MISSION OF CHP/DHC WG WITHIN BUILDING AND INDUSTRIAL EFFICIENCY (GSEP) CHP/DHC WG will increase awareness about the vast potential of CHP and Efficient DHC to: Reduce fuel consumption Reduce

9 MISSION OF CHP/DHC WG WITHIN BUILDING AND INDUSTRIAL EFFICIENCY (GSEP) CHP/DHC WG will increase awareness about the vast potential of CHP and Efficient DHC to: Reduce fuel consumption Reduce emissions of greenhouse gases Reduce emission of other air pollutants harmful to the environment and human health e.g. black-carbon Increase the use of renewable resources for heat and power production Reduce dependence on energy imported from other regions or countries Increase economic competitiveness and generate employment. Presently CHP generates 10 per cent of all electricity, resulting in energy savings of more than 5 EJ annually. According to IEA, CHP is estimated to be able to reduce 10 % of CO 2 emissions (950 Mt/year) by

10 STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES Efficiency of CHP to reduce emissions and use of fuels is very often underestimated. Consequently, the objective of the CHP Working Group is to increase awareness of the potential of CHP and DHC (District Heating and Cooling) by Identifying existing barriers to increase CHP/DHC Introduction of enabling policies to overcome barriers Sharing best practices for promoting CHP and DHC adoption in public and private sectors 10

11 PARTICIPATION IN CHP/DHC WG The activities of the last years have been carried out according to the working plan of WG. Participation includes governments: Finland, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, USA, EU Commission other organisations: International Energy Agency (IEA), Euroheat & Power, International District Heating Association (IDEA) private sector several companies from different countries. Especially, creation the partnership with IEA CHP/DHC Collaborative has increased and accelerated activities and discussions with a larger group of stakeholders. 11

12 RECENT ACTIVITIES Recent activities include: CHP/DHC country scorecards providing a comprehensive snapshot of utility and industrial CHP applications, as well as integrated approaches of CHP within DHC networks, for Finland, Japan and Korea published by IEA in 2013 Finland has started several bilateral projects to analyse potential of CHP/DHC, for example in India and China in 2013 CHP-DHC WG and IEA CHP-DHC Collaborative had a WS on February 2013 in Paris to coordinate work activities moving forward Identification opportunities and barriers for CHP and DHC in countries at different stages of technology. 13 PLANNED ACTIVITIES Prior to CEM5 in 2014, the goal is to work with the International Energy Agency and other stakeholders to produce 1) More CHP/DHC country scorecards 2) A compendium of comprehensive applied case studies of targeted applications that highlight the role CHP and DHC can play in a lowcarbon energy system, and 3) Key recommendations for the different stakeholders to increase the deployment of these solutions 4) Examine possibilities for pilot and demonstration projects and CHP/DHC investments in bilateral projects Source: Wärtsilä 13

14 ESSENTIAL RESULTS WE SHOULD ACHIEVE DURING OUR WS increase co-operation with IEA, other organisations and stakeholders as well as other CEM activities, eg. Sustainable Cities and 21st Century Power Partnership to highlight possibilities of CHP/DHC to reduce energy consumption and emissions in decentralized, urban and industrial energy systems, and with integration of intermittent renewable energy production. define and discuss about activities of the WP for next 2-3 years learn from each other when sharing information 14
