4 Geothermal Heating & Cooling Geothermal -- Heat from the earth Operates at normal earth temperatures Earth absorbs 47% of the sun s energy that reaches it Available everywhere In our area not associated with geysers Stored Renewable Solar Energy Source The earth can absorb nearly half of the sun s energy. The ground stays a relatively constant temperature through the seasons, able to absorb the rejected heat in summer and release this heat stored back in the winter. 4

5 Geothermal systems move heat The heat is not created by the heat pump, it is simply moved and concentrated. The Physics of heating. Heat always moves from warm to cold The Question I always get. How does 50 degree ground heat my house? Heat Energy is Transferred Through the Earth Loop When hot or cold liquid is pumped through the pipe, it s heat energy is transferred to the earth around it 5
