itesla workshop 22 of August Slide show lia Workshop itesla Paris, 22 of August Grégory Meys
lia : Who are we? Belgium high voltage transmission system operator (30kV to 380kV) Operating over 8000 km of lines and underground cables Pivotal location in urope key player in the nergy market and the interconnected uropean electricity system mploys more than 1100 professionals 2
lia : Who is participating in itesla? Department from lia participating in itesla : National Control Center (NCC) Operational national dispatching (from 220kV till 380kV lines and cables) In lia, NCC is in particular responsible for the adequacy of the system, for the network calculations, for the interconnections with border countries, for network stability, Those domains are covered from a year-ahead horizon until real time (with year ahead, monthly, weekly analysis and in particular D-2, D-1 and intraday calculations, ) 3
lia : What are our future major infrastructure projects? Current interconnections: 2 with France 2 with Netherlands 1 with Luxembourg Future situation: Reinforcement of current 380kV interconnections Interconnection HVDC B-G Belgium offshore grid HVDC connection UK SOURC : ANUAL RPORT 4
lia : What are our future challenges? Rising the interconnection capacity of lia (with reinforcement and new projects) Makes the nergy market more efficient Makes the security of supply in urope more reliable Manage the growing of renewables production 13% foreseen for 2020 Same challenge and growing foreseen in the uropean countries Current wind energy and wind energy scenarii for 2020 Country 2013 actual installations Central 2020 scenario Belgium MW MW France MW MW Germany MW MW Netherlands MW MW urope (U28) MW MW The result of this combination includes more and more uncertainties into the establishment of our network calculations hypothesis. SOURC : WA 5
lia : Which kind of uncertainties? Manage the growing of renewables production Forecasting errors (9/08/2014) 6 X P C T D A C T U A L X P C T D A C T U A L W I N D S O L A R SOURC : X TRANSPARNCY
lia : Which kind of impact? Rising the interconnection capacity of lia with reinforcement and new projects This statistic study is based on a three year analysis of XB flows data (source : Vulcanus ). The study gives an average impact of a net position change on the Belgium s loopflow. Flow impact FR>B B>NL Belgium France Netherlands Germany SOURC : VULCANUS For example, if there is a change of +10 MW in the net position of France and the same inversed delta change in the net position of Germany, the impact on the loopflow on the Belgium network will be 10X [(+) (-) ] The impact on the Belgiuw loopflow on the FR>B - B>NL direction will be MW 7
lia : How could help the itesla toolbox? Forecasting errors in Belgium or in the other countries in urope could have an important impact on the loop flows on our grid. specially for renewables production, the difficulties into the forecasting give uncertainities into the network calculations, in particular between D-2, DA, ID and RT situations. In this domain, the itesla toolbox would be a very useful tool in oder to manage the uncertaintinities in our network calculations on an pan-european level. 8
