Introduction Covering the complete water cycle TNAV is a cluster of Belgian technology providers in the area of water treatment, with a strong focus on sustainability and water reuse. The companies presented in the following pages have a lot to offer: an exceptional expertise both at home and abroad - for you to benefit from and covering the whole range of water treatment technologies: from physical-chemical treatment and (an)aerobics, to sand and membrane filtration, and use of activated carbon. For sludge processing, TNAV companies developed drying and incineration techniques of their own. Virtually all companies have extended their operations to cover the complete water cycle, concentrating on process water production and the reuse of the treated wastewater effluent, determining the right water quality for any given application. Some members focus on drinking water production but are also looking into ways to close the water cycle. Flow of technology Actively involved in research programs with engineering and biochemistry departments of leading universities and institutes, the TNAV companies are well-positioned to suggest you a wide range of science-based solutions and the best available technologies to solve your wastewater problem and help you find a sustainable solution for the effluent. To date, there is no appropriate treatment technique dealing with concentrate flows (hampering water reuse, i.e. the closure of the water cycle). This is why, two years ago, the TNAV member companies and representatives of other involved industries and research centers agreed to join forces in order to develop economically sound techniques to further optimize wastewater treatment, to improve water reuse and to deal with the recovery of inorganic salts. This project, called De Blauwe Cirkel ( The Blue Circle ) is sponsored by IWT, the Flanders Agency for Innovation by Science & Technology. The ad hoc alliance around TNAV has a 4 year mandate and is looking actively for ways and means towards the valorization of the inorganic salt flows. The best solution for your problem The TNAV companies are used to work with and for practically any industrial sector. They will treat manure and wastewater from slaughterhouses alike, they are used to treat large volumes of effluent from car plants, from food processing, chemical or textiles factories, from public swimming pools as well as municipal wastewater 6

Flexibility is key and our member companies can deliver turnkey water treatment systems almost anywhere in the world but are also fully prepared to work as subcontractors or to form alliances with local building contractors. The solutions they offer are always tailor-made to suit your or your company s needs. A strongly developed network From the start it has been TNAV s mission to build a strong network. Members, be they technology providers, suppliers, engineering companies or knowledge centers, all contribute and benefit from what we call the flow of technology. They increasingly join common research programs, they work together as problem solvers, they share their new insights and findings in workshops and seminars. And ultimately it is you, the customer and/or industrial partner, who benefits most from this technology flow. 9 Aaqua Waste Water Technology nv Kievitlaan 6 B 2820 Bonheiden (Belgium) Phone: +32 (0) Fax: +32 (0) info@aaqua.com URL: Common sense and technological know how In short Aaqua is a small and dynamic company created more than 15 years ago near Mechelen (northern part of Belgium) with annual sales of EUR 3.5 million: nothing much when compared with multinational companies such as General Electric or Siemens, but the seven highly skilled and experienced engineers of Aaqua are extremely busy and have earned themselves an enviable reputation in the design, engineering and construction of wastewater treatment plants. They also strongly believe that small is beautiful and do not want to grow at all costs. Ceo: Marc Feyten A closer look The Aaqua team may be small, but its constituent members share more than 25 years of experience in all water treatment technologies as well as in the design of the water treatment tools. Being typical technology providers, the Aaqua team very much favours a hands-on approach. If at all possible, they will prefer practical solutions to sophisticated technologies. They want to see, feel, experience on the spot and are not afraid of dirtying their hands. They will discuss at length with the customer to see what his/her real needs are and will go for the best possible solution. Needless to say Aaqua has to work with subcontractors: construction workers, welders, electro-technicians, etc... but the company is the customer s one stop shop and ensures that his water and/or sludge related problem is solved efficiently: The Aaqua -team obviously remains available after delivery. We are doing very well, CEO Marc Feyten says, We feel that there is a growing awareness among our customers as well as our competitors customers that water treatment is a necessity. They also understand that as vast quantities of heat get lost in production processes, the reuse of heat energy from wastewater is a very good idea, both in terms of sustainability and in cost-effectiveness. Now that we touch the topic of sustainability, the Recovery System developed by Aaqua deserves our attention as it has proven to be very successful., (patent pending) recovers the heat from wastewater streams by simple techniques in order to upgrade the wastewater to a sustainable energy source. The thermal energy from the effluent of a sewage treatment is recovered with a combination of heat exchangers and a heat pump. Starting from a low temperature energy (e.g. 23 C), succeeds in producing process water heated to 50 C and this with an unbeatable energy performance: with only 1 kwh of electric consumption produces more than 10 kwh of heat energy. In addition to a long-time experience in wastewater treatment of slaughterhouses, another Aaqua specialty is the wastewater treatment of tank cleaning facilities. 9

A very challenging job, as these are complex types of wastewater, submitted to stringent health and environmental regulations. Even if the company does not want to conquer the market, let alone the world, it is ambitious and eager to come to grips with new problems. Recent challenges were 3 container-based wastewater treatments for tank cleaning facilities in Saudi Arabia. When we ask what Aaqua s Unique Selling Proposition might be, Marc Feyten replies: Driven by our creativity we try to find simple solutions in order to work out the most efficient and affordable treatment for our customers. For us, every single job is a new challenge, just as important as the previous or the next one. The Aaqua team is fully aware that service is vitally important today. Simple software on my PC at home or Ipad, Marc Feyten explains, allows us to monitor all our computer-controlled water treatment facilities, to for example start up or turn off the pumps whenever necessary. In case of emergency one of our team will receive a specific warning SMS on his mobile phone, and can act at once. This long distance service helps us to support our customer in his daily monitoring and optimisation of the waste water treatment. Technologies AAQUA focuses on the following techniques, all of their own design: 1. Mechanical sieves such as screw screens, curved screens, Aaqua -RS rotary screens with internal and external feeding 2. Sedimentation with plate pack 3. Physical-chemical treatment through addition of coagulants and flocculants. 4. Flotation with Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) - The Aaqua -DAF flotation-unit as pre-treatment - The Aaqua -Biosludge-DAF-unit as a separator of activated sludge. This is a compact and a more reliable alternative to the traditional clarifier. 5. Biological treatment with hyperbolic-aeration and fully automated with PLC-controller, SCADA supervision; data-registration of important process variables. 6. Sludge treatment such as mineralization, gravitational dewatering, centrifuge 7. Heat recovery through (cf. above) 8. Blue Tower is a technology converting all the latent heat from dirty waste steam into reusable heat of approx. 95 C. Unique Selling Proposition: We try to keep it simple and at the same time to be creative in order to work out the most efficient and affordable solution for our customers. 11 How the concept can help you to make important savings. An example: A wastewater treatment plant treats 500 m³ of wastewater a day. Purified water is released at an average temperature of 24 C. The calories in the wastewater are efficiently recovered, using heat exchangers and a heat pump. Every day 200 m³ of process water is preheated from 12 C to 40 C On an annual basis (265 days of production) the customer saves 1,725 MWh of energy With 1 kwh of electricity we produce up to 11 kwh of heat: COP (Coefficient of performance) = 11 Compared to a conventional gas boiler this represents a saving of approximately 50,000 In addition, saves normally 4 times more energy than the wastewater treatment plant uses to operate. A reduction of more than 210 tonnes of CO2 a year is achieved (i. e. minus 73%!). This corresponds to getting 100 cars off the road (140 g CO2/km at 15,000 km/year). The water discharges are cooled in summer and your wastewater meets the temperature standards for discharges to surface water. Finally, the pay-back of a complete is usually less than 3 years. 13 BESIX nv Gemeenschappenlaan 100, Avenue des Communautés B-1200 Brussels (Belgium) Phone: +32 (0) Fax: +32 (0) (Brussels) URL: Providing safe drinking water and access to sanitation for everyone is our duty In short As water competence centre of the BESIX Group, BESIX Sanotec is specialized in designing, constructing and commissioning wastewater treatment plants, potable water treatment plants, sludge treatment installations, odour control units, pumping and hydroelectric installations, both for the public and private sector. The BESIX Sanotec offices, located in Brussels and Dubai, closely work together in order to find creative solutions for the growing challenges in the water business. The BESIX Group is the largest Belgian group of companies Frank Scheerlinck, Head of Design and Proposal operating in the construction of apartment and office buildings, infrastructure, environmental projects and roads, facility management, real estate development and concessions. It has gained itself a reputation as a multi-services group, and helps its customers from beginning to end, i.e. to final implementation and operation. The BESIX activities in the water sector through the Sanotec department clearly show that water is part of the Group s core business and that the company offers the full range of services in this area to customers all over the world. A closer look Through Sanotec, BESIX wants to be at the forefront of the water industry, delivering sustainable water solutions across the globe, giving access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation to everyone, ensuring the disposal of safe effluent in the environment. Competences The BESIX Sanotec department has a long experience in wastewater treatment, sludge and odor treatment, drinking water treatment, hydraulic installations (pumping stations, turbines,...) and can offer a complete range of competences, especially: Full process design Hydraulic design of the plant 3D-design of the civil guidelines, piping and plant lay-out (including BOQs) Equipment definition and selection Testing Electric basic design 13

