1 Newsletter Dezember 2017 Scaling up solutions bringing in partners, building out networks: as 2017 draws to a close, we would like to share stories of growth and expansion into new fields of endeavor. Whether it's FSM at high altitude, sanitation in arid regions and remote areas, country-wide DEWATS replication, or management of urban waters, it's BORDA's cross-sectoral relationships at global, national, regional and local level that make it all happen. As work in the field goes into ever more challenging areas, BORDA is also engaging the young people who will bring about the next generation of solutions. BORDA at the 13th Conference of Youth: Strengthening young people's capabilities and raising awareness of the linkages between climate change and water-related issues From the 3rd to the 5th of November around 1600 young climate activists and UN Youth Delegates from 114 countries met in Bonn for COY13, the 13th international Conference of Youth on climate change themes. The COY is an official event of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) youth constituency and takes place every year just before the annual UN Climate Change Conference, also known as the Conference of Parties (COP). This year, COP23 took place in Bonn, Germany under the Presidency of Fiji. With the Fiji-inspired slogan Talanoa Mada - Youth Accelerating Climate Action, COY13 focused on capacity building and policy training in preparation for upcoming climate negotiations, the facilitation of knowledge sharing and the building and enhancing of youth networks and movements. page 1 of 7

2 BORDA, in cooperation with Bremen-based NGO Jep-Junges entwicklungspolitisches Forum (Youth Forum for Development Politics), contributed to the diverse COY13 programme by hosting a workshop to raise greater awareness of the too-often ignored links between water and climate in international climate summits. Since the relationship between water and climate varies from place to place, the participants were asked to share their own perspectives on these questions: What are the most important connections between water and climate in your home country? What are the most urgent issues and how can young people become more involved in dealing with these problems and finding solutions? How can young people around the globe become more involved in the water and climate sector? As climate change becomes an ever bigger threat, it is ever more vital to strengthen the capabilities and foster the knowledge of young people around the globe. Events like COY therefore play an essential role in moving our world towards a sustainable future. BORDA will continue to make active contributions in this sphere: engaging, motivating, supporting and enabling young people to take productive action on water-related issues in their own communities. Meet BORDA at the 19th International Congress and Exhibition of the African Water Association in Bamako, Mali, February 2018 The congress is entitled Accelerating access to sanitation and water services in the face of the challenges of climate change. It will connect professionals from the water and sanitation sector, technical and financial partners, members of the academic community and civil society. More information page 2 of 7

4 Program launch: Innovative Sanitation Solutions and Reuse in Arid Regions (ISSRAR) The SDC-funded ISSRAR project, with BORDA as a partner in the implementing consortium, officially launched in Jordan on 01 November In line with Jordan s national water strategy, the project aims to ensure and promote safe reuse of treated wastewater and biosolids, and in the process turn waste streams into resource streams. 5 3rd stakeholder workshop for UNEP/UN-Habitat project: developing guidelines and standards for decentralised wastewater management systems The September workshop, hosted by BORDA Africa, gave participants the opportunity to consider findings from multiple installations in Tanzania, and to review and respond to the first draft of the guidelines. This engagement with a broad range of stakeholders brings us a step closer to realising scaled-up solutions. Read more page 5 of 7

6 From Devanahalli to Leh, India: BORDA brings faecal sludge management (FSM) to a high and dry Himalayan town The Bremen-based international company HANSA-FLEX has selected the Leh FSM project for their Christmas donor initiative. At an altitude of 12,000 feet, the city of Leh in the Indian region of Ladakh is one of the highest in the world and has one of the harshest climates. The new FSM system, implemented via an innovative public-private partnership, shows that successful FSM is possible even in very challenging conditions. Read more page 6 of 7

7 BORDA supports the establishment of the city alliance People-Sanitation-Cities to promote sustainable management of urban waters The October 2017 City Forum on Integrated Sanitation, conducted by BORDA Southeast Asia, brought together multi-level government authorities, expert institutes and local partner organisations for a two-day exchange on integrated sanitation, culminating in the launch of the People-Sanitation-Cities international city partnership.
