Integrated River Engineering Project Danube East of Vienna
Integrated River Engineering Project on the Danube East of Vienna is a project of via donau, realized ed on behalf of the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology. is a priority project of the European Commission (Trans-European Transport Network, PP18). With this project via donau is fulfilling the statutory mandate to provide for better environmental and navigational conditions. Project area: river-km 1.921, ,7 from the Freudenau Power Plant to the Austrian-Slowak border via donau I 2
Deficits in the project area Riverbed Heavily regulated river Inadequate degradation in National Park area fairway depths decoupling of river habitats of typical limited competitiveness and floodplains, falling local flora and fauna of inland water- groundwater levels are at risk way transport via donau I 3
Granulometric River Bed Improvement River Bank Restoration V b d H d P River bed stability Verbund Hydro Power AIMS Improvement ecological l conditions Hinterrinner / Creating Islands Optimisation Low Water Regulation Improvement nautical conditions River Bed Adjustments (dredging & dumping) Kovacs Side Arm Reconnection via donau I 4
Granulometric River Bed Improvement Reduce river bed erosion by adding larger gravel sizes (approx mm) within the natural grain size spectrum. Reducing bed load transport capacity from to m 3 /a to to m 3 /a ~25 cm Foto: Verbund Hydro Power before after final via donau I 5

Integrated River Engineering Project & Joint Statement The measures east of Vienna Are the result of an integrative planning approach (official starting point: installation of an interdisciplinary steering committee by the bmvit in 2002) therefore comply with the objective of the Joint Statement t t present a living and successful example for integrative planning for combining the needs of navigation and ecology Are honoured as best practice for integrated planning approaches in the Joint Statement The process for achieving the Joint Statement was supported by the bmvit, via donau and the Danube Floodplain Nationalpark by sending experts hosting the first workshop in April 2007 via donau I 16
Integrative Planning Joint Statement on Guiding Principles for the Development of Inland Navigation and Environmental Protection in the Danube River Basin (2007) initiative by the ICPDR, cooperation with Danube Navigation Commission and International Sava Commission the integrated planning approach was honored as best practice within the joint statement Manual on Good Practices in Sustainable Waterway Planning (2010) initiative by the EU PLATINA Project the integrative planning approach served as a showcase for the planning philosophyp measures are described as good practices for ecologically orientated river engineering via donau I 17
Stakeholder Forum The Stakeholder Forum ( Akteursforum ) allows the structured integration of stakeholders in the project. The forum will accompany the realization of the Pilot Project Bad Deutsch-Altenburg discuss the outcome and the consequences for future projects, especially the consequences for the Integrated River Engineering Project Ten stakeholders with voting power: 4 stakeholders from economy / navigation sector 4 stakeholders from environmental NGOs 1 representative of National Park 1 representative of ICPDR Observers are welcome to the meetings The stakeholders are supported by an independent Scientific Board. It is made of 5 experts for the fields of navigation, ecological river engineering, hydrology and ground water, biodiversity, hydrobiology and fish ecology via donau I 18