Commissioning and start-up Operation and maintenance The Technical Library and Technical Knowledge Database are managed by the Engineering Department located in Brussels and Dubai. A significant innovation was the integration of BIM (Building Information Model) within the BESIX Sanotec engineering concept. The Integrated Design Approach that has been developed is vital to the successful implementation of challenging Design, Build & Maintenance (DBM) projects and to provide support to public-private partnership projects Unique Selling Proposition: An experienced international company, using the latest technology available on the market to serve the customer. Technologies The Group operates as a general contractor, following market demand and will always make use of the best available technologies on an ad hoc basis, in other words: it will prefer the technologies most suitable for any specific project. BESIX has never developed proprietary water technologies. The process team of BESIX Sanotec looks for new and future-oriented sustainable technologies. Designs are checked by modeling and simulations software (GPSx). Greenhouse gas production (CO2, CH4) is also considered in this model in order to select the most sustainable technology. Design, build, own & operate As part of BESIX, Sanotec not only designs and builds water treatment works for municipalities and industry but can also operate and manage these as concessions. Sanotec offers projects to public authorities including an all-in service, from the design to the maintenance of the finished project with support from private partners. Success story Monaragala & Buttala Integrated Water Supply project in Sri Lanka In April 2014, BESIX won its first assignment in Sri Lanka with the Monaragala & Buttala Integrated Water Supply project. This design & build contract, scheduled for 30 months, has an estimated total value of 24 million. As water treatment contractor, BESIX will manage the construction of two river water intakes, a drinking water treatment plant ( production capacity: m³/day), four ground reservoirs, access roads including bridges, housing & technical buildings, and finally a transmission and 14

distribution network with a total length of about 140 km. BESIX was required to work in close partnership with local contractors for civil works, distribution networks and M&E installation and to cooperate with a local design for engineering assistance. But how did it all start? The National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWSDB) was looking for foreign funding and sought a reputed international contractor. The Board selected BESIX as the company best qualified for water projects in Sri Lanka. Besides the professional expertise, the NWSDB looked for Belgian aid and soft financing: sponsorship from Finexpo, the advisory committee managed by the Foreign Affairs Administration and covered by ONDD, the public credit insurer of global exports. Considering that there is as yet no common access to potable water in the poor Monaragala & Buttala region, it is of vital importance for this operation to succeed, especially for the local population. After the finalization of the project, more Sri Lankans will have safe drinking water, enhancing the health condition of all beneficiaries. The project is also creating jobs for the local population during the construction period and afterwards for operation and maintenance. The water treatment plant is being built deep in the jungle on a mountain slope of approximately 35%. It is difficult to access meaning that, also logistically, this is quite an undertaking. Lay-out, roads and civil construction works, it was like solving a puzzle. Another important challenge: the understanding and relations with our local partners and authorities. But so far, this, our first Sri Lankan job, is a real success and the project is running smoothly. 16 Deckx Elektro Mechanica nv Goormansdijk 64 B-2840 Dessel, Belgium Phone: URL: Efficiency, flexibility and quality for both the public and the private sector In short Deckx Elektro Mechanica is part of the Deckx construction group, itself a subsidiary of the larger Stadsbader group, with more than 900 employees and a consolidated turnover of about 170 million. The company can boast over 25 years of relevant experience in the execution of drinking water and wastewater treatment projects and maintenance of related installations. Deckx E.M. designs and builds customized mechanical and electronic equipment such as switch boxes and control panels for wastewater treatment plants as well as for drinking water production units, water softening systems, and pumping stations. It provides turnkey solutions for both the public and the private sector. Deckx E.M., employing more than 60 people, had a turnover of about 10 million in Deckx is widely praised for the quality of its precision work and its automated systems, allowing the client to use staff more efficiently. A closer look In the 100 years of its existence, Deckx has been growing from a small family business to an important construction company, focusing on public utilities and industrial and public buildings. The electro mechanical department came later, in the 1980s. Deckx E.M. became a company in its own right, as part of the Deckx Group. In 2008, the Deckx Group was acquired by Stadsbader, a large construction group, based at Harelbeke (Belgian province of West-Flanders), and specialist in engineering structures such as roads, bridges and sewerage as well as public buildings, supermarkets etc With the acquisition of Deckx, Stadsbader inherited considerable expertise in environmental projects and that is where Deckx E.M came in with its specific know-how. Just a few years ago, Deckx E.M. worked mainly for drinking water companies such as VMW, currently known as De Watergroep (a TNAV-member), Pidpa (idem), AWW and TMVW, and also for Aquafin (private company in charge of wastewater treatment infrastructure in the Flemish part of Belgium). Since 2002, Deckx has also been working for other private customers. The first one was Estée Lauder. Deckx designed and built a wastewater treatment unit for the plant of this cosmetics group at Oevel (Geel, province of Antwerp, Belgium). The successful extension towards private companies was the result of intense but mutually beneficial cooperation with engineering bureaus and with a number of TNAV-members. A cautious recruitment policy was helpful in attracting compe- Ceo: Stefaan Meulemans Unique Selling Proposition: With its craftsmanship and customer-oriented attitude Deckx is bound to deliver the best available solution to your water treatment problem. 16

tent and experienced people. Deckx E.M. also has excellent relations with institutes of higher learning and year after year offers traineeships to promising students. Lately, Deckx has delivered a large amount of turnkey-projects. The company contributes to projects in quite a number of countries, from the Netherlands to Saudi Arabia and Drinking water plant at Eisden (Province of Limburg) for De Watergroep Nigeria. It looks as if the takeover by the Stadsbader group has considerably increased the potential of Deckx E.M. Naturally, the consolidation offered additional opportunities to both partners with their largely complementary activities. In the eyes of potential customers, the new group has more to offer than the two separate companies. Stadsbader has a solid reputation as a reliable partner in the area of public works, buildings etc. however, many customers wanted their building contractor to also take care of electromechanical equipment and to build complete water treatment plants. That is why Deckx was welcomed as the ideal partner. Deckx E.M currently has a small team of six, operating from the Stadbader headquarters at Harelbeke. It serves customers in the West of Belgium and Northern France. The main Deck E.M. branch at Dessel concentrates on the design and building of piping systems and control panels and will mainly serve customers in the province of Antwerp and the surrounding region, including the Netherlands. Success story Building a UV-disinfection unit for a drinking water production plant In early January 2012, Deckx E.M. took up an important challenge: the company agreed to build a fully equipped UV-disinfection unit for the drinking water production plant of AWW at Oelegem (near Antwerp), without causing any temporary disruption of the drinking water distribution system. Deckx agreed to build the plant and the roads leading to it, and of course the UV-unit as such. So far so good, Deckx certainly had all the required know-how, but it did not have time on its side: it had to deliver the new disinfection unit within 180 working days. The client, the Antwerp drinking water company AWW, had opted for UV-disinfection for a very good reason. UV is simply the best available and extremely efficient treatment towards the eradication of micro-organisms, including the infamous cryptosporidium bacteria, as UV will destroy the DNA of these bacteria. Chlorine might be just as efficient, but it would have to be used in a highly concentrated form well beyond the norms that health and environmental authorities are prepared to accept for drinking water. The drinking water plant already had settlement tanks, rapid and slow sand filters, an activated carbon filtration unit and an after treatment with sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). Deckx had to move the secondary treatment to the new building and to add the UV as the ultimate or tertiary treatment facility. The project was finalized even earlier than expected 17

