Renewables, Smart Grids New perspective on system integration enabling CO2 reduction and efficient energy usage Segment Leader GE P&C 1

Introduction UN Climate Change Conference Dec 09 Copenhagen general recognition temp rise <2ºC EU set targets 1990vs2020 on ETS 20% of total energy generation from renewables 20% below of GHG 20% cut in energy consumption due to energy efficiency EU set targets 2005vs2020 on nonets 10% emissions are to be cut 2

Analysis and Obj of the study 1. Analyzing scenarios to reach the EU 2020 targets, i. e. IEA scenario Outlining potential challenges resulting from a higher portion of renewables in energy generation 3. Demonstrating the possibilities of the Smart Grid as an enabler for energy efficiency 4. Giving a review on how climate change has been addressed by the transportation industry (no ETS) 5. Analyzing the opportunities of electric-vehicles 6. Proposing a holistic approach to tackling energy challenges by complete system integration 7. Real example of a SG Bela Cola prj with energy storage 3

Scenarios IEA >5ºC Energy Demand 09vs % (+53% coal) <2ºC 93% in No OECD BRIC and UAE drivers Comparison of global CO2 emissions Reference Scenario vs. 450 Scenario (Gt CO2) 4

Challenges Substantial diesel consumption Costly fuel transportation Waste of hydro power due to unavailability of storage Inefficient utilization of hydro units due to operational constraints Inefficient system control and monitoring Greenhouse gas emissions 17

Solution Description Proposed and Implemented Solution: Hydrogen Assisted Renewable Power (HARP) A well-established and commercially available technology How it works: Off-peak electricity from the hydro units is converted to hydrogen by an electrolyzer. Hydrogen is stored in high-pressure tube trailers. The stored hydrogen is converted back to electricity by a fuel cell during times of peak demand. 18

Benefits & Requirements Benefits: Hydro power is efficiently stored, and optimally utilized. Reduction of diesel units operation Powering the remote community of Bella Coola with less environmental footprint Requirements: An efficient system to optimally control the operation of HARP system and its interaction with other generation units (hydro & diesel) An efficient HMI to configure the system, interact with operator, and efficiently monitor the status of each device and energy and power flow in the system 19

New Control System 20

Results Conventional Operation in a Typical Summer Day Total Cost = $803 22

Results New Operation in a Typical Summer Day Total Cost = $293 (63.5% reduction) Reduced operation of diesel units, and efficient utilization of storage Charging the storage when surplus hydro is available
