RENEWABLE ENERGY SECTOR IN INDIA P.C.Pant Ministry of New and Renewable Energy 3/9/2012 1
Relevance of Renewable Energy Energy Resources availability Increasing world population and increased expectations for better lifestyle Economic growth and energy requirement for anticipated growth Climate Change 3/9/2012 2
Planning Option Emphasis on Energy Efficiency Find New Sources: Finite : by exploring untapped reserves Renewable: by developing suitable harnessing methods/devices (Tapping the Renewable energy) 3/9/2012 3
Strength and Limitation of RE Low Intensity but uniformly distributed Fuel supply free but capital cost high Fluctuating; best controlled by change of load using feed forward control Cyclic: Storage needed for using in 24 hrs profile Interdisciplinary and varied skill needed Small scale economic, large scale may present difficulty 3/9/2012 4
Present Status ResourceAssessmentforallRESourcesdone About 20% identified potential achieved in WE, in SHP and Biomass based Power Generation it is not significant Though lots of decentralized systems installed for solar energy utilization for various applications, tapping its its power generation potential has just begun National Solar Mission being implemented as part of NAPCC to accelerate tapping the huge solar energy potential for power generation 3/9/2012 5
NEW & RENEWABLE ENERGY Cumulative achievements as on No. Sources / Systems Potential MW Achievements during Cumulative Achievements I. Power From Renewables 1. Biomass Power (Agro residues) MW MW 2. Wind Power MW MW 3. Small Hydro Power (up to 25 MW) MW MW 4. Cogeneration-bagasse MW MW 5. Waste to Energy MW MW 6. Solar Power 20MW/sqkm MW MW Sub Total (in MW) (A) MW MW 3/9/2012 6
B. Off-Grid/Distributed Renewable Power (including Captive/CHP Plants) 7 Biomass Power / 51.89M W MW Cogen.(non-bagasse) 8. Biomass Gasifier MWeq MWeq 9. Waste-to- Energy MW MWeq 10. Solar PV Power Plants 11 MWp MWp 11. Aero-Generators/Hybrid 0.33MW 1.45 MW Systems Sub Total (B) MWeq MWeq II. Remote Village Electrification 905 Villages & Hamlets 9009 villages 3/9/2012 7
III. Decentralized Energy Systems 1Family Type Biogas Plants 0.70 lakh lakh 2. 1Solar Water Heating Mln. sq.m Mln. sq.m. 7Collector Area. 3/9/2012 8
Key features of Solar Mission Specific goals for increasing use of solar thermal technologies in urban areas, industry, and commercial establishments; A goal of increasing production of photovoltaics to 1000 MW/year; and A goal of deploying at least 1000 MW of solar thermal power generation. UpgradationofExistingSolarEnergyCentretoaCentreof International Excellence Increased international collaboration on technology development, Strengtheningofdomesticmanufacturingcapacity, Increasedgovernmentfundingandinternationalsupport. 3/9/2012 9
Other features related to RE in NAPCC up-scaling biomass combustion and gasification based power generation further R&D to enable pilot and commercial scale demonstration of lab scale technologies Design of pico turbines (< 500W range) to enable very small scale generation based on local hydro resources Electronic Load Controller for micro hydro to enable supply of power from micro-hydel sources to village level grids Standardizing the modules and optimizing the usage of materials for reducing equipment, and hence generation, costs Support to commercial demonstration by entrepreneurs of small/micro-hydel based distributed gen-eration systems, in particular in remote locations, and using these as training facilities for local entre-preneurs and O&M personnel to help develop this sector. 3/9/
Initiatives of Government Preferential Tariff Announced by various SECRCs CERC has announced guidelines for determining tariff for RE technology specific power generation Generation based incentive scheme Renewable Energy Certification mechanism Fiscal incentives such as depreciation, tax holidays continue 3/9/