in mid December Deckx E.M did a tremendous job, as it was responsible not just for the new building but also for the surrounding roads, for excavating the building site and the welding and installation of the huge pipes with a diameter of up to mm. The synergy of building expertise and electromechanical know-how clearly is one of Deckx main assets. 20 DESOTEC ACTIVATED CARBON nv Regenbeekstraat 44 B-8800 Roeselare (Belgium) Phone: +32 (0) URL: Adsorption on the move In short Desotec Activated Carbon is an international developer, producer and supplier of purification solutions mainly based on activated carbon technology. Our complete solutions include the supply of a wide range of mobile adsorption systems, the design, construction and start up of tailor made fixed systems and the recycling of used activated carbon. The AIRCON mobile adsorption systems are designed to purify gases using the AIRPEL range of products while our MOBICON systems are used to purify liquids with the ORGANOSORB range of products. The secret of our success is our vision of customer service, 24 hours per day and 7 days a week. A closer look Desotec was founded in 1990 and has in the meantime grown into the leading supplier of mobile activated carbon filters in Europe for the purification of liquids (MOBICON ) and gases (AIRCON ). But we also design the ideal filter for your specific application and have it built for you (FILTRAFIX ). The headquarters of the company are located in Roeselare, Belgium. The turnover for 2013 amounted to approximately 36 million, which was achieved with a workforce of In April 2011, AAC Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Desotec. The original founders retain a significant minority stake and are members of the Board of Directors. In 2012, Desotec Activated Carbon opened a service centre in Gdansk (Poland) with a new warehouse, workshop and modern sales offices and in 2013, Desotec Activated Carbon expands south and establishes Desotec Iberica located in Tarragona not far from the harbour with sales offices, a 1100m2 warehouse and 1200m2 outside storage. In a not too distant past, Desotec focused on wastewater and sludge treatment. After a while, however, the company found itself a lucrative niche called activated carbon. As a true niche player Desotec has no competitors within TNAV and this was certainly helpful. The activities of Desotec are threefold, Joost Desmet, CEO, explains. Firstly, we take care of the production and delivery of activated carbon. Desotec s capability and readiness to offer our customers the most suitable type of activated carbon for any application might very well be our unique selling proposition. Joost Desmet, CEO Unique Selling Proposition: Desotec develops and builds tailor-made installations delivering added value and service to its customers. The company also has a large fleet of mobile interchangeable filters in Europe for the purification of liquids (MOBICON ) and gases (AIRCON ). On the one hand, this mobility feature allows the company to offer a fast service and delivery of ready-to-use activated carbon solutions, avoiding on-site manipulation of carbon. On the other hand, the client benefits from a cost-efficient and eco-friendly solution. 20

Organosorb range of products for purification of liquids In order to meet all customers demands, the company constantly develops new products and has acquired five warehouses throughout Europe, to ensure swift delivery at any time. Desmet goes on: Secondly: almost naturally, and at a very early stage, we started designing and renting activated carbon-based filters. For the treatment of liquids and gases the company develops and builds tailor-made filters. Another particular feature is Desotec s impressive fleet of mobile filters, the largest in Europe. For many customers renting a filter from Desotec is the most comfortable and least expensive solution, Desmet asserts. Thirdly, we make sure that the spent carbon is returned to us so that we can reactivate it. This has proven to be very successful, and it is our contribution to sustainability. To a large extent, Desotec owes its success to its thorough understanding of the business and to the quality of services offered. Perhaps the most conspicuous is the return of spent activated carbon. Desotec has the necessary permits for this type of activity as well as for the international transport of the materials if required. The company has built a state-of-the-art reactivation facility in Roeselare, its home base, especially for this purpose. Technologies Desotec Activated Carbon is an international developer, producer and supplier of purification solutions mainly based on activated carbon technology for liquid and gas treatment applications. Activated carbon treatment is primarily based on a phenomenon called adsorption, in which molecules of a liquid or gas are trapped by either an external or internal surface of a solid. The phenomenon is somewhat similar to iron filings being held by a magnet. Activated carbon has a very high internal surface area (up to 1500m2/gram) and is thus an ideal material for adsorption. To further improve the activated carbon properties for certain applications, Desotec can impregnate the activated carbon with selected chemicals. Desotec s mobile activated carbon filters, such as the MOBICON, have proven to be immensely successful and are one of the company s main assets. Available on a rental base, without investment cost 21

and applicable anywhere, the mobile container can be used on-site in any application such as tertiary water purification, water recycling, groundwater sanitation, treatment of leachate... Mobicon : mobile activated carbon filter Once the activated carbon is saturated, the entire MOBICON is replaced by another unit, filled with new activated carbon or filtration media. This eliminates the need for spent activated carbon disposal by the customer. As part of Desotec s complete service package, we offer several recycling or treatment options: Recycling of spent activated carbon by thermal reactivation Energy valorisation of spent activated carbon or other carbonaceous media In the rare event that spent material cannot be reactivated or the energy cannot be valorised, Desotec assures the proper elimination of the spent material. The recycling option depends on the nature of the spent product. Prior to anything, Desotec will analyze the process data and the spent product sample supplied by the user, to advise and select the most cost effective and environmentally friendly solution. Besides the standard packages, Desotec s engineering services design and manufacture tailor-made activated carbon adsorbers for liquids (FILTRAFIX -L). They also offer advice and engineering services for the development and construction of fixed activated carbon air filters (FILTRAFIX -A), and mobile activated carbon filters for air treatment (OXYCON ) are available on rental base. Services include strong logistics, a huge stock of the most common types of activated carbon, a company lab for testing and quality control, etc. For the replacement of small quantities of activated carbon, the company offers a full service. Its vacuum truck comes on site to empty fixed filters and after that, it takes care of the refill. Fast and efficient. What more could one want? Another Desotec showpiece is OXYCON, an aerated activated carbon filter system. The OXYCON system is based on the efficient aeration of activated carbon filters, used in wastewater treatment. In addition to adsorption processes, the chemical and biological oxidation of contaminants is stimu- 22

lated. The system considerably increases the lifetime of the carbon filter and improves the reduction of recalcitrant, non-biodegradable molecules. Success story As an innovative company, Desotec continuously develops new products and mobile filters to offer the best solutions for a wide range of customer applications. In 2012, Desotec Activated Carbon developed and patented the world s largest mobile air treatment filter system, the AIRCON V-XL. The system consists of a fixed part, the AIRCONNECT, on top of which the AIRCON V-XL is positioned. This fixed part is connected directly to the gas to be treated, which makes the need of flexible connections superfluous. The AIRCONNECT system of our AIRCON V-XL has a revolutionary design, resulting in the world s first real click-and-start activated carbon filtration system, for gas flow rates up to 55,000m3/h per unit. The AIRCON AIRCONNECT system has several advantages compared to other odour removal systems it has a big filtration surface and thus a lower pressure drop and energy consumption for the treatment of the same flow rate compared to deep bed filters it can treat higher flow rates so potentially less activated carbon is needed to treat the same flow rate it has a higher installed volume so higher loadings can be obtained it is safe: no scaffolding or lifting needed to connect the unit to the plant it needs no flexible hosing; the truck positions the filter on top of the AIRCONNECT inlet and outlet are on ground level so sampling and follow up are simple and easy (VOC, CO, etc,...) activated carbon beds can be used in series or in parallel without any modifications customer operating cost is lower due to less units on site and lower carbon consumption lower transport cost per unit weight of carbon since more carbon is transported at once. Other subsidiaries are located in Karlsruhe, Germany, Manila, the Philippines, Bangkok, Thailand, Austin (Texas) USA and in Sao Paulo, in Brazil. GWE s know-how is backed up by more than 350 operating plants in more than 50 countries worldwide. Water-related activities represent about 70% of sales and continue their growth, even if solid waste treatment activities are growing faster. GWE- Belgium based at Loppem (near Brugge, in the West of Belgium) is the centre of excellence and source of innovation for the mother company and its operations in virtually every corner of the world. A closer look Anaerobic digestion is the spearhead of GWE-activities, even if the company will also take care of the other stages of water and sludge treatment. The GWE corporate headquarters in Hong Kong counts on us for the solution of the liquid and solid waste problems of our customers. So it should not come as a surprise that GWE invests money and manpower in research, be it solution-oriented research, asserts Pascal Pipyn, Executive Vice- President Process and R&D. As the Belgian office is the service center for the GWE group as a whole, the workload is increasing now that the company is expanding. GWE recently set up new subsidiary companies in the USA and South-America. The company works with local partners and the actual construction work is outsourced to local subcontractors. That GWE wants to be a key partner in the biomass-related industry seems normal considering its preference for and experience in anaerobic digestion. The potential of the biomass industry is huge, says Pascal Pipyn. Many South-East Asian customers have already shown interest as the technology provides renewable energy, reducing CO2-emissions from fossil fuel. Several potential partners are eager to be involved in the pre-treatment phase (sorting, fractioning of garbage, removal of metals,...). Also according to GWE s CEO, Jean Pierre Ombregt, the burgeoning scale of waste now being extracted from brewery process waters (GWE has several faithful customers in the brewery sector) presents a goldmine of opportunity for green energy production in breweries globally as they seek to cut back on water use from current levels of between 4 and 6 litres of water to produce one litre of beer. Technologies The range of reactors available from GWE comprises - The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (ANUBIX B),. GWE s work horse, medium to high loading rate UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed) reactor, with incorporated plate separator, used for most low to medium strength mainly soluble carbohydrate containing effluents. Attains amazing COD removal efficiencies, in some cases up to 99%. The Upflow Anaerobic Contact Reactor (ANUBIX C) is a kind of hybrid between a UASB and an Anaerobic Contact Reactor for wastewaters with a moderate suspended solids content such as the ones from fruit and vegetable processing plants. - The very high loaded upflow tower-like EGSB reactor (ANUBIX T), working with granular sludge for specific wastewater and space limited sites. - The Mesophilic or Thermophilic Completely Stirred Reactor (ANAMIX M and T) with special shredder and mixing device for wastewaters containing a very high amount of suspended solids or for organic wastes, slurries and sludge. - The Anaerobic Filter Reactor (ANAFIX ) using a carrier material for the biomass, e.g. for wastewaters from the fermentation industry, the chemical industry, the pharmaceutical industry, where suboptimal conditions prevail. - The Anaerobic Contact Reactor with biogas induced flotation (FLOTAMET ) in a proprietary Dissolved Biogas Flotation tank (DBF tank) for wastewaters containing significant amounts of fats, oils and greases or with a high salt content. The company s main focus lies on sustainable tailor-made water solutions, to be implemented through state-of-the-art technologies and adapted financing packages. After having listened carefully to the specific needs of the client, Hydris Engineering will offer a solution at a competitive rate and within the required time frame. Marc Beunen Hydris General Manager Hydris Engineering believes in a personal approach, and prefers to build up long term strategic partnerships. Mutual trust is felt to be beneficial for all involved parties. A closer look Looking for a solution for your soaring water and energy costs? Then Hydris Engineering is your first choice for advice and support. Not only does Hydris offer consultancy services, they also offer unique and valuable packaged solutions for your process water treatments, waste water recycling and solubles valorisation needs, whether through Design & Build, DBOOM or cost per m³. Hydris can manage the entire water cycle in your company. Although created as a full PWG-subsidiary as recently as 2011, most Hydris team members have many years of experience in water and wastewater treatment. All of them are fully aware that water is a crucial resource that often determines the quality of the end-product. Unique selling proposition: Bring our customer attractive and unrivalled packaged solutions through high value proprietary technologies, improvement of the costs expenses and the cash position of our customers, and through a unique service : that s our ambition, day after day. This is the purpose of our 3 main programs : Sustain : For optimum water, chemicals and energy savings on low pressure boilers Cycool : For cost optimization of cooling towers operations Recyqua : For more sustainable industrial water resources, and the valorization of valuable waste by- products (soluble and solid). The same principles underlie the offer for our extensive range of containerized water treatments either for long term operational lease or shorter term rental. 28

