culture of citizenship and cleanliness. Promoting participatory approach to environmental protection and cleanliness of the country is the most important point that emerged from this forum. In his speech, Nejib Derouiche, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development focused on the need to work in partnership and in close cooperation with municipalities, civil society and NGOs to implement the national program of cleanliness Open Day on "Access to environmental information" in CITET Development in collaboration with agencies under its supervision, an open Day with the theme: " Access to information and fundamental freedoms, that is your right " 3 May 2016 at its head office. 4 The celebration of World Water Day from 22 to 24 march 2016 World Water Day 2016 was celebrated from March 22 to 24 at the El Harrach Water intake under the theme Water and Employment. The Minister of Water Resources and Environment, Mr. Abdelouahab NOURI officially opened this event in the presence of other members of the government. The talks focused on the cooperation between the two countries on environment and sustainable development in the perspective of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The meeting also focused on preparations for COP 22 and the participation of the Palestinian delegation to this conference. The Minister and the Ambassador discussed the issue of the resolution on the implementation of a field mission to assess the impact on the 2012 wars of the environment and 2014 on the Gaza Strip. A resolution was submitted by Morocco on behalf of the Arab countries at the preparatory meeting to the 2nd UN General Assembly for the Environment (ANUE2), in February 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya. Finally, the two sides agreed to schedule visits of Palestinian experts to Morocco to participate in capacity building workshops and to network in order to prepare the draft MoU to be signed on the occasion of the COP22 in Marrakech in November Read more : 4

Read more : 21 march 2016 NNA - Ministers of Industry and Environment, Hussein Hajj Hassan and Mohammad Machnouk, patronized on Monday the launching of the "sustainable production and consumption plan of the industrial sector in Lebanon," in presence of the representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as well as industrial and environmental experts. The UN official thanked both ministers for their efforts and success in developing the industrial sector's plan for consumption and sustainable production. He also thanked the European Union for funding the plan. In his word delivered on the occasion, Hajj Hassan said that "human activities are becoming huge insofar as it became difficult to preserve the environment and natural resources worldwide. The Minister tackled the trash crisis in Lebanon, criticizing the time spent over tenders and outbids instead of adopting solutions. In his words, sorting of trash was part of the solution but not the final solution. He said that trash incinerators were adopted in several countries, questioning the rejection of such solutions in Lebanon. For his part, Minister of Environment said that the sorting of trash should begin, but must be followed by processing and recycling of trash "We need to educate citizens about the ecological culture," he added, noting that the industry sector has to provide an example to follow, in accordance with the concept of sustainable development Read more : 5

7 Workshop on Sustainable use of ecosystem services in Jordan 22 march 2016 The Ministry of Environment held a workshop entitled "sustainable use of ecosystem services in Jordan," which is within the project of sustainable use of ecosystem services in Jordan, that is implemented by the Ministry between 2014 and 2019 in collaboration with the (GIZ activities) and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The Minister of Environment Dr. Taher Shakhshir who sponsored the launch ceremony in the presence of HRH Princess Basma as the president of the National Committee of the diversity, affirmed that human takes a variety of benefits countless of nature, whether directly or indirectly, from all available ecosystems patterns him on this planet. But the unsustainable use of these resources in addition to the increasing pressures of climate change causes degradation of ecosystems services, which seriously threatens the living conditions and well-being of present and future generations The project aims to strengthen the capacities of decision-makers on biodiversity and ecosystem services assessment and access to a national policy leading to ensure the sustainability of resources and control the decisions regarding their use. It also works on the inclusion of the environmental impact on the parliament's agenda investment projects in order to take environmental systems and related services into account in the discussions relating to the approval of such projects. The project also developed a set of field case studies in the areas of sustainable tourism and pasture management based on the best national and international practices in the field of sustainable use of ecosystems and their services so as to include the results of these initiatives in the documents to be developed about national policies. It also works to create a national network of research and in the field of ecosystem services for the exchange of information and decision support for projects with environmental impact The conclusion of the meetings about the negotiating committee for Minamata mercury convention 16 march 2016 Meetings of the seventh session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for Minamata Convention on mercury have been concluded on March 16, 2016 at the Congress Palace at the Dead Sea. These meeting were launched under the patronage of the Kingdom and lasted five days with the participation of 620 participants from 185 countries and more than 50 international organizations and civil society. He pointed out that standards for the executive action plan are put on the national level to reduce or limit emissions of mercury, and develop a roadmap for evaluating effectiveness and mechanisms to prepare implementation of the Convention reports and benefit from the experiences of agreements like Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam. 8 Two training workshops in the project "National plan for green growth in Jordan 13 march 2016 The Ministry of Environment and the Global Green Growth Institute organized two training workshops entitled " Ratification session - basic output of development projects that have been adopted in the plan analysis", and Ratification session - core outputs of the road map, with the participation of 35 people, representatives of government agencies particularly concerned ministries and private organizations, donors, projects and national programs, and experts in the relevant fields. Ratification covered the core outputs of the road map and the results of development projects that have been adopted in the National Plan to constitute analysis in addition to the basic components of the practical training program for cadres training aimed at an integrated project-related ministries. The Minister of Environment, Dr. Taher Shakhshir, said that the project aims to enable them to work effectively on the relevant green growth projects to achieve economic growth, social welfare, and conservation of natural resources, environmental sustainability and the fight against poverty Workshop on "the ratification of the document and the national plan for green 28 april 2016 Environment Minister Dr Tahir Shakhshir stressed the importance of the national plan for green growth in Jordan in protecting the environment, fighting poverty, and drawing economic policies and making decisions about providing a sustainable investment opportunities. He stressed during a workshop "to validate and document the national plan for green growth", held on Thursday, in cooperation with the Global Green Growth Institute, the importance of exchanging views and experiences to reach the final wording of the national plan for green growth, that will contribute to achieving the desired sustainable development in the light of exacerbate poverty and high illiteracy rates and the problems of growing populations and high unemployment, and limited natural resources, and increasing the impact of the financial and economic crisis and prices of food and energy worldwide to Jordan and neighboring countries. He called to work as one team to face all the challenges by adopting innovative approaches and solutions to ensure sustainable development, increasing national strength of to achieve development and social welfare, which will ensure the achievement of international commitments in the field of sustainable development and climate change. This workshop included representatives of the various stakeholders involved in the final approval of the document of the national plan for green growth that had been prepared by the International Institute of experts Green Growth According to the agreement signed between the Ministry of Environment and the International Institute in January 2015 and includes green growth plan to develop a comprehensive set of policies Read more : 8

9 An international workshop on water 24 april 2016 The Minister of the Environment, Dr. Taher Shakhshir, took part to the workshop in conjunction with the signing of the Paris Convention ceremony on climate change, under the title "Building more adaptable future through water and connecting the 2030 agenda with the Paris Convention," This workshop was organized by the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations, the Institute global Stockholm water in partnership with a coalition of adaptable World water Foundation Rock Feller. He explained the importance of the water sector in sustainable development, touching the most important challenges facing Jordan in relation to the water sector, and the implications of this problem at the level of Jordan and the region. He noted the effective steps taken by the government to mitigate the consequences of the problem of the scarcity of water, indicating the depth of the strategic framework for the water sector He called for the adoption of the principles of gradual transition towards a green economy, to achieve the indicators and the requirements of sustainable development through green growth plan drafted by the Ministry of Environment through the unity of the green economy that have been developed recently, to oversee the pop of the plan projects, as the green economy of the key tools to achieve goals sustainable development.
