Energy Biomass Utilisation New Trends & Technologies in Germany Daniel Hölder Member of the Board, German BioEnergy Association (BBE) Director Energy Policy, Clean Energy Sourcing GmbH, Germany
Content Introduction Bioenergy Market Development in Germany Solid Biomass: Technologies & Trends Future Role of Bioenergy
German BioEnergy Association (BBE) The German BioEnergy Association BBE is the umbrella association of the German bioenergy market and was founded in 1998 to bundle the different sectors and initiatives of the bioenergy market to speak with one voice. Members: 25 specialised associations 150 companies 8 universities and R&D institutions
Clean Energy Sourcing Clean Energy Sourcing is one of the leading suppliers of green electricity for business customers Power supply approx GWh/yr i.e. market share of 17 % in green power supply for business customers Green power supply at market prices Well known customers of all business sectors as references Service provider for market access for operators of renewable energy plants
Content Introduction Bioenergy Market Development in Germany Solid Biomass: Technologies & Trends Future Role of Bioenergy
Bioenergy Power Generation 2010: 60 % Biogas Bioenergy power plants (2010) bioenergy plants 3.8 GW installed capacity 25.7 TWh power generation 22 TWh CHP heat production Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) w/o landfill/sewage gas & biogenic share of waste
Bioenergy Power Generation: Tenfold Increase in 10 Years EEG 2009 EEG 2004 EEG 2000 Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ)
Small Wood Boilers are Dominating Heat production Bioenergy heat production % small wood boilers
Bioenergy Heat Supply: Market Doubled in 10 Years
Content Introduction Bioenergy Market Development in Germany Solid Biomass: Technologies & Trends Future Role of Bioenergy
Solid Biomass Power Generation (2010) Solid biomass power plants (2010) 249 bioenergy plants MWe installed capacity 8.3 TWh power generation 14.1 TWh CHP heat production 7.6 M ton/yr fuel consumption (absolutely dry) Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) w/o mini plants < 10 kwe
The Trend goes to Medium Sized Plants with CHP Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) w/o pulp & paper, carburettors, and mini CHP < 10 kwe
Used Wood Dominates Solid Biomass Power Generation (abs. dry) Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ)
Combustion Technologies: More than 50 % Grade Firing Grade firing is dominating technology Grate firing plants often have higher heat extraction than fluidized bed firing plants Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) w/o pulp & paper, carburettors, and mini CHP < 10 kw
Steam Turbines & Organic Rankine Cycle Turbines (existing) (growth) (existing) (growth) Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ)
Installed Technologies Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ)
Continuing Interest for Gasification Plants There is a considerable number of wood gasification plants and technology providers in Germany Most of the plants operate between 10 kwe and kwe with an average capacity of: 80 kwe A good portion of the plants do not operate steadily, but a few seem to have achieved the breakthrough Ref: German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ)
Content Introduction Bioenergy Market Development in Germany Solid Biomass: Technologies & Trends Future Role of Bioenergy
After Fukushima Germany decided the Energy Turnaround Broad consensus in society for Nuclear power exit until 2022 Accelerated development of renewable energy sources Significant escalation of energy efficiency Year RES power 3 % 20 % 35 % 50 %
The new Role of Bioenergy in the Future Energy Supply The major part of the RES power plants will be wind & solar, which are intermittent depending on weather and daytime Therefore base-load is not longer needed, but flexibility of conventional as well as non intermittent RES power plants To produce energy on demand will be a paradigm change for bioenergy: quality instead of quantity Technical challenges: plant lay-out, storage technologies, biogas grid injection Organisational challenges: transformation of the energy (power) market Consequently new instruments for market & system integration have been in the focus of the EEG revision
Conclusions Bioenergy represents 1/3 of the RES power generation and > 90 % of the RES heat supply Solid biomass represents 1/3 of the bioenergy power generation and 80 % of the bioenergy heat supply Market growth of solid biomass slowed down significantly and fell short of biogas due to political conditions and fuel shortage for bigger plants Even if combustion technologies with steam turbines are still dominating in power generation, ORC turbines became more important in the last 5 years, and gasifiers are still under development The share of bioenergy in the energy supply will decrease with increasing share of RES, but the importance will increase (balancing of fluctuation production of wind & solar)