The company gives full priority to sustainability. Hydris team members have many years of In terms of water treatment this means: process experience in water and wastewater treatment. All of them are fully aware that water is water reuse with the final goal of (almost) complete closure of the water loop and Total Cost of a crucial resource that determines the quality Ownership optimization. of the end-product. Marc Beunen, CEO of Hydris Engineering, brought with him his no-nonsense vision and knowledge. He recalls how it all began, several years ago: We started carefully, just tackling the easy-to-solve problems and working on a no cure no pay - basis. Sometimes we helped the customer to save energy, or time, or money, or all of these three. Gradually we became the preferred partner to quite some of these customers. But we are still learning and will not accept an assignment when we are not absolutely sure we can actually deliver. So even if we can cope, for example, with the design and engineering of very ambitious water treatment installations, we are happy to leave this part of the market to the bigger TNAV-members, at least for the time being (smiles). That was the not too distant past. Today, the Hydris multidisciplinary engineering team is ready to take on bigger, more complicated challenges. But also SMEs looking for new or revamped water treatment installations will find all they need with Hydris. Hydris has all the required expertise to analyze a company s water balance, which is a precondition to any solution it may suggest. The Hydris engineers will advise the customer on matters such as process optimization, the introduction of water saving measures, the evaluation of alternative water sources, such as surface waters, rainwater, process water reuse, and best available techniques. The customer can also request a pilot installation, which is very reliable in determining the best solution to his water-related problems. Hydris can provide a turnkey installation, from process design and dimensioning to start-up and delivery, but will pay the utmost attention to the customer s needs and preferences. After start-up, accurate follow-up and regular maintenance will warrant the efficiency of the installation. With its command and control software Hydris can closely and permanently follow up the operations via the internet and over the phone. Water treatment is of course essential to a customer s business, but it is hardly a core activity. That is why Hydris is always prepared to take care of the operation of the installation in the most cost-effective and SUSTAIN Containerized Test Unit under rental for boiler optimization 29

efficient way. Interesting to know is that Hydris can pre-finance your project. The installation will be paid off on a monthly basis or at a rate based on the produced water flow. Meanwhile, your investment budget remains available for core business related projects. Last but not least, Hydris rents mobile systems for process water treatment and reuse, ideal for temporary solutions during shutdown or major breakdowns. The company makes it a point of honour to work out affordable and customized solutions. Hydris Engineering is also an active participant in research & development projects to further improve the reuse of process water. Technologies Dosage pumps, neutralisation, ClO2 generation and dosing, activated carbon filtration, media filtration (sand, Crystal Right, Turbidex, ),, softening and ion exchange, UV-disinfection, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, KR technology (high recovery membrane treatment), electro deionization, membrane distillation The Hydris Engineering team has accumulated an impressive amount of useful information on and experience with specific membrane technologies such as KR high rejection RO (90% recovery), chemical free continuous demineralization (<0,1 µs/cm), and membrane distillation for water evaporation by low temperature residual heat and solubles concentration up to solubility limit (up to 600 g/l and more). Such unique technologies have been successfully implemented in the food and beverage sector for boiler optimisation, in the chemical sector for the valorisation of soluble waste by products, in the power sector (peaking plant) for the cost optimization of the make up water production in the (shale) gas sector for the wastewater treatment, for disposal places in order to dramatically reduce the percolates treatment costs, and more. Success story Towards the end of 2013, Hydris Engineering was faced with an exceptional challenge. Euraqua - a sister company within the Pollet Water Group - had received a request for a proposal from an Estonian customer with different plants in Tallinn (capital city of Estonia), Helsinki (Finland) and in the Russian cities Moscow and Perm. This customer wanted a plug and play water treatment plant for the upgrade of surface water to drinking water quality. Flow rate of the installation had to be 360 m³/hour and the plant would have to be permanently and fully operational, i.e. seven days a week and 24 hours a day. It soon became apparent that Hydris was the right partner for the job. We managed to deliver within the imposed time limits: a true success story. The mere fact that Hydris Engineering had developed a complete range of standard filters was extremely helpful in putting together a most attractive bid in a matter of days. The contract details were talked through with our partner in Estonia and the final order followed soon after. The main difficulty was the short delivery time: within five weeks the equipment had to reach the port of Zeebrugge (Belgium) to be shipped to its final destination in Novosibirsk in Asian Russia, We started preparing the logistics as soon as possible, and were aware that from that moment on, there was no turning back... Our subcontractors acted quickly and the deadline remained within reach. The construction of the installation, and more specifically the assembly of the PVC-collectors 30

started real soon. Whereas the control boxes were being assembled the tanks were welded and epoxy coated. All preparatory subassembly work being delivered in time, the real assembly could start and it was not long before all filters stood in our workshop, ready to undergo a series of tests. The customer was permanently informed about how the work advanced by means of the pictures and technical drawings we ed. The final result was impressive: 1 large-sized filtration unit with 12 filter tanks with a diameter of 1,800 millimetres. It took 5 shipping containers to forward the complete installation from our warehouse in Waregem via Zeebrugge to Novosibirsk. The water treatment plant was expected to be started up in September or October References 2014 United Pet foods (F): Wimille 5 m3/h Sustain Boiler Optimization 2014 Pinguin (B): Westrozebeke 15 m3/h Sustain Boiler Optimization 2014 Euraqua (Russia): Novosibirsk 350 m3/h Hydris DS7 Potable Water Media Filtration 2014 Dequenne Chimie (B): Ghlin 5 m3/h KNO3 valorization through Sand filters Sea Water RO and rented membrane distillation system 2014 Dölher (NL): Roggel - Eindhoven 20 m3/h ion exchange demineralization 350 m3/h potable water production on skids for Novosibirsk Russia 31

