2 Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Why does Birmingham need Zero Heroes? Birmingham City Council has launched the Zero Hero campaign to encourage everyone who lives or works in the city to reduce, reuse and recycle more in their everyday lives. Birmingham is aiming to be a zero waste to landfill city by 2035, and yet businesses in Birmingham waste tens of thousands of pounds every year by not operating efficiently. Keeping our city super If business waste is not properly dealt with, it could end up being both costly and in violation of legislation on waste handling. Businesses have a duty of care to ensure that waste is handled by a licensed waste carrier, which means integrating reduce, reuse and recycle principles into your waste management processes can keep you legislation compliant, save money and improve your business profile within the community. The Zero Hero campaign exists to provide businesses with all the information they need through the free downloadable Resource Efficiency Toolkit, e-shots, and a helpful step-by-step video guide on how to implement your plan. Make your pledge now Businesses can now make their pledge at All participating businesses will feature on the Zero Hero website and social media channels for free, promoting your involvement with the campaign which will boost your profile.

4 Be super smart at managing your commercial waste There is various legislation around the disposal of commercial waste, and all businesses must have a commercial waste contract that guarantees all waste is handled by a licensed waste carrier. Depending on which supplier you use, you could improve your Zero Hero credentials simply by increasing the recycling percentage of your ordinary waste. Many common office items can be easily recycled: printer paper, inkjet and laser printer cartridges, food and drink packaging waste from the office kitchen, or even old computers and phones. So, when choosing a new supplier for your commercial waste contract, why not ask about their green credentials, for example: How do you separate waste at your facilities? What percentage of all waste handled is recycled? Does non-recyclable waste go through an energy recovery scheme? Do you have any developments in the pipeline that would allow us to recycle even more in the future? By choosing a supplier that tries to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible, you can stay compliant with legislation and reduce the percentage of your business waste that goes to landfill. WASTE PAPER RECYCLING Not sure which legislation applies to you? Commercial waste is governed by a wide range of legislation, which may include Environment Protection Act 1990, the Packaging and Waste Regulation 1997, the Animal By-Products Regulations 2005, Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 and Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment If you re unsure which legislation applies to your business, ask your commercial waste provider for an audit of your waste streams.
5 Zero Hero resources available to help your business The Zero Hero digital library offers advice on how to reduce, reuse and recycle to maximum effect, no matter how big or small your business is. Every year we use 4 billion plastic cups in the UK mostly used once and thrown away.
