Curitiba Santa Felicidade Typical European neighborhood: Center of gastronomy Production of cheeses, salami, wine Production of beer Churrasco: A typical Brazilian Square of Japan

The express bus system, a not expensive solution to urban transportation, and it is now adopted in over 100 cities around the world.

Sustainable city Reuse resources, finding new ways to spend less energy and knowing how to use without waste (water, electricity, and other materials).

Investigating Curitiba and its Waste Management practices Waste policies and legislation Exposing the social attitudes to waste Waste prevention methods and best practices

1 Curitiba's waste policies and legislation Waste streams from residential, commercial and industrial users in an effort to create an effective solid waste recycling program. The household waste can be further broken down into the following components: Organic Waste; Waste Recycling; Waste Plants; Waste of Health Services; Wastes of Construction; Hazardous Waste. Yard Waste Curitiba has an integrated solid waste

Environmental education in schools Selective collection created technical conditions for the implementation of a recycling plant and composting in the city.

Description This initiative began in 1989, the "Garbage That Is Not Garbage", started with an environmental education in schools. A booklet was distributed to the population and began collecting household and supermarkets, where recyclables are exchanged for vouchers purchased.

Education eco-design, implementing prevention especially starting with our young, is the only way to success in heading towards zero waste.

2 Exposing the social attitudes towards the waste The Green Exchange Program was established in 1991 and is the exchange of waste horticultural products for recycling at the time. Currently there are 78 exchange points, where each month are benefiting some 7,000 people and distributed approximately 44 tons of food.

"Waste that is not Garbage Program The recyclable waste is collected by 23 trucks. Aims increase the separation of recyclable waste at source, in order to reduce the material destined for the landfill and increase recycling rates.

3 Waste prevention methods and best practices The Green Exchange Program It is the exchange recyclable waste for horticulture. The exchange is made on a fortnightly service units deployed in the city of Curitiba, according to annual schedule established by the Municipal Environment.

Collection Program Household Special Waste (Hazardous Waste) Special collection 24 bus terminals. in Cooking oils: it is transformed into soap, detergent and raw material for making other products.

As a result 45,125 tons of garbage. This amount of recycled material represents a savings of 195,252,646 liters of water that would be used if tons of new material had to be produced.

Recycling one ton of paper saves 29,202 liters of water Recycling returns to the productive cycle, saving precious environmental resources for living beings, water, minerals and energy. Recycling paper saves trees. Every 50 pounds of recycled paper avoids the cutting of a tree. The 4,513 tons of paper sent by the Exchange for the Green Recycling prevented the cutting of 90,263 trees.

Estimates Estimates of the quantity of solid waste generated and its origins are important factors in developing an effective solid waste management plan. In order to obtain accurate estimates for the quantity and source of solid waste for particular municipalities, a study of all private and municipal haulers and area landfills is necessary.

Management tool Using sources of information including state regulatory agencies, previous solid waste plans, the individual municipalities and local waste haulers. These estimates are critical for developing a solid waste management plan.

Leftovers Why businesses should turn their food waste into compost Companies large and small can do more to ensure that leftovers from restaurants and catered events don't end up as landfill.