METIS nv Koolmijnlaan 185 B-3582 Beringen (Belgium) Phone: +32 (0) URL: An excellent partner for any company with a water or air treatment problem In short Metis nv, based at Beringen in the Belgian province of Limburg is well placed to tackle both wastewater and air treatment problems. It is part of the thriving Benvitec group, made up of highly specialized and mutually synergetic companies, mainly dealing with environmental issues, the development of plastic piping systems and storage tanks for construction and other industrial activities. Created in 1991, Benvitec currently employs about 190 in its three plants. The annual turnover amounts to EUR 35 million approximately. Joachim Desaever, Due to its specific organisation and philosophy, Metis offers its customers the benefits of a small but highly specialized company such as minimal Senior Project Manager bureaucratic hassle and easy informal communication. But at the same time, it can count on the expertise, power and material infrastructure of the Group. A closer look Metis started small about twenty years ago, but has been growing steadily ever since. It prefers to invest the considerable experience it has gained over the years in lasting customer relationships based on mutual trust. The company has undeniably found a place of its own in the competitive arena of water and air treatment. Its limited overhead allows Metis to operate cost-effectively and to be very competitive. At the same time, and whenever this seems necessary, it can count on helping hands from the other Benvitec partners. Metis is perfectly capable of delivering turnkey projects, both in water and air treatment and to assume full responsibility of projects, from design to operations and maintenance. But the company is happy when asked to revamp or extend existing installations as well. Although quite busy, Metis does not want to rush things and grow too fast. For the time being, we prefer to handle 5 to 6 major projects a year, says Joachim Desaever, Senior Project Manager with Metis. When, in addition to that, we manage to bring in a few small-scale projects, in maintenance and/or as subcontractors, we have more than enough to keep us busy. Maximum customer satisfaction is our absolute priority. Unique selling proposition: Its limited overhead allows Metis to offer its customers both the benefits of a smaller and highly specialized company and those of Benvitec, its strong and solid partner. 32

We want to make it clear to our customers that their needs come first, Desaever continues. Their problem is carefully analyzed and extensively discussed. Only then will we come forward with a solution compatible with our client s needs and means. Nor does our responsibility end right after completion. We are always available for maintenance and for all kinds of advice and prepared to provide solutions for ad hoc problems. As things stand, Metis finds its share of challenging projects in Belgium and is not actively looking for projects abroad. It is perfectly willing, however, to contribute to projects in third countries as a subcontractor, should such opportunities present themselves. Technologies Some of the technologies in which Metis had built up more than average experience: - mechanical separation techniques : grids, sieves, sand-filters, filter-presses - physical & chemical treatment - biological treatments - thermic and chemical disinfection - flotation and decantation - evaporators - polymer units & dosing boxes Success story EKOL water treatment carried out by Metis Ekol, plastics recycling company (Houthalen Belgium): wastewater treatment Ekol at Houthalen (Limburg, Belgium) chose Metis nv for a new turnkey water treatment plant. Metis, was fully in charge of this project from the earliest concept to solution to delivery. The challenge was to provide an installation for the treatment of 30m³ of used water/hour for reuse in the production process. Since 1991, Ekol had been recycling more than 69,000 tons of mixed plastic waste in an ecologically sustainable way. The plastic waste came from a population of about 750,000 from three Belgian 33

provinces and was recycled into new and useful final products. An eco-friendly solution, considering that earlier on, this type of waste used to be incinerated or dumped. The company also wanted to take care of the eco-efficiency of the recycling process, energy and water consumption and water treatment. Metis nv could benefit from the useful synergies with other companies belonging to the Benvitec group. The latter produced and delivered the pipe flocculators, the polymer production unit, the dosing boxes, the storage tanks for chemicals, and buffer tanks as well as all pipes and fittings. Whereas Metis nv contributed to the project with the know-how and experience of its engineers, it could also count on the input from the complete engineering team of the Benvitec Group whenever this made sense. Ecologically relevant is that Ekol henceforth simply has no wastewater, as all treated water is reused in the production process (which also requires rainwater, but no municipal water). The installation works perfectly and requires hardly any attention or manpower. The Ekol management fully agreed that this project once again delivered proof that Metis nv is the reliable partner for the solution of wastewater-related problems. 35 Pantarein, bvba Egide Walschaertsstraat B-2018 Mechelen, Belgium Phone: +32 (0) URL: Sustainable solutions for all types of wastewater In short Customers turning to Pantarein will benefit from the know-how and experience this company has built up since its creation about twenty years ago. Two possibilities: 1) the customer may be in need of a new installation 2) his/her existing wastewater treatment system is not functioning properly (poor effluent quality or high operating cost) and a revamping operation is badly needed, or so it seems. In both cases Pantarein will conduct an audit. After the analysis, the customer can expect Pantarein to come forward with different alternatives to choose from, pointing out pros and cons. Pantarein will offer a reliable Piet Delanghe, General Manager view of the expected capital and operational expenditure. From the analysis of the wastewater from your company until final delivery, Pantarein is an all-round solution provider who first has the customer s (financial) interest at heart and comes forward with the solution that really suits you and is within your reach. This policy seems to bear fruit as Pantarein is growing slowly but steadily. Employing 20 to 25 people, the company currently has a turnover of about EUR 3 million. Even if Pantarein mainly works for customers in Belgium, and will probably continue to do so, the company is increasingly active abroad. A closer look It all starts with a feasibility study to find out: whether it is best for your company to discharge effluent into the sewer system, to have a water treatment system of your own or should have the wastewater picked up for treatment by third parties, and which techniques are most suitable if an on-site water treatment plant is the best option. Optimization of existing wastewater treatment units: How is the customer s present system working? To find out, Pantarein gathers data and performs additional measurements if necessary. Pantarein has several fully automated pilot systems of its own and that s really helpful as it allows the company to test the biodegradability and/or filtration properties of wastewater on location, for longer periods. Unique selling proposition: Common sense and pragmatism are key for Pantarein, so the company does not favour any specific technology but selects the sustainable solution that best suits the customer 35

With the collected data at hand, we can fine-tune the design of the water treatment plant where necessary. This will provide us with a good view of the water treatment system. In some cases a small intervention will do, requiring no major investment. However, more important modifications may be needed. Pantarein s study then results in a detailed overview of these modifications, including design, technical specifications and budget. The company is perfectly able to carry out the modifications for the indicated prices. The mere fact that pre-assembling takes place in the Pantarein workshop reduces disruption of the water treatment unit to a minimum. A new water treatment installation Pantarein also builds and commissions complete water treatment plants and can already offer price guarantees in the study phase. After an in-depth study, a detailed plan is worked out, covering design, volumes and technical specifications. In consulta- a long term maintenance partnership tion with the customer, Pantarein then makes a shopping list for suppliers of pumps, valves, electronic equipment etc The technology is fully developed in-house. Furthermore, during the work, Pantarein acts as project manager for his customer and as contact person for the suppliers. After delivery, the work is not over and done with. Pantarein recommends a long term mutually beneficial maintenance partnership and is fully prepared to further monitor the functioning of the installation both technologically and biologically, via a maintenance contract. This approach comprises both on-site and online monitoring of the water treatment installation. Technologies The Pantarein approach is pragmatic, meaning that the company has no proprietary technologies and will not try to persuade the customer to use any specific technology. Its policy is to select the best solution on a case-by-case basis. Pantarein is familiar with both aerobic and anaerobic treatment, possibly in combination with membranes. Pantarein provides flotations if this seems required and polishing of the biological effluent (through activated carbon, disinfection or nanofiltration). These last few years, Pantarein has been actively involved in a growing number of projects focusing on the reuse of water. Furthermore, Pantarein takes an active role in several research projects to develop new and more efficient water treatment techniques. Success story The rapid growth and development of Pantarein while staying true to its core value of economic and environmental sustainability is the true success story. Pantarein was created in 2000 as a one-man business. It currently employs over 20 people. The growth of Pantarein has had its effect on the services provided. In the early days, Pantarein started as an engineering bureau. Today, the company offers its clients a full package of services ranging 36

