2 WELCOME TO BERGEN HOG Energi has the great pleasure on behalf of the Baltic Biogas Bus project, to wish authorities from government, business representatives, project partners and conference participants a warm welcome to our beautiful city. Bergen is a dynamic international city packed with history and tradition, a city with charm, spirit and great atmosphere. As a European City of Culture and World Heritage City, Bergen offers worldclass experiences and culture. The city is also known as The Gateway to the fjords of, being the gate to majestic landscapes, providing a unique blend of nature, culture and urban life. The Baltic Biogas Bus Project runs for 3 years and will end in It has proven that biogas buses are the natural choice for urban public transport to lower emissions and improve inner city air quality while creating energy autonomy, new business opportunities and employment. Biogas is renewable, effective and also economically feasible to implement in city buses. The use of biogas buses has become a success in many cities and much has been learned during the past years. Now we want to share that knowledge and inspire other cities to also set out a route for introducing biogas buses. We hope you will find motivation and knowledge that will help you in the quest to a sustainable and renewable future in your cities. We wish you a good stay in Bergen and a great conference. 3 THE BALTIC BIOGAS BUS PROJECT The Baltic Biogas Bus project is a project partly funded by the EU which seeks to encourage cities and regions around the Baltic Sea to use biogas as a fuel for public transport. The Baltic Biogas Bus project part of the Baltic Sea Region programme has 12 partners from eight different countries and runs from 2009 to PROJECT PARTNERS More information at
4 BIOGAS THE NATURAL CHOICE FOR CITY BUSES Biogas is the cleanest commercially available fuel. Biogas has been in practical use as a vehicle fuel for many years. Extended use of biogas for city buses will lower emissions, improve inner city air quality and strengthen the role of public transport in an efficient strategy to limit the impact from traffic on climate change. Renewable and efficient Biogas is a completely renewable energy source and ideal for buses in urban traffic from a climate point of view. The biogas also contributes towards cleaner air in cities thanks to very low emissions of particles and nitrogen oxide. A common argument is that biogas is good for heating and electricity production but the fact is that biogas is very suitable for use as a vehicle fuel. Natural and locally produced Biogas is 100 percent renewable and part of the natural ecocycle. It is based on household waste, sewage and agricultural waste partly converted to gas at local biogas plants. The gas runs in pipelines, or is distributed by tanker, to the bus depot. The final event in Bergen will present findings and recommendations in the EU-project Baltic Biogas Bus to stakeholders. Findings cover production of biogas, the possibilities to run buses on biogas, the environmental benefits, the technical solutions, the economics and the measures needed to succesfully overcome challenges to implement biogas as fuel in city buses. Production and use of biogas is characterized by a range of issues across different sectors. The chain of stakeholders involved in the process from raw material to end-user is a complex landscape that is imperative to simplify in order to unleash the environmental potential that biogas can represent as a fuel in buses. It is widely acknowledged that biogas has a significant potential as fuel but todays barriers for implementation can be lowered in order to bring theoretical potential to practical potential. Our project recognizes biogas as a natural choice for city buses, and findings show evidence that biogas is a highly viable option that more cities should explore.
5 Under the title of Biogas The natural choice for city buses, the final event in Bergen introduces a program featuring four sessions: Session 1: Environmental Policy Session 2: Resources, Production & Infrastructure Session 3: Use in Buses Session 4: Looking at the future: results and achievements The sessions are put into the context of the strategies, policies, instruments and the economics that will make biogas a reality in the transport sector for the future. The event culminates with a handover ceremony of project results to the EU-commission and a round table disscussion with project partners, NGOs and representatives from politics and industry. Target groups for this conference are politicians, transport representatives dealing with transport and environmental issues on local, regional, national and EU level, as well as companies across the biogas and bus manufacturing value chain.
