1 LNG Shipping News A LNG JOURNAL TITLE ON LNG TANKERS 6 March 2014 New LNG shipyard building Indonesian small scale fleet Korea s Daehan Shipbuilding (DHSC) will manage construction of 10 small scale LNG carriers for Indonesian conglomerate Bimantara Group, according to shipbroker Golden Destiny. This is believed to be the first LNG tanker order for the shipyard. The 10 LNG carriers for Bimantara Group of Indonesia are for delivery in Each unit was priced at USD $50 million. Vessel construction will be a cooperation between a group of manufacturers in the Korea s Daebul Industrial Complex, led by DHSC and GHS, the broker said. DHSC has a track record primarily in bulk carrier construction. It entered into an entrustment agreement with Korean Shipyard DSME in 2011 giving DSME management of its facilites. DHSC began preparing to enter the LNG tanker shipyard business in 2012 and planned to do so by In the future it plans on expanding into other vessel segments, including container ships and conventional tankers. During the entrustment period, DSME will look after all management, production innovation, sales and marketing, and all other duties necessary to ensure the stability of DHSC s organization. Afterwards, DSME may consider acquiring DHSC. Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) had a similar arrangement at one time with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and took it over after the entrustment expired. The operator of the vessels is not yet known. Indonesia s only LNG-carrier owning operator Humpuss Intermoda Transportasi (HITS), with ownership ties to Bimantara, has four LNG ships in its fleet ranging from 10-78,000 cubic metres in capacity. Saipem building Indonesian FPU Indonesian venture Eni Muara Bakau (Eni: 55 percent, GDF Suez: 45 percent, Operator: Eni) has awarded an international joint venture an engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract for a barge-based Floating Production Unit (FPU) newbuilding in Indonesia with a total cost of $1.1 billion. The winning consortium combines a joint venture between Saipem, Indonesian Tripatra Engineers and Constructors and Japanese oil and gas engineering contractor Chiyoda, with Korean shipyard HHI. The FPU will be delivered by around January 2017 for the for the Jangkrik Complex Project operated by Eni. The Jangkrik Complex is located in Indonesia off the East Kalimantan coast. Gas production from Jangkrik and Jangkrik North East will go to domestic terminals via LNG transport, and gas pipe transport, Indonesian website Bisnis.com reported last month. This contract is in line with Saipem s strategy of targeting FLNG construction in specific geographic areas, such as Asia Pacific and Africa, where the company can leverage its unique access to fabrication yards, it said. 3 6 March 2014 LNG Unlimited NEWS 3 Jensen Maritime designs American bunker barges targeting vessels in US Gulf ports US-based Jensen Maritime, Crowley Maritime Corporation s naval architecture and marine engineering subsidiary, has been awarded a contract to design LNG bunkering barges in the US for gas distribution company LNG America. The vessels, which are expected to be delivered in late 2015, have an initial planned capacity of up to 3,000 cubic metres of LNG. Once in operation, the bunker barges will serve the dual purpose of moving the fuel from LNG America's Louisiana supply source to coastal-based storage and distribution terminals to directly refuel large ships. LNG bunkering and feedering fleet "There are currently no LNG bunkering barges in operation in American waterways and these vessels will be among the first to be developed and built, marking a significant step in LNG America's build-out of LNG bunkering infrastructure along the Gulf Coast," Jensen said. LNG America was formed in July 2013 to develop LNG distribution infrastructure that serves not only the marine market but the burgeoning use of LNG in the oil and gas, rail, mining and heavyduty trucking markets as well. Awilco LNG says state of market was one of high demand versus constrained supply Awilco LNG, the Norwegian cargo market player with five vessels, said there was continued strong LNG demand, but as seen repeatedly in 2013 actual supplies continued to be constrained. "The result was periods with increased activity when cargo was available but also periods with low shipping activity despite high demand for LNG," Awilco said. Freight income for the year was little changed and amounted to $54.7M compared with $56.6M in 2012, it added. Spot LNG charter rates for its new tri-fuel, diesel-electric vessels started the quarter at around $113,000 per day coming down to about $98,000 per day at the end of the quarter. "Operating expenses for the year were $18.5M, about the same as in 2013, reflecting increased fleet size offset by the lay-up of 'WilPower' in the second quarter of 2013," the company said. Fourth quarter Awilco reported freight income for the fourth quarter of $21.3 million versus $9.2M in the third quarter. The company's newest vessel, the "WilPride", was delivered from Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering of South Korea on November 28 and financed through a sale-leaseback charter with Teekay LNG, the Bermuda-based subsidiary of Canada's Teekay Corp. "The Angolan liquefaction plant halted production in December due to a planned overhaul and is expected to restart production soon," Awilco said in reference to the shortage of worldwide supplies. 