from engineering to construction and to operation of a water treatment plant, from study over contact with the authorities to implementation of the findings. The continuing growth of Pantarein is shown by a sustained annual increase of ca. 30% in turnover. The rapid growth of Pantarein is sustained by a group of enthusiastic, complementary people who can provide every conceivable service with regard to water treatment, a prolonged close collaboration between Pantarein and the customer and a focus on ever more sustainable technology: water reuse projects for different applications, optimization of energy efficiency for existing water treatment installations, and a continuous development of new technology through different research projects. Selected references Pantarein can offer a solution for all types of wastewater as shown. The client portfolio evidences the versatility of this TNAV member company. A selection of Pantarein references (food and beverage) is shown below. So far, ten breweries of special beers have entrusted the treatment of their wastewater to Pantarein. In nearly all, the company took care of design and construction of the WWTP. Furthermore, the good operation of the plants is ensured through a close collaboration between Pantarein and the customer. - Brewery of Westmalle (Westmalle, Belgium) membrane bioreactor (MBR), capacity kg COD/ day, 350 m³/day - Proef ( Taste ) brewery (Lochristi, Belgium), sequential batch reactor (SBR), capacity: 840 kg COD/d, 120 m³/d - Huyghe Brewery (Melle, Belgium), MBR, capacity: 900 kg COD/d, 165 m³/d Pantarein also contributes to a more sustainable brewery process. The treated wastewater undergoes a polishing step where it is purified to drinking water quality. Frikom, Belgrade (Serbia), mainly produces frozen vegetables, pastry and ice cream. The WWTP consists of a flotation unit (removal of fatty components from the wastewater) and an SBR-type biological treatment with a capacity of kg COD/d. The project will be completed within months (Sept. 2014). Aan additional anaerobic reactor will be constructed in the near future. Izico (Bocholt, Belgium): optimization of the existing flotation unit of the WWTP-water treatment installation. A biological treatment (SBR-type, capacity: 770 kg COD/d, 280 m³/d) was added to allow discharge of the purified water into surface water. Optimization of WWTP at Hooge Maey (Antwerp, Belgium). The operation included : - improved automation of the plant; - integration of an inline measurement of the nitrogen concentration in the effluent controlling plant operation; - training of the personnel of the plant; - construction of three additional balancing tanks; To increase capacity of the installation, an anaerobic pretreatment will be built in H2, Pantarein Membrane Filtration (Westmalle, Belgium) 37

Purazur is a subsidiary to DEC, the environmental contractor of the global DEME Group, DEME being an acronym for Dredging Environmental and Marine Engineering. As to the Purazur activities, these are adequately summarized by the company s General Manager, Mie De Wit: In developed countries we think ahead, linking the wastewater treatment with the production process. In emerging countries we stick to the essential : providing hygienic solutions for (waste)water. A closer look With its workforce of 4500, DEME has operations on all continents, at sea and on land. The Group is particularly committed to essential values such as safety, environmental care, sustainability and corporate social responsibility. These values provide the drive of all involved to develop solutions for a great number of societal needs and challenges. Design and Build of Physical-Chemical treatment for the gypsum waste dump at Terranova, Riemst, Belgium Mie De Wit, General Manager Purazur DEME owes its strength to its innovative approach and its preference for sustainable solutions for: - (historical) pollution through water, soil and sludge treatment; - rising sea-levels, by means of beach replenishment, coastal defense and shoreline protection works; - green gas reduction through the development of renewable green and blue energies; - raw material exhaustion by extraction of granulates and minerals at sea; - population pressure in coastal regions by land creation in densely populated regions for port development and new industries. 39

With its basic as well as with its advanced water treatment technologies, Purazur is key in the implementation of the DEME group sustainable strategy. Preventive measures in the production process avoiding the presence of difficultly removable pollutants in the wastewater, are by far the most sustainable solution. When offering a wastewater solution Purazur will recommend upstream measures to its customer. Purazur uses the right technology to recover materials and energy from partial wastewater streams before they enter the common wastewater system. When closing the loop, the effluent of the wastewater treatment can be used as process water for the production process. Purazur equips the wastewater treatment process with advanced measuring and control systems and statistical process control systems. The production process and the wastewater treatment are linked by early warning systems in both directions for potential upsets. Technologies Purazur offers both basic and advanced water treatment technologies. For any kind of assignment, the company prefers to be your partner and therefore offers a wide range of contract types for you to choose from. As a subsidiary of the DEME Group, Purazur has the financial power to offer a complete package to get the cost of water treatment off balance for the customer. Purazur takes on the capex investment, the customer pays a fee, representing an accountable cost. Success story Design and Build of Microfiltration treatment for polishing of mercury-containing groundwater, Lokeren, Belgium, 2012 In the early years of the 20th century, factories in the area (North-West of Belgium) used mercury for the production of felt. The resulting soil and groundwater contamination of such a site in the city of Lokeren required the construction of a groundwater treatment plant, before any discharge of the effluent into the sewage system could be considered. It took extensive laboratory tests to decide about the best way to clean the heavily mercurypolluted groundwater. Microfiltration appeared to be the best solution, both financially and in terms of efficiency. Chemicals were added, turning the dissolved mercury into a very fine precipitate, blocked by the microfiltration membrane, a process eventually causing membrane obstruction. In order to ensure continuous flow, the membranes were flushed at very regular intervals and for the same reason a pretreatment through coagulation / flocculation and settling was introduced. This improved microfiltration efficiency by 200 up to 300 %. Flow: 20 m³/h Efficiency WTP: Hg >99% Microfiltration treatment for polishing of groundwater polluted with mercury, Lokeren, Belgium,

Spirotech bvba Essenschotstraat 1 B-3980 Tessenderlo Phone: e.jansen@spirotech.be URL: Total and sustainable solutions for system efficiency In short Spirotech is an international company developing and manufacturing overall solutions for conditioning fluids in cooling, heating and industrial process installations. The innovative Spirotech products and services warrant fewer malfunctions and less wear and tear, faster commissioning and easier maintenance, higher yields and therefore lower energy consumption. Spirotech offers solutions for any problem in relation to corrosion, deposits or microbiology in open or closed water-based systems. Spirotech Belgium, the Belgian branch of this Dutch-owned group, focuses on industry and assists companies in reducing maintenance costs, enhancing process efficiency and making important energy savings. Eddy Jansen, General Manager Spirotech Belgium A closer look Spirotech Belgium wants process fluids to be absolutely clean. Even a small air bubble or the smallest particle of dirt can cause significant problems in an industrial installation. Corrosive substances and other dirt particles may end up in critical components, such as pumps, air valves and control valves, which leads to blockages and decreased heat transfer or cooling capacity. Unwanted air may also cause serious complications in a critical process. The Spirotech products have been developed to improve installation and process efficiency and work on the basis of natural and chemical principles. Clean system water provides Products and services better performance Spirotech offers well-founded advice tailored to the customer s needs and based on extensive research; a specialist range of analyses, recommendations and solutions for quality assurance and process improvement and optimally functioning fluid systems. It is impossible to give here a complete overview of the Spirotech product range. All products have one and the same purpose: improving installation and process efficiency. Among the most successful ones we mention: the SpiroTop fully automatic air vent: an installation fluid functions best when it contains as little air as possible. The SpiroTop removes air from the installation fast and effectively, without the need for maintenance. 42

The SpiroTrap removes dirt particles from installation water. This is important as even the smallest particles can cause huge problems in an installation. The SpiroTrap dirt separator is much more effective and low-maintenance than a filter, as a filter becomes blocked, resulting in a large pressure drop. Keeping installation fluid in perfect balance and conditioning: that is the power of the SpiroCross. The device uses various techniques to obtain this balance. First of all, the SpiroCross optimizes the water-side balance in climate installations using several groups and pumps. The SpiroCombi Magnet, with built-in magnet for even faster dirt separation. The SpiroCombi Magnet is a deaerator combined with a dirt separator in one single product, constantly removing free-circulating air, micro-bubbles and dirt particles. This innovative device quickly and efficiently collects magnetic and non-magnetic dirt particles in pipe systems. Dirt is discharged in no time. In particular the user-friendly design and high safety-level make this product unique. The SpiroCombi Magnet provides superb protection against magnetite for pumps with magnetic rotors and other valuable system components. 1. The dry-pocket construction is at the core and specially designed for the optimum collection of magnetite. 2. The unique SpiroTube. This component carries out deaeration and dirt separation and has very low resistance. 3. Cone. This neutralises the magnetic field: the magnetic dirt that passes this cone is discharged by releasing the magnetic force. 4. Drain valve for discharging the dirt collected. 5. Flexible drag mechanism. By sliding the mechanism downwards, magnetic dirt is dragged via the dry-pocket construction and collects at the bottom of the unit. The SpiroVent is a fully universal deaerator. It easily and effectively removes circulating air and micro bubbles from system water. SpiroPlus flushing agents and additives are designed to bring and keep both the system fluid and the system itself in top condition. Unique selling proposition: Our total solutions are not limited to fittings and accessories manufacture, Spirotech also offers knowledge and information. 43

