1 E3120 Microbiology The course consists of: 1)Lectures Tuesday Lecture Room KE 5 Thursday Lecture Room KE 5 2) Electronic assigments 3) Exam Learning outcomes After completing the course the student can: present the structure and physiology of pro- and eukaryotic micro-organisms with specific focus on applications list the principles of cell growth and underlying intrinsic and extrinsic factors which influence microbial growth including adaptation and sensing describe mechanisms of microbial spoilage, formation and relevance of biofilms and pathogenicity and the antimicrobials used in control present the application of micro-organisms in industry and related commercial issues Core content The interactions of micro-organisms with the environment, the built environment and with the human body classification and applications of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms microbial growth and intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing growth at the single cell and the population level. Quorum sensing, biofilms, adaptation and interaction with organic and inorganic materials. The course deepens the students' previous knowledge and skills in microbiology by providing a more detailed view into applied microbiology. The course aims at illustrating the interactions between the microbe, the growth environment and parameters influencing growth, in view of understanding microbial physiology and interactions. 1
2 Teachers Katrina Nordström, professor (microbiology Office (CHEM) C304b (2nd office after lecture room KE 4 on the left) katrina.nordstrom@aalto.fi M.Sc. (Eng) Olli Natri will lecture and olli.natri@aalto.fi Course materials 1. Pearson Mastering Microbiology (MMB), electronic learning environment will be used 2. Students get access to the electronic version of the course textbook: Madigan et al. Brock, Biology of Microorganisms, global ed, 14 ed. 3. Course power points (as pdf) can be accessed via Manage Documents in MMB print these for yourself and make notes 4. Electonic assigments can be found as assigments and the are three deadlines for the completion of the assigments: (part I), (part II) and (part III). After the deadline, you can not complete these anymore. The assigments will take 1-1 ½ hours / per week. Students complete these individually- Mastering Microbiology Course: E3120 Microbiology (MMBE3120) The teacher (Nordström) will send and to all students during 8.9. with the course ID and code, so that you can access the Pearson electronic and log into the course which is: E3120 Microbiology (MMBE3120) Textbook (electronic) Madigan et al.,brock, Biology of Microorganisms, 14th global ed. If you have problems logging in, or need help with the system, we can go through this during the lecture. 2
