WRO Workshop, Sun City, Safety and sustainability of rendered products Dr. Martin Alm European Fat Processors and Renderers Association WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 1/24 April 2013 Overview Safety first - Three steps of safety - Virtual tour Sustainability - Background - Carbon Foot Print - Phosphorus Conclusions WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 2/24 April

Safety first Three step approach Safe Source Safe Treatment Safe Use Traceability Transparency One Step is in general sufficient! WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 3/24 April 2013 Safe Source Animal by-products (ABP) are mainly slaughter by-products (SBP) from healthy slaughtered animals Moreover, most of these SBP are fit for human consumption ABP are therefore not per se hazardous Because raw ABP are wet, nutrient rich and highly digestible, improper handling can increase microbiological risks Collection without undue delay in clean, disinfected trucks and containers by educated personal reduce this risk WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 4/24 April

Safe Treatment Key purpose of rendering is sterilisation and stabilisation by thermal dehydration - Either by acknowledged methods (e.g. EU approved 6 methods) - Individually approved treatments guaranteeing the microbiological safety (e.g. absence of certain indicator organisms like salmonella) All classical pathogens can be killed by application of heat over time. All processes, from collection to dispatch, are supervised following HACCP criteria A WRO-HACCP-Guideline is currently under construction; it should harmonise the experience in this field WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 5/24 April 2013 Safe Use If the use as such is safe, like an incineration, both steps before are unimportant But for sensitive applications like the use in feed safe sourcing and safe treatment are essential and thus obligatory WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 6/24 April

Processing Raw material Breaker <50mm Sterilisation Dryer Condensation Waste water treatment Press Mill Meal Fat Decanter / centrifuge Fat WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 7/24 April 2013 Reception of raw material / hoppers WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 8/24 April

Breaker WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 9/24 April 2013 Sterilisation WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 10/24 April

Sustainability Wikipedia writes, it is the capacity to endure. The Brundtland Commission of the United Nations stated on March 20, 1987: sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. At the 2005 World Summit on Social Development it was noted that this requires the reconciliation of environmental, social equity and economic demands the "three pillars" of sustainability. WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 15/24 April 2013 Sustainability the European Commission recognises 14 default categories: - Climate change - Ozone depletion - Human toxicity, cancer effects - Human toxicity, non-cancer effects - Particulate matter/respiratory inorganics - Ionising radiation, (human health) - Photochemical ozone formation - Acidification - Eutrophication, terrestrial - Eutrophication, aquatic - Ecotoxicity, freshwater aquatic - Land use - Resource depletion, water - Resource depletion, mineral, fossil and Renewable WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 16/24 April

Climate change Regarding climate change the calculation of the Carbon Foot Print has been developped as the key parameter meaning: - The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) - Usually a carbon footprint is calculated for the time period of a year or expressed in a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) - Thus it is the measure of the environmental impact of a particular individual or product or organisation or operation. WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 17/24 April 2013 Carbon Foot Print (CFP) The CFP calculation of animals include emissions from food production, manure production and use, housing, slaughtering etc. After the slaughtering the meat, co-products like leather or gelatine bones and by-products are allocated economically The Dutch companies VION and SONAC calculate the following CFP for animal fat and meals WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 18/24 April

CFP of animal fats and vegetable oils LULUC emissions of vegetable oils LULUC emissions of animal fats Carbon footprint of vegetable oils Carbon footprint of animal fats Food grade fat Cat 3 poultry fat Cat 3 mixed fat Soybean oil Palm oil Rapeseed oil Source: Hans Blonk, EFPRA Congress 2010 Carbon footprint (kg CO2eq per tonne) WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 19/24 April 2013 CFP of animal and vegetable meals LULUC emissions vegetable meals Carbon footprint vegetable meals LULUC emissions cat 3 poultry meal Carbon footprint cat 3 poultry meal Cat 3 poultry meal Cat 3 mixed meal Soybean meal Palm kernel meal Rapeseed meal Source: Hans Blonk, EFPRA Congress 2010 Carbon footprint (kg CO 2eq per kg protein) WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 20/24 April

Phosphorus - as important as air, as scarce as oil? 0,1 % in the lithosphere (Earth s crust) mainly as phosphate Available for years only but safe sources? Often contaminated with Cadmium and Uranium 85 % of the Phosphorus in animals are deposited in non edible parts (Kamphues 2009) PAP can substitute 10% of a yearly production South Africa 12% Others 15% Cordell, Drangert and White, 2009 USA 8% China 8% Jordan Brasil 7% 3% Marocco 47% Source: Die Zeit 2005 WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 21/24 April 2013 P-availability of different feed ingredients for pigs Source: Kamphues 2009 WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 22/24 April

Conclusions To use ABP for the production of feed grade proteins and fats, the rendering process is the key element for safety Rendering guarantees sanitation and stabilisation of the products HACCP is a common tool for renderers worldwide to control the high performance, it includes training and education programmes Rendered products are not only an energy and nutrient rich, but also a highly sustainable feed ingredient Meals supply besides proteins also fully digestible phosphate Rendered products are safe and sustainable! WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 23/24 April 2013 Animal By-products should go Back to Nature only via Rendering WRO Workshop, GFFC, Sun City, / Dr. Martin Alm Folie 24/24 April