SpiroPlus stabilized chlorine dioxide Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has been known for ages as a bleaching agent and water disinfectant. Unfortunately however, it is explosive, and to avoid accidents, its use is surrounded with all kinds of precautionary measures. Companies would receive the raw materials in liquid form and an expensive generator was required to safely mix these materials into chlorine dioxide gas before it was added to the water. Spirotech Belgium, however, recently developed and launched SpiroPlus stabilized chlorine dioxide. The two basic raw materials of chlorine dioxide are stabilized meaning that they can be injected directly in liquid form into the water that has to be treated, making the generator superfluous. For the production of liquid chlorine dioxide in situ one just has to put the liquid raw materials together. It takes a response time of about 7 hours to deliver 99.9% pure chlorine dioxide ready for use. The water can now be disinfected effectively with the help of a simple dosage pump. This chlorine dioxide is neither explosive nor corrosive, it will remain stable for one and a half month and the process leaves only innocuous by-products, NaCl (kitchen salt) and Na2SO4. SpiroPlus ClO2 is a safe and efficient solution for industries consuming huge amounts of water and requiring perfect disinfection: the food industry, cooling-towers (Clean pipes mean higher heat exchange efficiency, pump lifetime improvement and lower maintenance costs), hospitals (legionella prevention). No additional investment is needed when selecting SpiroPlus ClO2 as disinfectant. Success story Brewery Anders is a small, but innovative and ambitious brewery in the municipality of Halen in the Belgian province of Limburg. It prefers artisanal production methods and decided to use tap water for brewing. After a while, however, two important problems arose. The installation started to suf- 44

fer from a stainless steel bacteria perforating the steel pipes and a biofilm was formed in the tubes. Radical disinfection was necessary. Chlorine, however, was no option due to the corrosive effect on stainless pipes and as chlorine is not really effective in removing biofilm. That was the reason why the management decided to inject SpiroPlus stabilized chlorine dioxide on two specific spots, one where the municipal water entered the piping, a second one behind the water softener. The right dosing was determined after extensive measurements. It turned out that a mere 400 ml of SpiroPlus ClO2 would do to disinfect no less than 10,000 litres of water. The owners were quite relieved to see that the biofilm and bacteria disappeared in no time. Henceforth, a continuous injection of small quantities of chlorine dioxide would be enough to efficiently protect the installation. A closer look The undeniable success of Trevi is largely due to the company s customized approach of all environment related problems. Any solution in the area of water treatment and water reuse will start with an audit to understand the nature of your water-related problem. First priority is always to investigate which measures can be taken at the source. Advice on possible solutions is preceded by a technical and economical review. Trevi has no less than 90 mobile pilot units to check if suggested solutions are really effective and exploitation costs are acceptable. The company closely follows up on the test results. It designs and builds the installation meeting your specific requirements (only outsourcing the civil works). This dynamic SME can be said to take care of your wastewater problems from A to Z, even including the follow-up and complete exploitation at the wish of the customers. At Lanxess for instance, a follow-up of the complex biological wastewater plant is daily routine. The Brussels Airport Company entrusted Trevi with the complete exploitation of its wastewater treatment plant. A major accomplishment for this medium-sized but steadily growing company is that it was granted both ISO and quality certifications and VCA safety management system certificate. 46

Trevi wastewater treatment plant for Brussels Airport Success story An excellent solution for recuperation of energy from waste and wastewater. Together with business partner BioGastec, Trevi obtained a European patent for a single concept towards fermentation and processing of digestate (the material remaining after the anaerobic digestion). This new method has been successfully applied at least 5 times in the mean time. The processing installation was built for Ardo, at Ardooie (Belgian province of West-Flanders), a leading international producer of frozen vegetables. Year after year, Ardo is supposed to treat 35,000 tonnes of waste streams and on the other hand, its processing activities require huge amounts of electricity and heat. After thorough analysis and lots of pilot tests, a real life installation was designed and built, towards the valorization of these waste streams into electricity, heat and fertilizer, liquid as well as solid. A fermentation unit was added for the conversion of the waste streams into biogas and digestate. A cogeneration installation delivered electricity and heat out of the biogas. The heat was welcome as quantities of steam are required for the Ardo production process. The remainder of the fermentation process, the digestate, is highly concentrated in COD (up to 80,000 mg/l), N (up to 6000 mg/l) and P (up to 2000 mg/l). The digestate is then centrifuged and the solid fraction is used in France for soil improvement and fertilization, whereas the liquid fraction undergoes nitrification and denitrification and is converted into N2-gas. Given the high COD and N concentration levels, oxygen demand for this water treatment is very high. However, this is not too much of a problem, neither technically nor economically, with the fine bubble aeration technology Trevi has been successfully applying for up to twenty years already in water treatment. The effluent can be applied as a diluted fertilizer, valued by farmers for its high content of potash. The anaerobic pre-treatment of the wastewater out of the Ardo production process (2000 m³/day) 47

delivers additional biogas. The combined heat-power installation also provides the required heat for the anaerobic treatment. Follows further water treatment through nitrification and denitrification. Part of the effluent is reused, the remaining water is discharged into the surface water. Again, the effluent is treated with the Trevi fine bubble aeration technology. This technology was successfully introduced for this treatment some ten years ago. The challenge was to drastically increase the processing capacities, to reduce both energy consumption and sludge production and that was exactly what happened. Ardo wastewater treatment plant and biogas unit Using these techniques, Ardo succeeded in recovering about 25 % of its electricity consumption as well as 18 % of heat out of the treatment of vegetable waste. Ardo is another success story demonstrating to what extent the clever use of technology can contribute to closing the water circle and obtaining important savings in energy. 3 key references Brussels Airport: Construction and complete exploitation of the water treatment plant for Brussels airport. Success story FrieslandCampina is a major player in the milk and dairy sector. Its largest production plant at Aalter (Belgium) produces a wide range of dairy products. Recently, FrieslandCampina launched a campaign, the so-called route 2020 strategy, to encourage sustainable growth and added value. A vital part of this strategy was a water management plan able to cope with an important increase of production capacity. 50

FrieslandCampina saw the growing global demand for food products both healthy and sustainable as an important opportunity. A water audit and analysis made it obvious that it would not be possible to meet tomorrow s challenges with the existing water infrastructure. Therefore, water consumption per ton had to be reduced by at least 20% and water reuse was a necessity. Other aspects that came under review were the need for a thorough update of the water treatment equipment, a new environmental permit, heat loss and loss of production. The increased need of drinking water also resulted in higher production costs, considering that the use of groundwater is actively discouraged by the authorities. The answer to this challenging situation was the treatment, up to process water quality, of one of the main wastewater streams: the condensed water from the evaporators. There was general agreement that this was the most efficient way to reduce drinking water usage as well as effluent discharge. There were other benefits: the low conductivity of the condensed water and its high temperature. One drawback BiopROtector fixed however: the condensed water contained organic substances which could not be fully stopped by the RO membranes. In 2013 Veolia Water Technologies developed a plan that dealt with all the issues mentioned. Veolia s proprietary BiopROtector technology ensured that organic substances could be fully neutralized whereas biofouling was reduced to a strict minimum. A UF and RO after-treatment provided the very high water quality required for process water in the food industry. The condensed water could be used as boiler feed water, CIP (cleaning in-place) and final rinse water. The heat of the condensate could be reused to a very large extent for the boiler feed water the heating of which then would need considerably less energy. The installation has been designed for the reuse of pure process water at a rate of 50 m³/h, allowing for a 15% reduction of total water usage. The installation is fully automatic, with on line visualization of all quality measurements and is equipped with remote control. The Belgian subsidiary formerly known as Aquavia, but acquired by VSH back in the nineties, moved its offices, workshops and warehouses to new buildings in Langerbrugge in the Gent harbour area in early V&S Hanab nv is a growing company currently employing about 400 people and with annual sales of approximately 43 million. Originally a specialist in water distribution, it started developing fully integrated water supply systems, including wastewater main sewerage, sewage systems and water Filip De Sloover, Head of Department Electromechanics treatment. Sign of the times: these last few years, the focus of V&SH has increasingly shifted to environmental solutions and rational energy use. A closer look Over the years, Visser & Smit Hanab has acquired an exceptional know how in the design, building, maintenance and - if the customer so wishes - operation of both underground and above ground piping and connections for utilities, energy, water, communications and related equipment. Its electromechanical department in particular has developed considerable expertise in the construction of pumping stations, wastewater and sludge treatment plants, in drinking water purification and swimming pool water technology. The construction of drinking water supply systems, water treatment installations and swimming pool installations remains a core business. The company assumes full responsibility for any project, wants to be a one stop shop for its customers and does deliver turnkey solutions. Recently, we have shifted our focus to complete water solutions. In our search for ways to decrease the cost of operations, we soon realized that all techniques are interrelated. Heating, electricity and water use all need to be optimized, says Filip De Sloover, Managing Director. With considerable success, Visser & Smit Hanab has developed solutions for water reuse making it for example easier to maintain swimming water at the right temperature and at less expense (swimming pools are still one of the company s most successful niches). One of our strengths is that V&SH basically is a transport company: our pipes, tubes and cable networks transport electricity, water, gas, heat, compressed air, carbon dioxide, you name it. Making 52

