Hossain, Sir Harold Walter and Dr P. R. Yanez) The Executive Board, Having considered report of Director-General on WHO'S human health and environment programme,. THANKS Director-General for his report; 2. ENDORSES principles and general approach of proposals; 3. TRANSMITS report toger with comments of Executive Board to Twenty-ninth World Health Assembly;and 4. RECOMMENDS that Twenty-ninth World Health Assembly adopt following resolution: "The Twenty-ninth World Health Assembly, Having considered report of Director-General on WHO,s human health and environment programme;^ Recalling resolutions WHA26.58, WHA27.49, WHA27.50 and WHA28.63; Considering that progress in improving conditions of human environment as y affect health is too slow, and that present efforts by all concerned require intensification ; Emphasizing that improvement of environmental conditions should be seen as part of total health and development effort ; Document EB57/23.

No. 4 page 2 Stressing particular priority to be given to environmental sanitation in developing countries, especially to provision of adequate and safe water supplies and disposal of wastes; Recognizing, however, that all countries must pay increasing attention to prevention of adverse effects on health resulting from conditions in various environments to which man is exposed; Reaffirming priority of health in context of environmental programmes and need for close cooperation in this field f. THANKS Director-General for his report, and endorses approach to future development and implementation of programme; 2. REITERATES that WHO should collaborate with governments in development of ir environmental health services and infrastructures; 3. URGES governments () to make environmental health programmes an integral part of ir national health and development efforts, particular attention being given to most needy sectors of population; and (2) to allocate more adequate resources to environmental health; 4. REQUESTS Director-General : () to plan and implement programme on basis of proposals made in his report and taking into account resolutions WHA26.58, WHA27.49 and WHA27.50; (2) to continue to follow a multidisciplinary approach and to integrate various programme areas into a comprehensive programme, as proposed in his report;

No. 4 page 3 (3) to continue collaboration and coordination within United Nations system and with or intergovernmental and nongovernmental agencies concerned with environmental matters, with a view to: (a) maintaining WHO'S leading role in respect of activities to promote human health, (b) increasing availability of resources in addition to regular budget of Organization; and (c) making Organization s contribution to environmental programmes as effective as possible; (4) to continue to give high priority in implementation of this programme to collaboration with governments; (5) to report to Thirty-first World Health Assembly on impact of implementation of this resolution on work of Organization.
