Rehabilitate 6 existing shallow wells which are currently in disrepair in order to again provide a safe, accessible, and sustainable source of potable water. 2. Provide WaSH education to improve sanitation and hygiene

Project Beneficiaries: (who will benefit from this effort and where): Project Success: (Definition and Metrics) Proposed WCF Grant Amount: Total Project Budget (including non- WCF Funds): behaviors within the community, such as Open Defecation Free areas and consistent hand washing through hygiene and sanitation training. Over 1,400 people in Wondo Genet, Ethiopia would benefit from this project. Repairing 6 wells that are sustainable for the community and provide sufficient amounts of clean water to all the projected beneficiaries. $10,800 $10,800 Scheduled Start Date: September 15th, 2016 Scheduled Completion December 15th, 2016 Date Budget Breakdown: The total requested amount is $10,800 (Item/Amount) A. The cost per well repair is $1,800 B. 6 wells at $1,800 = $10,800 Project Description: (200 words or less) Wondo Genet is located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region of Ethiopia about four hours south of Addis Ababa. This woreda has an estimated population of 155,715. A WaSH survey conducted by the district water office stated there are 60 existing wells that are not functioning and need repair to provide water to the respective communities. Additionally, to meet demand, 81 new wells need to be constructed. The district water office has no budget for maintenance and cannot provide technical support. Delay or negligence in operation and maintenance of water facilities negatively impacts the credibility of the investments made and the well being of the population. Wine To Water plans to repair 50 wells in Ethiopia in The local community is an integral part of the well repair process and a Water Use Committee is formed to receive training on well maintenance and leading WaSH education. WCF s investment will help WTW make a lasting, cost effective impact in water infrastructure for these rural, under- resourced communities. According to the 2016 World Factbook, 42.7% of the Ethiopian population lacks access to an improved drinking water source, and 72% lacks access to basic sanitation facilities.

Project Title: WCF Funded Project Summary Amazon Well Project Grant Year: 2014 Is Project Completed: YES Organization Contact Wine To Water Information: (name/phone/ ) Tina Owen: WCF Grant Amount: $3,000 Project Goals/Objectives: Project Beneficiaries: (who benefitted from this effort and where): Project Description: (200 words or less) The goals/ objectives of this project were to construct a new rainwater catchment system, as well as purchase and distribute Sawyer PointONE filters to provide clean water to nearly 360 individuals in the rural Amazon benefited from this completed project. In 2013, Wine To Water (WTW) began a partnership with Agua y Vida, a Colombian based water aid organization. Aqua y Vida s mission is to provide water access and filtration technologies for indigenous populations living along the Amazon River. Alongside Agua y Vida, Wine To Water began drilling new wells, repairing existing wells, and constructing rainwater catchment systems. Because the river is the local communities main source of water, they suffer from high levels of infectious disease, with the greatest of these being bacterial diarrhea. During the rainy reason, the river will flood, leaving many wells underwater and inaccessible. Rain catchment systems provide a reliable water source during rainy seasons. The region along the Amazon River in which WTW works is extremely remote. Because of this many of the communities we touch do not have access to knowledge and information about clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. Wine To Water is unique, in that we are one of the few organizations able to consistently reach into these rural communities and provide sustainable clean water access. Building community knowledge, ownership and partnership in long term clean water solutions is critical. Project Success: (Describe How the Project During 2014, the total of ($3,585) was utilized to construct one rainwater catchment system benefiting 120 people. There was

was Successful 200 words or less) additional funding received to round the total cost of the project to $4, The additional funds ($1,199.67) were used to purchase and distribute Sawyer PointONE filters providing clean water for an estimated 240 people. While the individual project funded by WCF successfully improved water supply for the immediate community, WTW's long- term partnership with Agua y Vida demonstrates success in our long term goal to empower local partners and communities to reach deep into their regions and build long term relationships to improve clean water access. Since 2013, Wine To Water has provided clean water to an estimated 5,494 beneficiaries in the Amazon region, with 3,028 beneficiaries reached in the year. WaSH programs moving forward will primarily be focused on well repair and well drilling in continued partnership with Agua y Vida.

Wine To Water Ethiopia Region Overview: The most populous landlocked country in the world is Ethiopia. Ethiopia is located in East Africa with a population of 99,465,819. The terrain of the country is made up of a high plateau with a central mountain range. Ethiopia s population is suffering from a lack of clean, safe water. Diarrheal disease from lack of access to clean water and sanitation is the leading cause of death in children under five. The people of Ethiopia have a right to clean water, and Wine To Water is committed to meeting the need in Ethiopia. 42.7% of the population lacks access to an improved drinking water source 72% of the population lacks access to basic sanitation facilities 73,341 children under five die every year The implementation of WaSH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) programs in Ethiopia would save an estimated 64,540 children a year Program Overview: Programs in Ethiopia are focused on providing access to water. This can be done by rehabilitating wells because they are damaged or contaminated or by drilling new wells in the communities that have to walk far distances for their water. In , WTW plans to rehabilitate 50 wells and drill 10 new wells in areas suffering from severe drought. Impact and Outcomes: Wine To Water has a long lasting presence in Ethiopia. Since 2007, we have provided 28,157 beneficiaries with access to clean water. This year, WTW plans to reach an additional 10,560 people with clean water through well rehab and well drilling. The future impacts and outcomes will only increase as Wine To Water continues providing sustainable solutions to relieve the burden from lack of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Timeline: Well rehab is expected to take place between mid- July and the end of August. Well drilling implementation will be weather dependant, due to access problems during the rainy season. Drilling typically cannot be conducted until after the rainy season, which is anticipated in September. However, earlier work is possible if there is a dry spell. We are currently working with WTW teams to assess the ongoing timeline and will have updates and soon as possible. Financial Need and Budget: Wine To Water is making deep investments in each of our international WaSH programs. Furthermore, the following budget breakdown reflects our commitment to working in community to provide clean water to those in need around the world. Ethiopia Overall Budget Item WaSH Programs Total Unit Unit Cost No of Units Amount Well Rehab Per Piece $1, $90, Well Drilling Per Piece $4, $48, WaSH Education Per Piece Included in above 60 n/a $138,000.00