Energetic and environmental aspects are becoming ever more crucial and this is also true for water technology. Filip De Sloover: It would be foolish, with our expertise, not to go for the important opportunities in this area. Technologies V&SH designs, builds and maintains all projects in the following areas: - wastewater treatment and purification: of both municipal and industrial wastewater and the purification of leachate. - drinking water production: in addition to pumping stations for drinking water distribution, V&SH builds full treatment stations for drinking water treatment or purification. Several water companies are among its most dedicated customers. - sludge treatment: V&SH does not just treat wastewater, but also offers full sludge treatment services. - pumping stations: V&SH designs and builds pumping stations for both drinking water and wastewater. - underground- and above ground pipes: V&SH has all the know-how required to install all piping, in PVC, HDPE, (stainless) steel, etc. - process water: VS&H provides all necessary equipment for grey water and/or rainwater to be used as process water. - small-scale wastewater treatment plants: design and building small wastewater treatment plants, using reed bed technology, biorotors, etc 53

- swimming pool technology: V&SH has accumulated a large experience in the construction and maintenance of large public swimming pools. The company also takes care of swimming pool renovation, and can inform you about evolving regulations. - ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis: design and build - geothermic installations: design and build. Success story Visser & Smit Hanab nv got the assignment from the municipality of Poperinge (Province of West- Flanders, Belgium): the design and construction of the local swimming-pool, budgeted at 10,9 million. The management opted consciously for a design-build contract, considering that the financing and operation of a municipal swimming-pool hardly belong to the core-business of a contractor. The client, however, certainly will have taken into account the aspect of maintenance in the form of total cost of ownership over a period of 30 years, when he compared the different proposals. Visser & Smit Hanab nv was in charge of all technical aspects (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), plumbing, electricity and water treatment. This sports and recreational swimming-pool will be equipped with traditional water treatment techniques (coagulation, flocculation, multi-layer filtration, ph-correction, disinfection and oxidation, it will also have the newest, state-of-the-art techniques to save water and reduce energy consumption. Disinfection by means of salt electrolysis, reuse of rinse water for the multi-layer filters, use of rainwater, grey- water circuit, recovery of waste heat from airflows and wastewater streams, combined heat-power unit, etc all contribute to important water and energy savings. The use of rainwater and the reuse of rising water for filters warrant the reuse of 7500 m³ of drinking water. A wonderful example of sustainable water and energy use by means of activated carbon, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. Poperinge (West-Flanders, Belgium), municipal swimming-pool 54

Technologies Some of our most frequently used technologies are: ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, disinfection, sand filtration, biological oxidation, activated carbon, softening with state-of-the-art grain reactors or ion exchangers. The Industry & Services business unit also offers a wide choice of methods for the drilling of boreholes and well regeneration. Success story In early 2014, a new process water installation developed and built by De Watergroep was put into service at Vlevico (in Halle near Brussels), a meat processing plant and part of Colruyt, a Belgian retail group. The new equipment enables Vlevico to reuse some 81,000 m³ of its effluent annually. The Vlevico meat processing plant (Vlevico being an acronym for Vlees, Viande - meat in Dutch and French- Colruyt ) employs 850 people for the processing, cutting, boning and packing of beef, veal and pigmeat. Vlevico also provides the Belgian Colruyt and Okay supermarkets with prepared dishes, meat salads and deep frozen meat products. The Industry & Services business unit of De Watergroep took up the assignment in 2013 and designed and built a process water treatment installation, treating the effluent in two consecutive steps: ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. The treatment is completed with a preventive disinfection of the effluent. Final result is drinking water with a low level of minerals and ready to be reused in the production process. De Watergroep being both owner and manager of the drinking water plant warrants the quality of the treated effluent, through continuous and periodic tests in different stages of the production process. The new installation was put into service in the beginning of Frank De Poortere, manager of the Industry & Services Business Unit commented: With the new plant, Vlevico now can reuse 81,000 m³ of its treated wastewater. It saves a considerable amount of money as it need not pay for an equal volume of fresh drinking water. In the 14 years of its existence it has compiled an enviable track record with over 1000 references. Luc Vriens, CEO Waterleau A closer look Waterleau is a Total Environmental Solutions & Services Provider for both municipalities and industries with a complete portfolio of Water, Air and Waste treatment and integrated Energy Recovery applications, based on proprietary technologies. Waterleau has built more than 50 municipal Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) all over the world. In Morocco, Waterleau has built several WWTPs which are amongst the largest on the African continent. In Fès and Marrakech, the wastewater of over 1,300,000 inhabitants is treated before being discharged into the river bed. In both WWTPs, biogas is produced from sludge digestion, providing up to 50% of the plant s energy needs. In both plants, Waterleau is also responsible for the operations and maintenance for a 10 year period. In the food & beverage industry, Waterleau is a top 3 global player in anaerobic wastewater treatment: more than 500 plants recover biogas using Waterleau proprietary anaerobic wastewater technology. Waterleau counts more than 100 wastewater treatment plants in the brewery industry alone! Unique selling proposition: Our complementary range of proprietary technologies allows us to provide turn-key, integrated and sustainable solutions for municipalities and industries in the field of water, air, waste treatment and renewable energy applications 60

To provide growing cities with safe drinking water, Waterleau builds potable water plants, even in the most remote areas. In Tshikapa (Congo), Waterleau builds a state-of-the-art but operationsfriendly drinking water plant, providing safe drinking water, improving sanitary conditions and reducing waterborne diseases for more than 1.2 million people. Waterleau is also providing sustainable solutions for the increasing amounts of municipal solid waste. In China, Waterleau turns 1.5 million tons of municipal solid waste into new energy, producing 80 MWe! In Antwerp, tons of hazardous and medical waste is turned into energy. Waterleau is also a reference in the production of green energy from organic waste: in 2014, Waterleau finished the construction of the green energy plant in the Antwerp harbour enabling the production of 3MWe from the anaerobic digestion of tons of mixed organic waste. The Waterleau full scale Anaerobic Digestion R&D center is located in Ypres and is at the forefront in developing new technologies to increase biogas production yields, and nutrient recovery. The company offers similar and environmentally neutral solutions for the industry. In Jamnagar (India), Waterleau is treating the wastewater of the world s largest oil refinery. Waterleau helps municipalities and businesses going green. Waterleau s mission is to protect the four elements of nature. Today, it has a fine track record and an excellent reputation with more than 1,000 satisfied customers all over the world. Success story A key Waterleau reference in municipal wastewater treatment is the design, engineering, construction and operation by Waterleau of the Marrakech Wastewater Treatment Plant. The WTTP is conceived to treat the sewage of the city s 1,300,000 inhabitants. Apart from cleaning 130,000 m³ of wastewater per day in a series of consecutive treatment steps, the plant also produces biogas from the anaerobic digestion of the sludge, which is the by-product of the biological wastewater treatment process. The biogas is first treated using proprietary BELGAS desulphurization technology in order to prevent corrosion when used to fuel a series of cogenerator or Combined Heat and Power units, each producing heat and power. The heat is recovered for heating the sludge digesters: the sludge digestion favouring biogas production takes place at a temperature of approximately 37 C. The generated electric power from the CHP-units provides up to 50 % of the power consumption needs for the plant s operation. The aerators pumping oxygen into the biologic reactor tanks help the cleaning bacteria to eliminate the organic pollution, and are indeed large energy consumers. As power consumption is one of the key contributors to the plant s operating cost, recovering energy from sludge digestion allows keeping operating costs under control. In the Marrakech plant for instance, 1.6 MWe is recovered from the sludge digestion and biogas production. After the biological water treatment step the clean water is separated from the sludge and disposed into the Tensift river. After an additional tertiary treatment consisting of a sand filtration step and a disinfection step by UV treatment and chlorination, the treated wastewater can be reused for irrigation purposes. The Marrakech wastewater treatment plant integrates air treatment using proprietary BELAIR and WATPACK biofilter technology: unpleasant odours coming from the pre-treatment step are treated before releasing the air into the atmosphere. 61

Waterleau is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the plant for a 10 year period. The water treatment and sludge digestion process of the Marakech WWTP makes it possible to reduce the greenhouse gases with tons equivalent annualy, allowing this plant to meet the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism requirements of the Kyoto Protocol Office.
