11 Energy Studies Gateway Course APHY 100 Energy Technology and Society MW 2:30 3:45 pm HLH Instructors: D Prober, M Oristaglio, J Paquette The course is intended for sophomores (Class of 2019) enrolling in the Energy Studies Multidisciplinary Academic Program and for non-science majors with strong background in math and science. This course studies the technology, use, and impacts of energy on the environment, climate, security and economy, and emphasize the application of scientific reasoning and quantitative analysis to understand these impacts. As one of the major requirements for the course, students will be divided into teams to formulate and study energy projects suitable for testing on the Yale campus, and will complete reports and a poster presentation on their proposed projects during Reading Period. The project-based coursework will be done in collaboration with the Yale Office of Facilities and Office of Sustainability. 11

12 Energy Studies Exit Seminar G&G 746 Seminar in Climate & Energy Quantifying Risks and Opportunities of Climate Change W 12:40 2:30 pm KGL 123 This seminar will study the risks and opportunities of climate change from a quantitative perspective. Topics will range from the use of high-resolution regional climate models to better quantify the effects of global warming on local communities, to the global prospects for public and private finance in decarbonizing the world energy systems. We will look at examples from around the world, including: the development of high-resolution regional climate models to assess detailed climate impacts; the pricing of carbon in different ways (the carbon tax in British Columbia, the carbon market in China and the Yale Carbon Charge); the financing and progress of the German Energiewende; and the overall energy investment analysis made by the International Energy Agency (IEA) for its World Energy Outlook Kamel Ben Naceur, Director Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks, International Energy Agency (IEA) Henrik Maatsch, Policy Advisor, Climate and Energy, WWF Germany Matthias Kopp, Head Sustainable Finance, WWF Germany Carol Thomas, Chair, State of Connecticut Investment Advisory Council Sophie Purdom, author of Sustainable Investing: Revolutions in Theory and Practice (2016) Gary Sernovitz, Managing Director, Lime Rock Partners; writer on business, energy and culture for The New Yorker Katharine Mach, Senior Research Scientist, Carnegie Institution for Science, Department of Global Ecology, Stanford Vicky Pope, Head Climate Predictions Program, UK Met Office Chris Ragan, Chair, Canada s Ecofiscal Commission Casey Pickett, Director Yale Carbon Charge 12

13 Carbon Charge Section G&G 746 Seminar in Climate & Energy Quantifying Risks and Opportunities of Climate Change In a special section of the Seminar in Climate & Energy, a group of Energy Studies juniors will be working with Casey Pickett (Director of the Yale Carbon Charge) during the spring term on a collection of projects related to the introduction of a carbon charge at Yale in July of this year. With the Carbon Charge program, the University aims to Incorporate the societal costs of climate change into university investment decisions Be a living laboratory to engage the campus community in research on carbon pricing Develop lessons for the world on best practices for putting a price on carbon emissions. How to communicate the reasons and goals of the program effectively? What should a carbon charge bill look like? What kinds of energy interventions will help improve the carbon footprint of individual buildings? 13

14 Other Activities Tours of the Yale power plants (tied in with the gateway course, open to all) Energy tours of Yale buildings (tied in with the gateway course, open to all) Fossil Fuels field trip to coal, oil and shale-gas sites in PA (Mar 13-14, tent.)
