3 R E V E R S E O S M O S I S PRINCIPLE OF REVERSE OSMOSIS Due to the globally nowadays increase of impure water, the faster and wider spreading method of modern water treatment industry is the REVERSE OSMOSIS. But what is Reverse Osmosis? REVERSE OSMOSIS OSMOSIS LOW CONCENTRATION SOLUTION HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLUTION When two solutions of different concentration are separated with a semi-permeable membrane, then pure water passes through the membrane from the lower to the higher concentration solution (osmotic flow). SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE LOW CONCENTRATION SOLUTION HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLUTION The osmotic flow continues until an equilibrium is settled, where the level of the higher concentration solution settles at a higher than the initial level. The difference between the levels of the two solutions causes the so-called osmotic pressure. SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE REVERSE OSMOSIS LOW CONCENTRATION SOLUTION SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE OSMOTIC PRESSURE HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLUTION Reversing the process, if an external pressure greater than the osmotic one is applied on the higher concentration solution, pure water is transferred through the membrane towards the lower concentration solution. Post-treatment may comprise of: Remineralization filters in order to enrich the product water with calcium and alkalinity. ph adjustment using acid or/and alkaline dosing systems.