4 4 NEWS LNG Unlimited 6 March 2014 Aker Arctic designing for ice-breaking LNG tanker surge Finnish Aker Arctic is introducing its LNG tanker engineering services as the developer behind the icebreaking LNG carrier concept for Yamal LNG, an LNG production project in the Russian Arctic that calls for 16 icebreaking ships. We have designed various LNG tanker concepts in the past, but this is the first one which is going into construction phase. We have been testing icebreaking LNG tankers for quite some time, said Arto Uuskallio, Sales and Marketing Manager at Aker Arctic. Aker Arctic began assessing different LNG tanker concepts for the partners at the pre-feed stage in Uuskallio said, We participated in the development work with Yamal LNG and CNIIMF focusing on what type vessels will be deployed, in terms of propulsion and hull specifications. Yamal LNG had a shipbuilding tender based on that work. The ship construction project at Korean Shipyard DSME will build carriers with hulls able to break ice without the requirement for icebreaker escort, with the first ship beginning ice trials in 2016, said project partner Total. Ice class vessel projects Aker Arctic has in its 45-year history designed most of the world s icebreakers, testing ice class vessel models in different conditions with a model tank, proprietary ice database, and its own ice modeling technique. In 2006 it launched its latest ice-class model testing facility in Helsinki. The Korean shipyard STX briefly acquired the design firm in in Today the Finnish company Industry Investment Inc, has a majority ownership. Minority owners include Norwegian oil and gas engineering provider Aker Solutions. The firm now has several iceclass LNG carrier hull form designs already completed and tested, using the firm s previously developed double acting vessel hull (DAT), a type of icebreaking hull. AARC s ice model basin tests models of vessels and structures for maneuverability and operationality in ice formations with ice loading. when going ahead and astern. It uses moss-type tanks and an integrated upper structure, capable of operating in open water conditions with ice loading, with a lighter operation for greater efficiency. This design offers an ice-class version of other integrated hull designs, such as MHI s Sayaendo. We have a patent on this integrated hull structure design (HIS), said Uuskallio. What we are specialized in is the structural strength on these vessels and ensuring this kind of hull shape is as efficient as possible. Recent icebreaking hull projects undertaken by the firm include a container vessel for the Russian metal mining company Norilsk Nickel, and an arctic research vessel for the China Arctic and Antarctic Administration. Standards for new operating conditions Standards applied on ice class LNG carrier designs currently depend on the owner s preference, with standards being selected from classification bodies including DNV, ABS, Bureau Veritas and the Russian Register. Uuskallio said, One standard which is typical for ice class is the strengthening requirements for the hull and the propeller machinery. It s a safety issue in that sense it determines how much steel makes up the structural elements. Classification societies have guidance on ambient temperature which affect the steel grade because in cold temps you have requirements for different types of steel, and also heating, piping and deicing. You have to also to make sure that the life-saving appliances function in various conditions. Aker Arctic works with both the owner s chosen standards and the requirement for a commercially profitable concept in the conceptual, pre-design phase. Ice conditions may impact performance, depending on how the hull is affected by different types of ice on a particular route. Aker can make ice expeditions to the places where the vessels are supposed to be operating and we measure the ice properties and various other environmental parameters. Based on those measurements and our internal database we can form our design basis for the ships, said Uuskallio. Staffing standards "You have to have your own experience. If you don't have experienced crew you have to have an ice pilot for those conditions," said Uuskallio. The United Nations' International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is currently finalizing a Polar Code on staffing and operating in ice conditions for approval in May and adoption in November. 5 6 March 2014 LNG Unlimited NEWS 5 Gasum acquires Skangass in Norway Finnish gas supplier Gasum has acquired a 51 percent majority interest Norwegian Skangass s distribution operations in Sweden and Norway from Lyse Corporation. The acquisition expands Gasum's distribution area to include Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish markets. Skangass had two bunker tankers chartered for its LNG bunkering operations. Gasum also aims to increase its LNG delivery reliability through combining Skangass s terminals and tankers with its distribution network, to supply the growing Nordic LNG market. Gasum expects new emission regulations for sulphur dioxide coming to effect in 2015 will increase LNG bunkering demand. It walso plans to meet the needs of industrial clients and future heavy duty traffic. The acquisition enables the creation of sufficient market coverage and distribution infrastructure in the Nordic countries, giving Gasum the possibility to offer a much more competitive product for end users in the maritime, industry and heavy transport sectors, said Johanna Lamminen, Gasum s excecutive vice president. The company plans to rapidly develop gas infrastructure in the Nordic countries through a strategy of combined import quantities resulting in more cost-efficient LNG sourcing at new LNG terminals. APC launches STS/bunkering couplings range with controlled closure Coupling manufacturer Alpha Process Controls International (APC), which has in the past designed couplings for onshore LNG transfer, has expanded its line of products to include large scale, offshore LNG transfer couplings. The new marine couplings range features a dampened valve closure mechanism that offers operational advantages of speed and safety over the slam-shut, flap couplings commonly used. Flap couplings may require users to reduce their flow rates due to the risk of a pressure spike in the system. APC s dampened closure mechanism helps reduce these pressure spikes and prevent damages to the APC s bolt-type couplings. The largest Russian operator, which has a fleet of 20 vessels, has taken delivery of its latest ice class gass carrier from Korean Shipyard STX. Sovcomflot held a naming ceremony for 170,200 cubic metre capacity ice class LNG carrier, Velikiy Novgorod at the shipyard in January. It been designed with an ice classification is Ice2, including anti-ice and winterization to -30 degrees, for sailing through sea ice. The vessel has a total length of 300 metres. APC says that particularly in a port environment, its quick connect feature is intended to speed connection and fill times for LNG refuelling, contributing to the safety of plant and personnel. The couplings may also be used for large scale offshore applicaions, for example, LNG emergency ship-to-ship transfer (ESTS) in a salvage operation where LNG has to be removed from a stricken LNG carrier.
